An Acoustic Evening With Devin Townsend at St James Church, London 09.10.2015
Here is some footage of the Devin Townsend solo acoustic gig I did when I saw him in London. At first I didn't want to record it so I did not charge my phone. Sadly I could only capture around one hour until my battery died. Also sometimes the picture gets blurry, I don't know why that happened but I hope you still like the video anyway. Now have fun watching ;-)

How is Devin not the most celebrated musician on the planet?

Because the mainstream music industry is full of cr*p and only out for profit making. Real artists seldom make it to TV and radio these days, unless they make it all by themselves.

Devin's reaction is fucking hysterical.
If the earth were to end in an 1:07:30, I think I would spend it watching this. So beautiful....
33:27 - The world trembles and Devin's soft-spoken nature....
This rendition of Love? is sooooo haunting... I love the original but this is kickass too
I'm not sure there is anyone I have related to more than Devin as a person, watching interviews and stuff I just sit there agreeing with almost everything he says and relating to almost all his experiences of life or opinions on it, it's uncanny, it's cool because I don't feel that relatability hardly anywhere else. Really cool dude.

iktf, go to the HeavyDevy forums and you';ll see a lot of that. the problem is he's a lot like Mark Hamill: some people are just too likeable, and talk such sense, that most people are going to feel some kind of kinship with them. Happens w/ a lot of sadhus as well. Beyond that, being a musician, well....we all find lines we think only we "get"....speaking of which..."The rain it burn the grey line...the greyhound home.." is MY LINE, GO FIND YOUR OWN SPESHUL! So yeah...iktf, and I half-concur, with the humility of the sagacious know-it-all types, haha! Such the fool, I am...

Just a few years ago I'd never watch a phone (or even "real" camera) recording of a concert, mainly becausee of audio quality... Let's all bow our heads to the technological revolution, as this was quite enjoyable. Thanks dude!

and you can always fix the sound on Vegas or similar programs afterward, often you just need to cut -8db the frequencies near 300khz to 450khz and the audio becomes great again
I know it wan't intentional, but I love the reverb in that church, and the way it makes the camera shake.
You wouldn't necessarily expect that acoustic rendition of Love to work, but it really does.
I'd never actually watched a Dev acoustic set before now. I love how much more intimate his stage banter is - it just feels really personal and friendly. I now kind of wish there was a Devy version of Harmontown...
I've never seen him sing that last part of Deadhead like that - I think I prefer it! Dude puts so much emotion into his singing
Singing "All in the name of Love" in a church... pertinent, Devin.
Sad he is most underrated living breathing guitarist alive 😢 To me he is the bestest. Just love this man
I never knew that 'Sister' could be played live... And what a superb rendition here! This 'Ocean Machine' album deserves a special treatment as a whole - I keep hoping...

If you haven't seen it, he also plays "Sister" acoustically on the recent live stream of Ocean Machine. The whole show is incredible.
The way the camera just vibrates is fucking magnificent... When he plays Love? I lose my shit. It just goes with the song so great!
this guy is like the Enya of Guitar..... EPIC. really cool

OMG HE ACTUALLY PLAYED SOLAR WINDS... HMMMMMMMMMM YUMMYYYYY
Amazing. This made me emotional, and laugh at the same time. Wish I could've been there.
Wow.. what an amazing acoustic performance by ours truly. What a fortunate crowd.🖤
The blurry picture was caused by the vibrations on the bass from the looks of things, if you're using an iPhone 6plus or 6s plus, they have a sort of floating lens for the camera, so that could be what happened. Either way, thanks a whole lot for recording this because it's amazing and well worth seeing for those of us who couldn't get over for these shows. :)

savage end to the video cutting out. The scream stole the show.
loving the ghost cam during deadhead !

Great sound!!thanks for sharing!! saludos James.Muchas gracias.
Almost started crying during sister, shame he doesnt play it often.
Wow. Thanks for filming! Midnight Sun and Juular are huge.
Thank you SO MUCH for filming this! Devin never fails to amaze me with his honesty, modesty and incredible musicianship. I must admit that I'm quite jealous of all the guys who got to see him in this intimate and beautiful environment. Absolutely wonderful. Oh and by the way, don't worry about the blurry picture sometimes.. it almost looks like a video effect, makes it even more epic.
Thanks, James, for recording this. 🙏🏼

It must have sounded GREAT in there with the bass hitting the cameras resonance frequency.

Acoustic Midnight Sun is amazing

I still agree with that comment.
He says that he's terrified, but he sure doesn't perform like he's terrified. I'd give a leg to have that kind of stage presence, to say nothing of that musical talent.
Devin is the one!

+Giovanni Perlati He used open C. But drop C should work too.
Does anyone know what kind of delay and reverb he has on his guitar? it seems like there's more ambient stuff being played off a track than actual effects. but I don't see any computers or triggers
@FeelingShred

in this order: delay > reverb > another delay
You say this isn't the complete show? How long was he on for? I missed this as I had to work. I saw the Casualties Of Cool show at The Union Chapel, Islington last year and it was wonderful. Thanks for the upload.

does anyone know what pedal he is using here?
so the guitar sound has a wet-dry-wet setup.... how about the vocal? is his voice coming through those 3 speakers as well?????
What was the guitar app that he used in this performance?
Does anybody know how he achieves that gigantic ambient wash in the background?
@synthjorisendedraak

Lots of reverb and delay, i think they're controlled by the expression pedals. He's done a few videos about his sound over the years about his sound, I think one about his acoustic rig specifically.

what? Deahead is cut off😢?
I didn't know people were ok with cussing in a Church.
Dev's sincere awkwardness here was ... beautifully awkward :)
when devin goes into ih ah - is someone actually being murdered or just auditioning for a murder scene within a horror script? haha!!!! I laughed at that part. tbf, ih ah is one of my favourites also within devin's post 2007 era.
Devin in a church ?
