Very cool! I found this video a bit too late. I bought a 1960 Chevy Biscayne and my car started choking and bucking when I was leaving work. It happened right after I got a new tank of gas (car also sat for 20 years from the guy I bought it from, thought corrosion could have clogged the pickup tube.) Changed 60+ year old sending unit, pump, and plugs, still no run. I saw the connector had fallen off of my ballast resistor, so when I went to reconnect it I saw the rod inside had snapped completely in half. Everything that your car is doing is exactly what mine did, short of it able to stay running (albeit horribly) if I gave it a lot of gas.

Honestly a load of my friends swear they carry about 6 to meets because they go bad so often haha maybe it’s our great British weather 😂😂

Great video thanks what happens if they are installed backwards the one i have is the identical to the one you replaced the one i have gets very hot to the touch only min.after running is that normal it would burn you if you held it thanks

Resistance is futile. My Jeep's fuel pump has a very similar ceramic-cased ballast resistor, roughly 1.4 ohms or thereabouts.

I think you just answered my problem. I took off the HEI Distributor because it sucked . I put my old dis. back on with my Ballast Resistors W/ the 12V hot wire on the coil forgetting it did not need it like the HEI. Now I think that no why it would no start ?

Yesss, I believe a HEI Diss uses 12V which is why you bypassed it, but I think if the stock runs on the bypass for too long it can fry the coil. so if you did not catch it in time you may now need a new stock replacement coil? Hope this helps! Sub to the channel for more Plymouth content!

i have hyundai azera 2009 & i found a resistor for my ignetion coils in the parts catalog. if it's became faulty what are symptoms? because the engine have random stuttering even i can hear the statics in the speakers because of it! by the way the spark plugs, coils, battery, alternator are new & the diagnostic tool don't show misfire

That is most definitely a head scratcher! I am no mechanic but if you have replaced all the above mentioned parts it can't hurt to also change the resistor. As you can see for my car it means that the car will start up and run but the second I turn the key from start to run position it cuts off that's where the ignition system circuit is trying to run through the bad resistor and therefore the circuit is being broken. If your car is running and driving I do not believe it should be the case but for a relatively cheap part it might be worth replacing just for piece of mind Let me know how you get on!

Yeah baby. It's a dodge so you have to ump that pedal on first cold start 10-20 times to prime the carburetor. After that it'll start easy all day long.

Yeahhh mine does love getting my leg working for first start up haha

I have a 1973 Jaguar xj6. I have a ballast ignition system on it. The ballast resistor starts to smoke and get very hot when I turn the switch on. What's causing that???

That sounds like its short circuiting on something maybe the internal resistor is grounding on something? definitely should not be smoking.

Snap lock battery terminal, them are pretty nifty

Points in my distributor were burned. Could running coil without ballast resistor have caused the points to burn?

hie dont know if you have found an answer in line with that but if it helps in any way i do believe it also quickly burns them out will give you a link to a video which also supports that though i have experienced it first hand and i also believe it affects the condenser as well Because today i just had the same issue and changed the condesner and soon after quick start and idle but sad par, two days back we had chamged the condenser because we were overrevving doing wheeelies lol . so i am hoping to replace it tomorrow the resisitor.

Yes I think so! It can really bugger up your entire ignition system so points and leads included in that!

Blame your condenser- I had a paddock basher datsun 1600 i slapped together from stray parts. There was no ballast resistor so I ran it without one, car lasted most of a year of racing on the claypan before the gearbox blew. No problems at all from the ignition system without a ballast resistor. Some coils may die from this, but mine didn't and it was an old, dirty standard one from the parts pile.

Replaced it. Still same problem😤

Yeah I bet you was! Have you got to the bottom of what the issue was?

A 72 should have a 4 post resistor. It should also have electronic ignition. 72 was the first year of it.

Makes sense, 73 was the first year Aussie Chryslers got electronic ignition- in the VJ model Valiants.

74 was the first year. For 4 post, and electronic ignition.
