Even splurging $20-30 (or whatever the cost of an average mobile game from a big company is nowadays ) in In App Purchases isn't enough to get even a fraction of the "full experience".

What's so crazy about this is that raid shadow lands (I know) has different "chests" but even the 2nd lowest "chest" makes it so nothing lower than a 3* can drop, you can't even get a 1* or 2* in the ptw options. Which means blizzard is somehow greeedier than raid shadow legends

When I worked at Blizzard EU before the decimation of 2018, I remember a mantra being spread from J. Allan Brack in the various company wide communications that "Blizzard was to become the Blizzard of mobile gaming!" and it sounded like this was to become the new main priority of the company at the time. Back then we thought it meant to bring some balance to mobile gaming with some good games in the sea of gacha games, but it seems now they meant doubling down on the industry practices of predatory monitization in mobile gaming.

The problem is that mobile gaming is unimaginable larger than any other gaming medium. For every commenter here there are a thousand people not giving a single fuck or simply not even conceptualizing what pay to win is in any form. They just have a phone that has a game where you can spend 10$ dollars on whatever. This is why "respectable" developers simply don't care about your opinion. You don't matter since the average asian mobileman will outpay you.

Google and Apple can infact double down on these guys, like they literally have to say "When you publish your app on our store, you cannot bring in gambling mechanics" or something like that, but since they tax all purchases, they would never do that. The Epic vs Google and Apple case now wants them to allow sideloading/external purchases which would lower Gapple's income and present even greater opportunities for these gachas, worse yet, gapple may become more resilient from ever removing gambling. I support Epic's take on this but we need gov.s to step in this mess before it becomes the norm and there are more approvers to these predatory acts than opposers.

Man Blizzard spent 10x more time working on their P2W system than they did working on the game. Like, imagine how fun this game perhaps could be if these things were reachable by normal players through normal gameplay. What a joke.

@@TheDogmam12 that's the thing. There will be literally thousands of player that will spent thousands of $ for this game, and there will be a few hundred that spent tens of thousands $ and a few tens that spent $$$$. And the worst part is, those people are proud to do that.....

I miss the old days of just paying 15$ a month for a subscription to a Blizzard Game or just paying once for buying the game and that meant all the content was available to you. The "free games" almost always end up being a money pit.

I share your sentiment, I to miss it to. Also it was a healthier environment to make games, setting a burn rate and start work, release, get paid, repeat. Now you have so many games developers going for that steady stream of income to found other projects, but the other projects just becomes just as uninspired. My best guess is, that it's hard for a developer company to switch between making a good game and thinking about optimal ways to abuse players outside the game. To me it's watching creativity getting strangled at 300/300mbs, with single minded gratification getting crueler and crueler...

Games like this really sell the value of services like Apple Arcade, Gamepass, and Google Play Pass. A pittance every month; hundreds of complete, high quality games.

I grew up playing WarCraft 2: Tides of Darkness and the first Diablo, StarCraft, WoW, and it really is a genuine disappointment that a developer like that has become another cash-cow. I remember reading through the manuals just to absorb Chris Metzen's art and the storylines... I don't know, it just sucks that this is a Blizzard product.

I'm in a similar boat, and hey, they DID remaster Diablo 2 and StarCraft Brood War. Sounds like small side projects, but they really weren't. It's like Blizzard has one faction genuinely devoted to good games and keeping good games alive, and another just about the profit potential.

Alright, It took making my favorite franchise ever a p2w gacha to finally make me say with confidence: We need laws and regulations for casino monetization in gaming, period. Everywhere. Not just in Belgium and the Netherlands, but worldwide. Every government should form a "ministry of p2w" and make this manipulative, predatory dogshit so unprofitable for companies that they stop doing it. Let's go back to selling cosmetics and vanity items, and stop this plague that makes all games worse by default and traps people into burning their money for absolutely nothing in return. "Just don't spend any money if you don't want to" doesn't fly for me at this point, because games do not cater to that mindset anymore.

Blizzard is done with making good games. Same as most other companies. Consumers love this PayToWin stuff. If they didn't, they wouldn't play these games, but they throwing their money at companies. Why would Blizzard care if they can make more money out of mobile game in one year than compared to WoW they worked for a decade. Minimum effort, maximum profit. Money talks. The game was basically fully ''asian style'' except the diablo asthetic ever since the beginning leaks weeks after it was announced. There is almost no phone game that isn't insanely pay 2 win. It was gonna be worse if the leaks from years ago were true. It was literally outsourced to an asian company that mass produces Gacha ARPG games via copy pasting models.

The best way to actually "vote with your wallet" is to help family and friends who do have gambling addictions and who are whaling games to stop. Those people's "wallets" are worth a hundred times more than your average player's wallets as far as Blizzard is considered. Help them to find other hobbies, get therapy for any mental distress they may be in, and hopefully eventually, get them to a point where they can delete the game. Sunk cost fallacy is real, so that last step is not likely to be feasible for most whales. However, one can at least disrupt an actual relevant portion of these p2w game's revenue streams while helping people who genuinely need help.

I may be wrong, but I always thought "getting your foot in the door" originally referred to the salesman literally putting his foot in the crack of the door so it couldn't be immediately slammed on him, allowing him to pitch the sale.

The fact that Mike Ybarra was defending this game all the time on twitter, saying its not P2W at all, really just shows how gone the company is, even with a leader that everyone respected. Yes its a mobile game, but there is plenty of other ways to monetize it that doesnt affect actual gameplay, like cosmetics. Gating players with massive pay walls is just pure shamelessness, because you literally wont be able to compete in this game without spending thousands of dollars. At least most mobile games allow to play their games F2P for the most part, but that wont be a thing in this game.

How shall we win the audience back? A heartfelt single player game? Something that pushes the concepts of ARGPs or RTSs? No! I know. How about a shitty mobile game, with P2W, and gacha loot boxes. BRILLIANT!!!

The only acceptable design for gacha game is PvE based only, and all contents can be cleared with lowest rarity units. Yes Im talking bout Arknights... and I am also eyeing on the new game by same dev, Arknights: Endfield... there's very few games in gacha space that actually design a game with paying as form of optional/donation system...

I can't stop laughing at Asmo's facial expression when he hears about these predatory P2W mechanics and his brain is still processing it ( how the fuck is that even possible to be this blatant ? ).

I had the third best echoing fury ever, and my account was hacked 20 times in month after i got it and wanted to sell it. Then a bajillion copies ended up being out there and being traded that Blizzard couldn't handle, and then they decided to account lock me, so my account couldn't use auction house anymore. An also made every item i had account bound

I really hope the backlash for blizzard will be so hard, that they’ll pull it off of the appstores and basically delay it again. It’s insane to see such malicious attempts to throw that at players and call it a game.

I like Zack, I think his takes are very intelligent and on point. I hate that he is going to play this, and take with him a majority of his audience. Zack literally does not care about money. He will play it, he will pay alot of money and he will definetly hate on the cashshop in videos. The main market for games like this is Asia, especially China. If Zack decides to not play it cause its p2w, it does not impact Blizzards revenue at all.

I'm surprised anyone is covering the game at all, it's kind of sad in my opinion, best way to stifle a crap cash grab like this is to give it no coverage and complete radio silence.

@@Zamki13 Yes it does. How much is a matter of debate, but if he spends even a dollar it affects their revenue. He'll spend a few thousand, his audience together will spend probably a few hundred times that. Drop of water in the ocean perhaps, but it also feeds engagement and players in the western world. If China wants this type of game, fine, but if we could make it bad enough that they don't bother even releasing games like this in the western world we'd be better off.

p2w and lootboxes are two different things. I agree with legislation against lootboxes, or at least classify it as gambling, which it is. p2w is just bad game design.

Plenty of countries where university is free and there's no college tuition and healthcare is free and taxes are relatively high and people pay their fair share and people help each other. Greed isn't an evolved trait, it's a learned trait. If anything ancient humans were more communal and sharing than we are. There's fossils of ancient humans who lived relatively long lives with major disabilities that would have made them unable to care for themselves. They lived so long because others took care of them. There's a find of a 20 year old girl, who had severely atrophied bones likely due to an illness in her childhood. She lived to 20 and one of the other things they noticed was that her teeth had several cavities, likely from eating too many sweets. Because she was cared for and her family were trying to cheer her up with sweets. She wasn't abandoned to the wolves. The individualistic me before everyone else attitude is very much a cultural thing that has run rampant in the US, but that's not the case everywhere.

just don't spend money.. it's a free game until YOU decide to spend money, no one is forcing you. people get jealous of others for gearing faster and that's all it is. don't be jealous and you won't spend money.

No wonder the game took forever to develop. They spent 90% of it working on the damn p2w system.

Main difference between them, is that PoE has *skins* for sale. There's nothing about them that affects the game.

The problem is that they give 'Unlimited' purchase warranty for the crystals and for people who F2P earn none through standard play. There's no throttle for P2W, it's demanded, or you lose.

@@__________8997 Can assure you, Genshin Impact is pretty F2P-friendly. The game progression is incredibly fair even for F2Ps where even the P2Ws have to farm alot for good gear, the character and weapon rolls have a pity system to allow you to get them eventually and even in the battle pass, there are only a few weapons that are not the best in slot for any of the characters, just simply competes with the other weapons that are easier to obtain (of course this depends on the characters themselves). Hell, even the end-game is doable with multiple kinds of teams and without spending a single buck. P2W is really for those who like to be competitive simply and want to break the game with big numbers.

@@__________8997 Do take note that Genshin Impact took a progression that'll probably last atleast 6+ years, would you rather pay for all of its new continents a like 60 dollars or would you rather optionally pay to play with certain characters and with certain weapons while having access to literally all the quests and stuff free of charge? Of course I'm one who is against gacha systems and I absolutely can't stand them, Genshin though is so far the only one that doesn't make me feel like I'm severely limited in options atleast and can even enjoy the full game if I want to without weeks or months of grinding P2Ws would usually be able to skip through (yet here, they can't really).

You know what would make the resonance armor appearances much cooler? if you couldn't just throw money at the game to get it. if it was a symbol of your dedication to the grind and how much you love the game, it would be much cooler. instead of just being a symbol of how much money you wasted.

As I'm watching this I get an update from play store that I can now download the game lol

I still remember when some guy bought a legendary crossbow for like $13k and then that crossbows affect got changed like 3 weeks later. Still miss my puzzle ring having a 4% chance to spawn loot goblins on hit. (But on the upside I do like pets items)

Imagine saying Genshin Impact was the first western accepted pay2win game when League of Legends is one of the most played games of all time.

I personally don't care if mobile games are p2w, I don't want to have the best gear, I just want to play games on public transport so I don't get bored looking out the window. PC/Console games are another story though.

At this rate we really don't have phones as we have to sell them to play the game... Need a Megapint after this BS.

Waited so many years for the next diablo game and instead we get a slot machine

Asmon, the Elder Scrolls Oblivion Horse Armor was the *second* instance of DLC content in a game, although arguably the first instance of it in its current form. The first actual instance I know of is a few years earlier with the Inner Sphere and Clan Mech Packs for Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance(~$30 each, launched July 26 2002). Each added 4 (very overpowered) mechs of the respective type to your arsenal that were already in the game files, but not otherwise accessible. They also added a community made map that was taken and sold.

The fact, we have to talk about free to play players and pay to win is quite sad on itself.

You know the video is good, if Asmon can turn a 16:45 min video, into a 1:12:28 video

Cosmetics are also 25$ and single use. Means you spend 25$+ on one armor set per character

"Being conditioned to where it becomes the norm" is the statement that says it all. That has become the world we live as we are inundated by information every second of the day and it simply wears people down until they just accept it.

They should add this to WoW. The WoW token isn’t at its max potential.

If you buy a token you get random gems from 1 to 1000 and here is the catch. You can increase the chance with blue gems to get more gems. Wirh the gems you buy gametime at a exchangerrate. More gems at one trade = more gametime. And you can buy Skins with it. The cool thing is we can implement it ingame to give people that boost the ability to get paid for there services(but every trade has a 30% fee) So we invalidate gold and replace it with a better System you cannot get without money. Win win.

I am hoping that Blizzard has seen all this negative feedback and has been working on a fix for launch day. However knowing Blizzard, they'll probably ignore the community for the next 8 months and say "sorry we didn't hear you guys sooner" then release an update that gives an increased 0.000025% chance at legendary crests for F2P players

I’m pretty sure we’re on track gaming wise where the biggest game is gonna be a sword art online/ready player one with NFTs in them. Could be in the next 10 years or 100, who knows.

Actually the microtransactions I have seen in games back in 2005. The social MMO games, like the Sims, Second Life, and a few others had them back then. These were all for cosmetic items. Yet depending on the social things your hoping to do a few actually require spending some on the microtransactions as there are people in these games that won't go for someone in the basic outfit options. As far as the mobile player going to do some research on-line it is more for when they are becoming invested into the game and want to grind out something specific or if they want better standing on the PVP side of that game. The mobile research is mainly on the PVP side and very few on the PVE side. On the PVE side it is more about figuring out what the up coming event is and what characters and or items that will be needed to be able to clear the challenges coming up so as the build up those units/characters and store or budget purchasing those items.

What could've been another expansion for D3 Blizzard decides to cut content and turn it into a pay to win mobile game.

I'd be cool to retaliate against these types of games, imagine we were somehow able to protest so that insanely few people would play it. I feel really sorry for people who can't help themselves when it comes to p2w games

@@rinroarpog7809 I dont know what reality you're living in, but whales spend that much to get an advantage over other players and if 99% of the game community leaves, they'll have a lot less reason to buy, firstly because they'll be fighting against other whales and not pawning noobs, which for those ego driven players is a big sticking point. Obviously some whales will still pay, but it will turn off other whales from playing especially if the game has the reputation of players leaving and being dead.

@@charlethemagne5466 yes that's the end state of these games but look at call of duty, just make a new game right after it dies. It's just how it works in this economy. If the game is inherently not good it won't even make it long enough for them to know if any whales would've bitten. Now if we had a game as addictive as Skyrim but pay to win or pay to keep playing oh what Skyrim online is a thing destiny 1&2 maybe a 3rd at some point, but pay2win has won already your trying to force back time it just won't work.

i think in some games especially gacha, it is already is a real title for some huge spenders. especially in the Chinese market. cause oh boy they spend a lot of money in lootbox and gacha games. more than Japanese ones.

Too flattering. "Whale" is a good term because it doesn't sound cool to be a whale (even though they're amazing creatures). "Poseidon" isn't a good term, because it does sound cool to be a sea god.

As someone who has paid off their student loans I still think forgiving the interest and just keeping them at 0% interest is a reasonable step to the studen loan depth. You don't get free money. They can't be removed by bankruptcy. And you don't have to pay 150k for a 30-40k loan.

I don't think it's pay to win it's more like pay to get a chance to win

I listened to this while playing PoE actually and it was my first thought as well. it was later qualified with "for microtransactions", but yeh, you have to buy a stash tab for your ingame currency types eventually (stash tabs are way cheaper than visual mtx btw)

Was pretty obvious to me that he was talking about premium currencies (ones connected to real money and used for micros) PoE only has 1, the rest are more like consumable items for in-game stuff and has no connection whatsoever with real money. Should be pretty obvious for anyone who's played PoE what the difference is. The people in chat who were spamming PoE were just blatant gotcha andies imo because you'd have to purposefully misunderstand his point to actually make that argument.

After watching this I have lost any interest I had left in this game lol. This is absolutely ridiculous. Yeah sure you can say that this is for the whales and you can play most of the Content for free but knowing that my progression is severely hamstrung by these systems is just awful.

Can't wait to see the quarterly report that includes this!

I don't understand how you feel accomplished when you lose to a boss in elden ring and then you go out and buy gems for 99$ to upgrade your weapons and armor to +10 to absolutely maul the boss. To me it's like if you could pay 1000$ to just skip to the end credits. The reasons bosses are at the difficulty they are designed for and the feeling you get when you beat it within the confines of the game are completely thrown over the board when you can just pay to increase your strength. It's like playing a game with cheat engine. Fun for 5 minutes and then you move on

Everyone agreed Blizzard used to have perfect track record in games. It went down the drain shortly after Activision. Already in Burning Crusade and Wrath of Lich King the favors started racking up to the casuals with the free "invite a friend" XP, char boosts. Item rarity took a total blow from then on; no items are really rare, we are all grinding the same stuff. Its all cheap instance servers not utilizing the existing environment and world, just trying to cut server costs.. Ultra-low % thottbot drops and grinding big bosses is what made the game fun. Also Hearthstone.. scam. RIP Blizzard.

And in the current game we see what happens when everything starts catering only to the hardcore. You need a middle ground otherwise nobody wins. MMOs need a casual player base because newsflash, it's a bigger portion of the player base than the hardcore which means more sub money for the game. And in turn, you need the hard core players to show the casuals what they could have if they put in a bit of effort and join a raid team or something. There's nothing for casual players to do in WoW other than transmog or mount farming. Nobody is interested in running mythic dungeons because it's full of sweaty hard core players who kick people for simple mistakes and the only thing the game has going is the same gear treadmill it's had since day 1. The formula has gotten tired and other games offer much more than WoW does anymore. As for Hearthstone...yea that trash is a scam.

best experience i ever had in WoW was actually a private classic server, the legendary neck dropped and the whole raid went apeshit. Evidently horde had gotten the drop a few months before, and the "GMs" ended up taking it away from us a couple weeks later. But thats the real shit that makes MMORPGs fun. And the talisman neck went to a druid, but our guild loved flexing it in IF haha. EDIT: didnt spent a dime for my most memorable end-game MMORPG experience.

@@dinozorman I could totally see that. I got off after original WoW and Burning Crusade. I'm pretty glad I did to be honest. The original game had so much more MMORPG-content planned. The original strategy book was essentially a drool for any MMORPG-fan.. When you saw Legendary and Artifacts (drops per server), you got excited to get those drops. Thottbott-lookup days was golden.

Im so glad this game is banned in my country now lol

The reason I know Asmon is my spirit animal is cause he used the "Yo Dawg" meme and didn't bat an eye.

They will have weekly events that will reward the currency you can only get with money which will pull some people but only people who spend thousands will rank high enough to win it. There's already a ton of mobile games like that. I used to play a them when they came out and they are good for about 3 months until people start dropping stacks on it and people who don't have zero chance to win anymore.

wait, so the legendary crests are, are they like a gacha system? or a lootbox system? I saw the word "Pity" and from what I understand its a word thrown around quite a bit in Gachas

Remember when Blizzard made an April Fools joke about Diablo becoming a P2W mobile game? Seems like a bygone dream that you forget after you wake up now. This game is already making terms like Gigawhale. I think a level above Whale should be Leviathan.

You might not like the gameplay of PoE, but at least they make sure that there is NO PAY-TO-WIN EVER. Hopefully this is a thing which lasts forever. The moment I saw the disgusting P2W in a Diablo game, It cemented the idea that the Blizzard I respected no longer existed.
