Both sides of this argument are indefensible for the exact same reason: accountability. Vigilantes like Dexter have zero accountability. No due process, no defence for the guilty, and most of all, no consequences for false positives. If Dexter accidentally killed an innocent, he’d only be called to task for it by his own conscience. Meanwhile Doakes is one of many, many cops that take advantage of qualified immunity. In real life, vigilantism is a problem because of false positives. It’s not a crime because of the way that the guilty get held to task, but the innocent that get taken down in the process. Police accountability is a separate problem. There can be reform in the legal and justice systems. But vigilantes CANNOT be forced to be accountable because their authority is self granted.

THIS . THIS is what pissed me off about the new show. I adored it, until the end. Dexter never would have killed Logan like that in new blood. He had every incentive to kill him here, but refuses. Dexter is willing to go to jail so he doesn't have to kill doax. He agonizes over every innocent person that he has a situation like what with. Throughout the entire show over and over again he does everything he can against his own self interest to not kill an innocent person with numerous people throughout the show. Plus in new blood he never ever ever would have been convicted. Nothing they had on him would have landed him in prison for murder. Dokes was the bay harbor butcher to everyone, legally. They wouldn't just have to prove Dexter did it, they'd have to prove dokes didn't. And that all that hard proof that dexter planted, was all lies. And all this vague circumstancial evidence that's WAYYYY weaker than that, is the right evidence this time. No jury is going to believe that. And Dexter running away after everything that happened, would be totally believable to a jury. ESPECIALLY after what's her face found the bodies at the end of new blood. He didn't even wait to see how that played out. Dexter caught the guy she'd been after that slaughtered her friends. You'd think maybe, maybe, she'd end up having some sympathy towards the guy when she came back to the station. But nah.

Very valid issues, those inconsistencies bugged me a bit too. But I think that’s part of the point: Dexter wasn’t his usual calculated self anymore. He’d become sloppy due to being out of the serial killing game for so many years, but more importantly, his desperation to be with Harrison is what made him act out in such a rash way. The tragic irony is that it was this act done out of love for his son that ultimately made his son turn on him. Also, in all fairness to Dexter, he wasn’t setting out to kill Logan there. The writers have stated that he was just trying to escape and that Logan’s gunshot ricochetted off the wall (I think this could’ve been executed a bit more clearly so as to avoid the confusion for fans, but still).
