nice video.. and great troubleshooting. i got the same A4 and love the car, but hate the size of the engine bay. there is so little room behind the radiator. thanks for pointing out the components from below. my underside is as rusted as yours from a few upstate NY winters.

Nice, all though for the experienced tech if you turn the key and hear the starter click that tells you all you need to know. Multiple clicks usually means battery doesn't have enough juice. Again this is a great demonstration of the correct procedure though to identify.

I'm an experienced tech and I disagree with you. Clicking noise doesn't tell you everything. You know you have power to the starter but might have high resistance in the wiring/connections. I've cleaned green connections and had the engine start after or can have a bad wire from solenoid to starter. I guess you could just change the starter every time it clicks and as long as you clean the connections should work everytime.

Ashley Enns I have a ‘01 2.8q automatic with just under 160k miles... it has started too act up: when I turn the key nothing happens (the starter doesn’t seem too get any juice at all) no clicks.... what I have been doing it using my left hand to turn the key (left side drive car) and with my right hand wiggling around the gear selector,,, it usually started too crank after 3-7 turns of the key,,,, I don’t know if that is just random or of my wiggling song the heart selector is making a difference.. I don’t know is the sensor telling the computer that the transmission isn’t in park so don’t spin the starter or if it is the starter itself...... it has been acting up like this for a couple weeks now and is pretty frustrating...I am hoping I don’t have too take apart my interior to get at a switch/sensor???? Any help with this would be awesome!!!!

Great video! May i ask, what is the probability that the solenoid/starter breaks at the same time the ignition switch breaks? I have tested for 11.75v at Terminal 50 when turning over after replacing the switch, and it still will not turn over...

Great information, thank you! I have a 1994 Audi 100CS Quatro. From where you are at with the AC lowered, can you then also remove the starter or is there more that has to be done in order be able to remove it for replacement? I saw someone else access the starter by removing the front tire, rotor, under fender inner cover, and then the lower motor mount/cross member to access it that way. Trying to find the easiest way to get to the starter to replace it. Thanks again for the excellent information!

+Randy Settergren Yes you need to remove the right front tire so that you can get to the starter bolts, but I don't remember needing to undo anything else. One tip, Disconnect the ground cable to your battery!!

If my car won't start, but the started seems like it's trying, could it still be the starter? It won't turn over! I assume it's not the battery since I was able to try for a minute or so.

VTSPQR hey, thank you for the video!.. not nearly enough easy/mid Audi content on here.. I have a 2001 A4 2.8q auto and have resently got the dreaded single click from the starter when I turn the key to the start position. I thought it was the ignition switch so I just changed it yesterday but it didn’t fix the single click (it doors start/turn over but usually takes 3,5 up to 10 turns to get it to start),,, so obviously it wasn’t a bad ignition switch,, so I’m guessing that it is the starter... but since I crushed the ignition switch now the abs&traction control lights come on (in my first test drive after the change it felt kick the brakes especially the front passenger side brake was rubbing/felt like the abs was glitching) do you have any advice for me? I love my last of the b5’s it is in such good shape; mint interior about 170k and was serviced at the Audi dealer for the first 125k+ of its life. Any info would be really helpful! Thanks

I have a 1998 Audi A6 Quattro 2.8 and I am having this exact problem about my car not wanting to start up! But this coming up Monday I am putting it in the Auto shop and I hope that it is my freaking starter that went bad! Because I have been stuck in Oklahoma since June the 5th when my Audi just stop cranking and didn't want to turn over! But this video just gave me hope that it maybe my starter and nothing and else serious! To where I have to take it to the Audi dealership because I would be for damn before I do that! I love my Audi but I will get rid of it before I come up outta my pockets with big bucks! Lol

I replace more ignition switches, than starters on those cars. If it is the switch, it's a lot less expensive. Best of luck to you...=)

I replaced my engine wiring harness and after the install my car won't start, won't turn over at all. It has a brand new battery in it. I don't think the starter would suddenly stop working being that it was working find before. Could you give me advise please.

What year is this Audi A4? My car has the same problem. If I get lucky, I can push start it as long as it has a little bit of battery power. I tried jumping, my battery and it still wouldn't start. I'm thinking it may be my starter on my 96 AUDI A4.

Will a conductivity meter do the same job. Put the ignition on and touch the terminal 50 with the positive to see if there's a current flowing right to the terminal. When I turned the ignition in my car, the car was dead, then it started, few days later, dead, then it ran pretty ok for a year, now it's dead. So I have to confirm if it is the starter motor or somehitng else. Cheers.

I have replaced my turbo recently so i disconnected the battery for a few days. after reinstall of turbo my vehicle will not start,no click, battery 12v charged,no dimmed lights, fuel pump engages, just not click or turn over.I was told that it could be an alarm feature not sending signal to the starter.I find it odd that my starter would go bad all of a sudden...Please give your input.

@TenPeaceShow Actually, I said at the beginning of the video, that I all ready had checked the ground cable, and it was fine!! There was power at terminal 30 at the starter. What this video was about, was determining if the ignition switch was bad, or the starter motor itself. Due to the fact that there was power to terminal 50 means the starter motor or the solenoid had failed. I was not showing how to diagnose a bad ground, but if I was, that could also be done with a test light.
