I think it’s great if you can feel like you and your *coworkers* have some sort of family. that’s dope, but there is no situation where an employee truly can be, or should be made to feel as though they should be, in that situation with their employer. as a worker you owe your solidarity and your support to your fellow workers. the only thing you owe your employer is the completion of the tasks you agreed to complete, there is no, should be no, and can be no relationship beyond that.

For context, I'm a non-union actor and I work for a production company MUCH smaller than Dhar Mann and I make $45/hr with strict shooting hours agreed to about a week before shooting. Acting is fundamentally unstable, and you often don't work a full day, so you either need a holding fee, a day rate, or have a strict shooting schedule so you know how much you're making. $33/hr with none of that is incredibly unethical.

I’m a nurse and not a single for-profit company gives a shit about us, nor do they listen when we want to speak up about the sometimes abhorrent conditions of our workplaces either, and it’s just incredibly sad and disheartening. Especially when you’re a dedicated employee who is just trying to do what you love, or need to do to get by in this wack ass world. He and his company must be confident in this blowing over or like nothing will come of it, and I hope they’re wrong. No one deserves to be traumatized at work. Not to mention Jazlyn Nicolette was forced to take her video down because Dhar Mann served her with a cease and desist letter, and a lot of other actors got unfair copyright strikes by the big Mann as well.
I was SO disheartened about this situation because prior to finding Jarvis' channel, I primarily watched Dhar Mann videos with my baby brother. The majority of our fun were seeing the same actors over and over, reprise the same roles in every one. Sure the videos were goofy and the writing of how the situations were handled were sometimes alarmingly bad, LOL.. But it was made up for by how genuinely fun a lot of the actors were. So to see our favorites like Rachel, Colin, and Mair (my personal BIG favorite, she carried every video she was in) get treated poorly felt unreal and awful... Learning that they're starting a new channel AND they've met the minimum on their funding goal has made this story SO much better. I wish them all the best!!
This is precisely why things like SAG exist. You need a union/guild to avoid getting just totally abused like this. Maybe we'll see an internet content creator actor's guild form out of these kinda disasters.

Kind of a stretch The working conditions and treatment here are universally different. The biggest thing with BA was Adam was a prick (they fired him) and there was ‘unequal pay’ but between people within different ranks of the company so that’s highly debatable. Also babish is a major creep. Marginally better than Adam
Hearing that the actors will make their own videos was sweeeet hope it works out and exited to watch those on stream.
The fact that he’s still not paying his actors enough despite all the pushback is astounding to me. No I’m not surprised some rich guy is mistreating his employees, but you’d think he’d finally get the hint after awhile. As trash as his videos are, the actors have always been the saving grace since they always seemed to be giving it their all. They basically made his channel and don’t deserve this.

Oh my god, jazlyn's story is downright terrifying. That is so scary. I can't believe that they wouldn't let her talk to him. I mean, he put her in danger, for no reason; and they can't even free up 30 minutes in his stupid schedule for her to talk to him? Pure evil. Truly, the fact that she was able to go back at all is so strong of her. She shouldn't have to, and I really hope she's able to get some financial compensation and some counseling for such a terrible experience. The little "we are family" video is so dystopian. Like, it feels manipulative. I can feel like the actors (especially all the teenagers) being manipulated from here. So sad. It's really awesome to see the protesting actors start their own channel though. That's so sweet, and i hope it's successful.

It is always heartbreaking when these big corporations just get away with stuff like this.
paying hourly but only for that very specific few hours they’re actively acting, instead of all the hours they’re on set/told they’re needed, is straight up wage theft. it’s not an uncommon grift when it comes to guys like dhar who are only concerned about making as much money as possible (which means finding ways to pay others as little as possible). seen it so many times but laws almost always favor the business owners over their workers in america, and owners more often win in court cases when challenged.

What happened to the other video
About the knife thing: as someone currently in film school and taking production classes, having a real knife instead of a prop knife is a MAJOR no no. Literally safety is supposed to be top priority and we have to jump through a thousand hoops to use fake weapons, as it should be. Not only is it incredibly dangerous and probably several levels of illegal to have an actor RUN with a real weapon, let alone chase another actor. Accidents happen and if either of them tripped it could lead to life changing injuries (death is probably unlikely but if an actor has a facial injury/scar it can affect their livelihood and financial means) and if she had any trauma memories related to someone pulling a knife on her etc, it could’ve given her such a severe panic attack it could have required hospitalization and sedation. I am so so so so SO proud of that girl for leaving. When someone tries to pressure you into something that makes you uncomfortable, please remember you can leave. Exit the situation and always put your safety and comfort first. That flight response is so important yet so overlooked, please listen to your instincts and never let anyone coerce you into staying and complying. Please, as someone who learned that lesson the hard way, look out for yourself

It's so common for people to build their image on kindness to actually be some of the worst assholes ever, because they have bought their own bullshit. They are so convinced of their own righteousness that it can't be that they made a mistake, everyone else has to be wrong. It makes them more insufferable than garden variety assholes because at least they have some self awareness
A man that directs videos intended to spread kindness, turning out to not be tearing his actors properly, said actors calling him out and turning around and creating their own production company is an entire Dhar Mann set up, twist, and resolution.
That’s really sweet that they’re doing something different! I feel like the actors have a lot to offer more than the singular roles Dharr usually had them in so it’ll be nice to see them explore that :)
the crew that left creating their own channel reminds me of a lot of buzzfeed creators doing the same thing back in the day, and i'm really happy for them! i hope they get the success they deserve :)
The fall of Dhar Mann is somehow both the most shocking thing to happen, but also like something everyone saw coming.
Paying your workers properly is ✨ GOLD ✨
Did the gold man dox himself in a shane dawson conspiracy video????
NGL this situation, esp. them forcing actors to set aside multiple days, then only paying them for a few hours of work, almost reminds me of a situation in old-school Hollywood, when Olivia de Haviland sued her contracted movie studio. She was not permitted to do work for other studios without their explicit permission, but they almost entirely gave her small "arm candy" type roles that inhibited her career and didn't pay nearly what a more prominent role would. In fact, some of her biggest parts in that period were when she convinced them to 'loan her out' to other studios. Toward the end of her contract, she started refusing the smaller roles they offered her and was put on a suspension for it. Then, when her contract was set to end, they claimed she owed 6 months of extra time for the 'suspension' period. Her lawsuit was actually a landmark case in Hollywood to benefit the treatment of contractually-obligated actors. I can only assume that the Dhar Mann studio doesn't hire full time actors to get around these sort of obligations to give them rights and benefits. I've seen the same with "adjunct" college teachers who are hired contractually per class and are not considered 'real' employees of the university, so they're paid less and aren't eligible for benefits.
Absolutely loving the worker solidarity. This is the kind of class conscious reporting you can only find on a GOLD channel.
I’m so happy for the crew that left. The show idea actually looks cut and they HIT THEIR GOAL!!

Jarvis's hair is just first day hair for anyone wondering. It's sometimes a thing with textured hair; You'll notice a lot of black people don't like their own freshly washed look.
