DeWalt's New 400 ft-lb Compact vs M12 Fuel: DCF901 Dyno Tested

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Our lifetime of TOOL RANKINGS torquetestchannel.etsy.com
M12 is now $160 amzn.to/3e0mn4q and here's the DeWalt: low.es/3mR6t0j DeWalt's latest DCF901B takes on the trusty 2555-20 Milwaukee M12 FUEL in this timely head to head as the DeWalt just touched down days ago. There are no losers in this one, but there is 1 winner. There was a typo on the rank list and the IR35MAX should be 254.1 points, so not at the bottom. Apologies. It's really difficult to beat air in this category.

I finally bought the new DCF901. I was hesitant because it did not have the 3 mode selection switch like it's little brother, the 902, and the M12 Stubby. But, it doesn't need it. The variable speed trigger provides sufficient control over speed and torque when spinning off nuts, like lugs. You simply let off from full trigger pull when the nut breaks loose and it slows quickly and will not fling the nut. Same with installing. You simply let off when the nut bottoms out. The trigger allows low speed use for avoiding crossed threads. The smaller 902 is a better tool for all around use to remove and install smaller hardware and with the mode switch, precise use to avoid breaking hardware and stripping threads. And, with a 3/8" square to 1/4 hex, and it's mode switch, the 902 is good for a wood screw impact driver around the house and for working on a motorcycle. The 5ah on the 902 gives it at least 20% more power, enough for car and light truck lugs torqued to 100ft lbs or less. I rotated all 4 tires on my car with it yesterday and it was a pleasure. The 901 was just faster. Together, they make perfect set of impacts for almost every nut and bolt on a motorcycles, passenger cars and light trucks, and all but the big hardware on full size trucks.

I agree with the 12v DeWalt feeling much better, they really thought it through with how they designed the batteries in terms of the charger compatibility which at the same time allowed them to slim down the grips on the 12v tools with the added convenience of being able to set down the drill and drivers and not have them tip over even with the smallest battery packs. I hate using the small M12 batteries for that reason alone, I have half a dozen of them laying around that I never really use because anything you put them on becomes top heavy. Thing is I only have two 12v DeWalt tools because, well, there's not much to choose from and I really thought DeWalt abandoned that line of tools so I was planning on of getting rid of them because I have seven M12 tools and figured I can get an 8th, but with the recent come back DeWalt is making, I'm going to see if they might offer some more specialty tools before I pull the plug.

I'm a Milwaukee guy but don't bear any malice toward any other tool brand. The DeWalt is impressive. I was blown away when the M12 stubbies were released. I own all 3. I'm not a fan of slide packs, but I have big hands. One little addressed factor, which is a big one for me is how many tools you can fit into your bag, cart or box. The larger bases on slide pack tools is EXTREMELY limiting in the this department. But then, Dewalt doesn't have that many 12v tools, so......... well.... they need to get busy on new tools. there are over 100 tools in the M12 line. THAT was why I chose Milwaukee after my Dewalt cordless tools were stolen. Both brands make excellent tools. The release of the M18 stubbies was a big nothing burger to me. I suppose for those who only want one battery, which is a valid point, it kind of makes sense. But not really. The ratchets are already M12. That said, it's awesome to see DeWalt get one up on Milwaukee. Real competition means more, better tools will be in the pipe soon from all the major brands. Well done DeWalt.

I do not think either is a bad choice. To me what makes either a solid choice is what other tools you already have. If you have more batteries that are compatible it makes more sense to stick with one of these over another just for that convenience since they are both great at what they are intended to do. They have reasonable power for tight spaces. If more power is needed there are tools that excel in those areas sure but they usually fail to fit in a tight spot and using extensions costs us power and causes more fatigue as we use these tools. Thank you for a well made video. I love this channel.

I look forward to the next video that compares torque between batteries on the M12 platform. It would be cool to see a knockoff battery thrown in the mix, as I'm wondering how aftermarket cells effect the torque performance. There's also a dispute on whether a 1/2" anvil delivers more torque than a 3/8". I'd love to see a video comparing the two, without adaptors.

So with your question of the M12 4.0 vs 6.0, there is no way the 6.0 could perform better than the 4.0 besides runtime. The cells used in the 4.0 are actually better than the cells used in a 6.0. In lithium tech, when you go up in capacity you almost always sacrifice something else (either size, max discharge, or efficiency). This is one of those cases where the Samsung cells used in the 4.0 actually have a higher discharge rate than the cells used in the 6.0. Then there's the discussion with the CPs, and the same thing applies. Tldr: use a XC wherever you can. 3.0CPs suck everywhere. 2.0CP the best CP and 4.0 is the best XC.

@@juanc5149 I already watched the real shop tools video. The use of a 3/8 to 1/2 socket adaptor on the 3/8 may be the reason for the increased torque. As socket mass might play a bigger role in torque output than anvil size. Which is why... I'm interested in this test being redone without the use of an adaptor, in order to determine the role anvil size plays on it's own. Also, I really don't care about the marketing backstory that Dewalt or Milwaukee pedals that their impact wrenches are forged with the envy in their competitors success. All I'm wondering is whether the difference in torque is due to the 5.0ah v 4.0ah battery.

But as proven in torque test's new video this isn't the case, the 6.0ah outperforms the 4.0ah initially then they both even out. Likely because the stubby doesn't reach 30amps, and the 6.0ah is able to maintain 12v for longer.

@@omarm6678 Capacity is irrelevant in this test due to the short runs, so it isn't like the 6.0 can provide a higher voltage for longer. Actually, due to the higher discharge rate of the cells used in the 4.0, they theoretically vdroop less. Something else is going on here as to why the 6.0 performs better. Could just be the actual batteries used (older cells are, more they vdroop), or the acceptable error rate between runs. Doesn't really matter in the end though! Actually what he said is completely correct: the tool doesn't use the more amperage the 4.0XC can provide. His tests proved this. :) Anyway an interesting outcome. Would love to see the CP2.0 vs CP3.0 vs XC though!

I will say this about Milwaukee vs DeWalt. I'm a GM automotive technician. 1 year ago I bought the Milwaukee 1/2" impact, long story short, the both batteries quit within a year. First one quit after 4 months, second one after 10 months. I just sent my batteries out to Milwaukee for warranty, so I'll see how that goes. But in the meantime, my Dewalt 1/2" gun that is about 6 years old, is currently taking the place of my milwaukee, with the original battery, and it still lasts all day long before needing a charge. That same battery, also powers my at home tools (circular saw, screw gun, drill) and that one battery is still going strong. So lately, I have some doubts about Milwaukee.

It has a bolted hammer cover, compared to the dewalt. I'd rather avec 20ft-lbs less of torque, but a tool that i can rely on and trust! My 2 cents Also, you need to test it again with a 6.0 battery!

The 2019 12v Xtreme DCF902 came with a sub par 2ah battery. Even 3ah was a bit undersized. The new 5ah makes a significant improvement in the tool's seat of the pants performance. It breaks loose lug nuts in half the time, and performs the same on all 5 lug nuts, where before, the power dropped off enough to not be able to remove all 5. The Man Cave channel tests all the 12V Xtreme tools, and they all perform better. Perhaps Dewalt giving a free 5ah battery with new tool purchase in March-April was their way of making things right? The new DCGLF901 & 903 tools use a larger brushless motor, purportedly the same as a 20v tool. Which one? I'm speculating they used 20v Atomic brushless motor. Eventually, someone will take the tools apart and compare. They'll likely find a combination of incremental improvements that take advantage of the 12v, 5ah battery: A larger motor, larger hammer & spring, and higher amperage motor control circuit, in a slightly larger case. All which, when combined, double the specified torque of the 12v impact tools. Personally, I'm pleased with the improved output the 5ah battery provided my older 902 tool. I needed about 20% more torque from it and it seems to have it early in the curve. The drill and driver are much improved, as proven by Man Cave.

My snappy is old, but it's only ever been good for around 100lb/ft since new and the dewalt will easily crack off a fresh half inch bolt torqued to 175lb/ft vs the M12 hanging up around 150lb/ft. Please test DCF901 vs 902 with 2ah & 5ah battery. The 902 came with a 2AH battery, which caused severe drop off of torque after a few lug nuts, or less than a minute of use. But, does 5AH on 902 increase peak torque, or just maintain max torque over time? I ask, because many of us bought the 3/8" DCF902 after it was released in 2019, and it would good to know if the new Dewalt 12v Xtreme are worth the cost of upgrade, or if one could simply use cheater bar for the occasional tougher nut the 902 cant crack, with a 5ah battery. One should note that the new Dewalt DCF901 and 903 impacts lack the unique speed and torque control features of it's predacessor, the DCF902.
