    @TacoTacoTacoTaco It would be interesting to see how mr.Williams orchestrates this kind of scenes if I consider only this score. But if you see those made by him, it's the same result so I think the orchestration is cowritten with him.

    I wrote that comment to you by mistake because I don't know this guy and I thought he was the composer who made the orchestration but it's not of course. It's not the end of the world man!

    I think that they made the right decision in the original film to theme this the way they did. This theme is kind of whimsical, which is great when you get into the shops in Diagon Alley and when you see all the little bits and pieces that make it feel magical, but when Harry first walks into Diagon Alley it's the first exposure he's had to the Wizarding World as a magical place. The Leaky Cauldron is basically just a pub, but this place, this is magical. So the really grand entrance music makes sense, it's the big climatic part of the opening of the film I think.

    This original Diagon Alley theme is cute, but I actually think they made the right decision in using the 'Great Hall' theme in this scene instead. Visually, Diagon Alley is more reminiscent of the Victorian era, so I think the Romantic, stately grandeur works better than the Baroque recorders. Thanks as always for the very informative presentation!

    Totally agree, the original score just doesn't feel right. Maybe it's because I've seen the movie too many times.

    I also *love* the crash cymbal segue they used at the beginning of the scene, which I was sorely disappointed to see they omitted from the LLL expanded album.

    I can't think of a more appropriate term for the tritone than "imp." The thing is, I love using it if given the opportunity when I write music, so I can't divorce myself from John Williams' more mischievous musical tenancies...also I forgot how fast the film version of _Diagon Alley_ was! In all seriousness, I love how John Williams' deep intellectual roots when it comes to his knowledge of music come into play in these contemporary film works. Not only does it show that he knows how to get creative with ideas based on old material, but it most importantly shows how he's in complete control of his craft. You need a near-perfect composer to be able to pull off this kind of transition, and thankfully John Williams is able to do this flawlessly (especially, if you ask me, in _Aunt Marge's Waltz_ - seriously, as a classically-trained musician and composer, the Rossini-inspired writing is magically satisfying to hear and see {in the score, if you have it}).

    Wow there's always tons of things to notice in John Williams' music but here, fantastic job ! I've always wondered, like you did apparently, why the Stone's theme was used when showing Harry's gold, that's one of the few mysteries I couldn't resolve yet ...

  • @henrique88t

    @henrique88t

    Yeah, I'm puzzled by that too. I think maybe it's trying a red herring and trying to connect the theme to treasures, but in a misleading way.

    I've made this point under basically all your videos, but this is a great example for why the "Sorcerer's Stone motif" isn't about the Sorcerer's Stone (or Voldemort). It's just a general surprised/confused tension builder line.

    Regarding Gringotts I am dumbfounded as to how to *think* about the harmonic style here, mainly chromatic. I try and try to mix enharmonic chords with borrowed from lydian, minor, etc. But that line between the chromatic element feeling out of place in mostly stable harmony and not having a feeling of home at all and just feeling totally atonal... How do I find that line...
