Dewalt DWE 7485 table saw review series - Episode 2 Calibration

Dewalt DWE 7485 table saw review series - Episode 2 Calibration
I finally took the plunge and purchased a compact table saw for my workshop, this is in an attempt to improve the productivity and throughout of the workshop. Although I love the track saw approach - I wanted something quick, easy and accurate for rip cuts and cross cuts.
After some research I decided to go for the DeWalt.
Although this is aimed at the contract market and should spend its life out on site, I am pretty confident I can tune it for accurate cuts as part of my furniture and craft business.
This is a multi part series
Video 1 - will unbox the table saw and look at the key features
Video 2 - will setup and calibrate the table saw
Video 3. - will put it through its paces on a simple craft project

For safety reasons, when using the rip fence, it is good practice to ensure that the ripping width is smaller than the other dimension of the workpiece (not doing this can cause the workpiece to fly across the room, a major concern in a professional workshop 😋). The miter gauge should be used to support the workpiece along its largest dimension, and one should ensure that the rip fence doesn't extend behind the axis of the blade (which usually means using a spacer of sorts when using the rip fence as a stop for cross cuts). Regarding dust collection, I'd expect connecting a dust hose to the blade guard dust port would improve things (although there will likely still be some dust coming out), while making things safer as well

Hi Francois, Thank you for the feedback, really good tips. I will put this advice into practice. The feed in on this device is pretty small, so the mitre gauge is limited - A cross cut sled will be introduced very quickly, as will a feed in extension. The cross cut sled will also remove the need for the spacer - so better all round. Yes, I now have. Y connector giving me top and bottom dust extraction, a 1000 times better. Kind Regards Andy

Hi Mike, likewise I had the dust issue with my DWE7492, but you'll find that if you use the blade guard with the secondary dust extraction port, coupled up to your main dust port, or like me two separate sources of dust extraction, you'll significantly reduce the dust over the table. However, as with any table saw, as well as any other type of powered saw, 100% dust collection is a pipe dream, so the only real solution is to have dust extraction from both dust ports & to wear a half decent half face mask, preferable one to FPP3 standard. Keep up the good work with your videos, they're all very informative.

Nice video again Andy. Tempted to upgrade from my Metabo TS 254 M to this one. The Metabo is a decent machine, but I think DeWalt is the only small/jobsite saw maker that actually delivers reliable accuracy. One plus of the Metabo is that it does quite well with dust collection. It has a plastic sheet underneath the blade that prevents the dust coming up (on first powering on the saw it cuts through that, shooting some plastic chips up). Maybe DeWalt can implement it as well.

Great video Andy, for me this is a site saw where I would say the dust extraction isn’t going to be great without a overhead crown guard with extraction. I’m surprised with the sound levels of this machine and also the brake on the blade when you switched it off or was that just me thinking it took more then normal to come to a stop. I’m looking at the flexvolt version of this saw and I’m hoping it will be a little bit quieter. stock level on power tools at the moment is very hit and miss at the moment.

Hi, Yes lots of things seem to be on back order at the moment. I have now rigged up the saw with overhead extraction (the one that came with the table) and used the Festool Y connector to connect to the shop vac. Works pretty well. The blade does stop pretty quickly, not as quick as my Kapex or TS55 but not to bad. Yes noise remains the issue, hopefully a decent cabinet will calm that down. Andy

Certainly for safe cross cutting. Dust collection when you put on the top guard is actually pretty good. It is loud! But the fence is good, although would like to have seen a t-track on it for feather boards. Should be a quick modification. But overall, I think it is going to be OK. Cheers Andy

Hi Andy, We also bought one machine two weeks ago and had the same consequences as you. Your test was thoroughly, thank you for that. However one view point was missing, the flatness of the table top. In our case is not even, moreover it has some of 0.2 mm dips in the middle sections between the two guide rail grooves (and it has a not even insert). Using a straight edge on the entire surface light shines through on the spots; and those places are clearly visible under good light conditions too. I don't know how the exact manifacturing of this moulding works, but the simmetrical, manifacture related patterns are visible on the surface which are independent of caring or packing. This and the plate inaccuracy is should be a dealbraker for me for the money, but how we stand now upon the situations in the world (here in Hungary the stocks are low) and there is no suitable competitor in this price range, size, equipment and fence system, so there is no way to blame with it at the shop. Anyway my question is connected to the level of the table top. Do you have any deviation or mark on it. Does it matter at all? I know with larger sheets it won't be a problem but smaller pieces I think it will be wise to use a zero clearance insert or use a sled to make the surface even in detriment of the depth of cut. Should I care about the above or the abrasion and time will even the surface and my feelings about it? I know this is a job site table saw but i have no workshop now, but addicted to woodworking and i live in a flat so have small, temporary space in our living room to work. Thank you in advance for your answer!

Hi Wood DIY I covered this in the final video in the series - I have a completely flat top on mine. Not sure if I am lucky or you are unlucky. I think it would matter for narrow stock that require rip cuts that effectively lie on the side of the valley you describe. As the cut would not be square. As you say, for panels that bridge the dip - I don't think it matters. Andy

  • @TheWoodgrafter

    @TheWoodgrafter

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi Craig, I did look at the Axminster and it looks like a great product with a great set of options. However the fence seems pretty poor so would need and upgrade. The DeWalt is very loud, very loud! it is running way over 90db in use - and if you are making a cut without the top dust collector then the dust collection is not that good. I wanted a cheap, accurate, portable saw as it only gets used once in a while - most of my cuts are made with the track saw. It works for what I want, however. If I wanted a solution that was used all the time I think I would look elsewhere. Andy

Here in North America those portable often called contractor saws aren't regarded as being accurate or great dust collection. Not sure if they were designed to be used in fine work but at least here they're often regarded as a saw for a jobsite and thats it. Meant for ripping down plywood for sub floor maybe some rips for hardwood floor but nothing like joinery. Not to say it can't be done with them but out of the box they're not known to be accurate. I've been on numerous jobs where they'll get a new one delivered on site and the carpenters will open it and start using it no calibration. The dust collection isn't a concern here it seems North America or at least Canada looks at dust a lot lighter than the UK or Europe in general. The saws aren't bad for this it's just the intended use behind them is different than what you're expecting. The work they're often used for is not work that is closely examined enough to see if a mitre joint is 0.3 degree off.

Just bought one of these today, and it went straight back - out of the box, the blade was about 6 mm out of alignment relative to the mitre tracks, and I could only correct it to within about 2 mm. (I was able to make it *more* than 6 mm out though). In addition, the fence was slighlty dented (about 1 mm out of true at one end), and the table was not flat, with a peak near the throat plate giving a corner-corner discrepancy of almost 3 mm. So I'm moderately peed off, with the only bright spot in my day being the no-nonsense Screwfix returns policy. I'm hoping that my problems were one off manufacturing defects since I expect a lot better for the 500 quid I handed over.

Taking a decibel reading with the meter in contact with the saw will not give you a true 'airborne' reading (mechanical transmission). Indeed, any measurements outside an anechoic chamber is fraught with difficulty. Best to wear hearing protection regardless. Dust collection- not using the top safety guard/ dust collector will inevitably mean more uncollected dust. I have one of these and a 'proper' table saw- which emits at least as much dust. Mine is an older model- wish the riving knife was as easy to change!

Hi Chewy, Yes that first cut wasn’t finest moment. However I have quickly realised that the infeed is not that big on this table, so the mitre gauge has limited use. A push stick would have made it worse, and increased the ‘twist’ potential of the board. But yes not my best moment. I think a cross cut sled would be the ticket, and when I build the cabinet a larger lead in area. Both of these I think will be essential to turn this into the machine I need.
