    Dexter throughout his career put on 50+lbs of muscle but a very gradual pace.He never got sloppy during the off season,he trained smart and learned how to put the most tension on the muscle (thanks to Charles Glass) and when he started working with George Farah for his conditioning,he was a revelation.Dexter at his best is pure aesthetics.His physique was ahead of its time.He never caved to the bigger is better crowd.

    If you are trying to say any single IFBB pro BB in open makes a conscious decision to carry less muscle than their competitors then that is a misunderstanding. Does it really look like Dexter Jackson was sparing any effort to put as much muscle as humanly possible on his body, I mean sure if you mean, he wasn't getting as high of BF in the off season then yes, but any open competitor is trying to be as muscular as physically possible.

    @@FeralFlareMasterYi He's said that he couldve easily put on at least 20lbs more of muscle but that doing so quickly would blow out his proportions.I think its 2014 or 2015 that he showed what working with George Farah brought to his physique.He massed up but was fucking shredded.Glutes,hamstrings,and lowerback were bonkers. I mean watch him on stage.He always looked fresh faced and never looked winded from the mandatory's.Other pros be putting on weight so fast that they develop sleep apnea and need a machine to help them breathe.

    @@valasuenos475 That is valid, I'm just wondering how did he know that he could have done that? Was he taking X amount less gear that cost him 20 lbs of muscle gain. Was he lifting X less weight that he knows over time would have yielded him 20 more lbs. Seems like there is something to it and statements are statements, but it just seems a little coulda shoulda to me.

    @@FeralFlareMasterYi This could be a rumor but Dexter's drug use was relatively tame compared to most pros.Hes got that light bone structure like Flex Wheeler had.Just made him look freakier.I think its more of getting tests done to see his muscle composition and when you're at that level you know every inch of your physique and what can go where.Then again I believe he did it for health as well as aesthetic reasons.Hes smaller so he doesn't need as much pure bulk.Think of smaller bodybuilders,think of Lee Priest or Rich Gaspari.Rich Gaspari actually decided to lose muscle and mass in order to compete.Lee Priest actually beat Ronnie one time I think.Dexter beat Cutler.Now Im not gonna deny that Cutler came back the next year looking like a fucking Trex lol it can be done though and Dexter routinely did so.

    I am a medical professional and have enjoyed bodybuilding all my life. Heavy weights wear joint's prematurely. Fat people carry heavy body weight and have joint problems. It wear's the joints my friends. Exercise is great but anything excess get's results. How much do you want to pay ? I believe Ronnie gave everything and would do it again. This is why I am not competitive but love the sport. It's a true joy for me at age 54 to train with my 16, 20 and 22 year old sons. These times are better than stepping on the stage.

    true brilliance in switching to mostly machines. the slight difference in physiques only matters if you are on the stage at the elite levels. If you are a regular person, normal athlete, then take Dex's advice and make the changes. You will be able to workout well into your 60's that way. Most machines actually force your body in bad positions and can do more damage then free weights. So I don't agree entirely with him. Performing the exercives correct, even if it is a squat, deathlift, and not taking to much weight, having enough rest, stay away from doping, and you can have longetivity 2, AND build more functional strenght then with machines.

To be honest, machine that follow the natural movement patterns are rather an exception. Most of them. Force you in dangerous positions. Jackson is no proof what so ever, we call that anecdotical. There are also people that smoked 3 packs a day and live to see 100 without any health problems, that doesn't proof smoking is not dangerous. I would rather attribute Jackson longevity (in fact he isn't even that old) to more repetitions, lesser weight, genetic components. He just didn't do a demolition job on his body like most bodybuilders from that day did.

    @@skullleaderx4986 I agree, there are good machines, the trick is that they should follow the natural movement of the body. I'm not sure all nautilus do that. But then there still is the problem that machines don't train functional strenght, coordination and stabilty as well as free weights. I guess for bodybuilders that's not so much an issue, but I like to have strenght I can actually use in real life.

    I’m 58 and I have been training 42 years. I prolapsed a disc deadlifting with improper form when I was 20 (showing off how strong I was) and it taught me a valuable lesson. It took me 2 years to recover post surgery and learn how to train for longevity. I’m training 3-4x a week now with 50-75% of my peak weights but at higher reps (10-15 versus 6-8) with much better form and totally focused on the feeling. The results are fantastic. You can train forever if you can avoid injury and focus on the feeling.

  • @travismanley4879
    @travismanley48792 жыл бұрын

    I think more than anything, if you're talking about non-professional lifting... It depends on what your accessory movements and recovery days look like in regards to how your joints and body respond. It also depends on intention. You can go much lighter, but if your intention of the movement is to move the weight(while keeping control) as quickly and forcefully as possible, you'll still increase muscle mass and build a lot of strength without the need to put excessive strain on the joints themselves. I think intention within the immediate movement is a big part of lifting that is extremely under-discussed. Are you moving slow and controlled? Are you going through movements? Are you trying to explode as hard as you possibly can? All of these different things create a different neurological synapse. I also think contracted stretching is extremely overlooked(i.e. You contract your entire leg prior to attempting a toe touch). Stretching like this stretches the muscle itself, while allowing the ligaments and insertion of tendons to remain taunt, thus reducing the chance of joint injuries overall by improving blood flow to the connective tissues while maintaining structural stability. There's a lot of facets in the human body that are either dismissed or ignored due to pop culture or the community of specific sports. I think it's important if we all learn and discuss every modality possible so we can all achieve our goals and maintain strength and conditioning well into the later years of life. Rather than thinking a single mentality is the only effective method. Dexter here clearly shows you don't have to follow the herd to be absolutely fantastic.
