Devin Townsend on his relationship with Chad Kroeger

Музыка

Visit us for more: gtrgtr.uk
Devin gives us the low down on the relationship between himself and Chad Kroeger.
About as close to metal royalty as you can get, Devin Townsend's music is both instantly recognisable and absolutely mindblowing. With a shudderingly heavy, yet uplifting sound which is totally one of a kind, he's never satisfied unless he's innovating and his extensive back catalogue is testament to that. Devin was actually first introduced to the masses as a vocalist on Steve Vai's Sex & Religion album, so it's safe to say that he's been impressing the right people from the get-go. However, it's his achievements since that have really put him in a league of his own.
Spearheading a wide range of diverse acts and projects ranging from operatic to extreme metal and even collaborating with bands such as the Wildhearts, Devin has always been at the forefront of new ideas. Personally responsible for some of the heaviest music that the world has ever heard, his contribution to metal is pretty overwhelming and it doesn't hurt that he's also a total beast on the guitar. He famously uses an altered tuning on all of his axes and trust us - it doesn't matter whether he wants to bludgeon you with heavy riffs or dazzle you with more technical licks, Devin's a seriously impressive player who has never been afraid to make a statement or do things his own way.
Right now we're eagerly anticipating the release of his forthcoming album EMPATH which we have no doubt will be among his most creative to date and we're VERY pleased to share that he paid us a visit...

He should be one of them for sure. but as great as Devin Townsend is, his music isn`t as commercially viable, not only is Devin a metal musician which is already a slim market, as metal heads are generally an elitist and narrow minded bunch, but Devin is a prog metal musician, which is quite niche.

So I just randomly watched this. I listened to what he said, I consider myself an open minded human being and musician, so I looked them up.... I heard the first song on a KZread playlist and thought to myself “wow I wish my music sounded just like that“ Just from an engineering perspective it was unbelievably awesome !! And then from the musical and emotional perspective I thought it was really super great. I listened to the next song, the next song, the next song and I thought “I guess I’m one of the guys that likes Nickelback”. I play metal, I play rock, I play jazz, I get hired to play musicals (which have all of the above and more), I toured my entire life as a musician, I teach music for a living, I play six instruments daily (and perform live on all of them throughout the month), I write, produce, & engineer... And I’m super grateful that I watched that seminar to know that if nothing else I’m not one of those guys that says “I like this type of music and that’s it”. Steve

Great to hear this. Love Devin being so real. In my opinion people that hate on Nickelback are just childish and narrow-minded hacks. They wrote some great songs and melodies: How You Remind Me, Someday, Photograph, Savin' Me, Far Away, If Everyone Cared. I listen to that stuff unironically every now and then. I don't care whether the rest is 'shit'. And there is generally no point in hating or pretending to hate someone for the music they put out.

People hate on Nickleback but being from Canada very few bands up here get mainstream recognition beyond Canada...Fact Nickelback just did the same thing AC/DC did figured out that formula of what to sing about and same three cords and melodies that mainstream radio wants to here and made a boat load of money doing it good for them I'd love to do the same thing. People hate and say they would rather be broke and be a real musician then be a Nickelback bullshit! I throw a multi million dollar record deal at you and anyone would take it even Devin just to fund the awesomeness he creates right now. But unfortunately people with the skill level of Devin will never make it to the mainstream radio or the level of Nickelback because the mass population can never and will never see how amazing of a musician he really is and it sucks. The cattle of the world only care about the simple hook of a song.

Here's the thing with hating Nickelback. Sure, a lot of people genuinely don't like that music, but most people who hate on the band just got tired to hearing it everywhere they went for 20 years. Early Nickelback's hard rock sound was incredibly popular on its merit in the early 2000s and it just never left the radio, so as you'd drive to the store, you'd hear Nickelback. Then when you got to Walmart or Macy's or whatever, you'd hear Nickelback's lighter music. Then, when you left the store, you'd hear more Nickelback. And as time went on, and then they continued to make music that would then get put into that rotation, and suddenly you have every store in a town playing the same band at the same time. In many ways, i expect that kind of thing would've happened (to a lesser extent and in a more niche market) if Dev pursued Strapping instead of making Infinity

A lot of people feel they were massively overplayed which... I can sorta see tbh. Lord knows I've come to hate some songs just because I heard them too much. Personally? Loved them as a kid and thought they were pretty ok since then. Hearing that Chad Kroeger apparently, aside from the money, also just really makes music he loves makes me happy. But I don't necessarily think it affects my opinion of their music one way or the other.

Yeah, Chad and Nickleback have done a lot of things Devin hasn't done. But there's one thing Devin has done that Nickleback has (mostly/probably) never done. Devin has connected his music to a nostalgic feeling that all of his fanbase can resonate with sonically. I don't know how he's done it, but it's miraculous and Dev's music has probably changed a few million's lives. (not that NB hasn't, but their music does seem a bit too disingenuous)
