Devin’s ability to convey a very particular emotion using a full soundscape is uncanny. Like sonically the songs hold on their own, you can vibe out just on how it sounds. But if you’re ever emotionally on a certain wavelength, that’s where his genius becomes evident.

I wish I had been able to go to the Plovdiv Concert it was a truly fantastic night, and an affirmation of the quality of Devin's music. Simply a masterclass in how to use an orchestra and choir to their best. Big Love Brother

When I made this request on Patreon I posted the very same thing you just did about The Trilogy. Great minds think alike. (are you my evil ... I mean my good twin?) That will be amazing when he does that. Everyone back us up on this here & on Patreon. Let's make this happen. In a world of most songs sounding basically the same with the same sound, structure & format, "The Death of Music" is truly one of a kind. There is no song that anyone can say "It kinda sounds like _______" about it. I do wholly agree with you, it should be coupled with "Funeral" & "Bastard" and it MUST be the RAH version. I know you are gonna know what I am talking about. There's that one shot of this guy in the audience just standing there with a stunned bunny look on his face like he just saw God riding a unicorn eating a pizza. That is what I expect Wolff is going to look like through most of that!

Saw Dev on the Transcendence tour and this is one the best tracks on that album. When he played this live I actually exploded, just became red mist...so when I saw it was on the PlovDiv show (which was already something I needed due to the whole of Ocean Machine being the second half) I was elated and it didn't disappoint. The addition of the choir and the orchestra just knocks it into the stratosphere. Yeah that line, "And you, broken, there's your legacy, it locks you in" something about the chord choices and those lyrics just breaks me every time. Then again wait till you get to Death of Music, that shit'll give you goosebumps for days :P One of the things I love about his writing is you never know what you're going to get, sometimes he writes around the music, matching syllables to melodies and what have you (Stuff like Bend it like Bender and some of the more esoteric stuff on Deconstruction) and other times he comes out with absolutely devastating lines like that. There is a line in Stars, just a single line, "...stay because you said you would" which looks like nothing out of context but how he crafts that around the melody (plus in the studio he gets Anneke to sing it which always adds extra emotion) is just heartbreaking. I look forward to seeing where you go next on your Dev journey. Perhaps delve into something soothing like Ghost or Ih-Ah...they both have incredible live performances. Or just go mad and do Genesis, I think that song covers every Genre he does AND the live version has Che singing alongside him (her in a fluffy dress, him in a Tutu). she's incredible, a smoother darker tone to Dev's belty barely contained chaos, and they work so well together. It's by no means a tough song to get into but it goes all over the place.

I've always been sceptical against "progressive" rock/metal cause a lot of times it just seems like they play all sorts of weird stuff just because they can, but this guy and his music and voice does smth to me. Whether he sings clean or screams, idk , i just feel it.

  • @DanTheSqueegeeMan

I agree with you, although I love „progressive“ rock and metal. The problem is that nowadays the word progressive is used for anything you can’t really easily label, anything that goes beyond the classic song structure. It doesn’t have to be totally chaotic flexing. There is a lot of so called progressive music that is very listenable, actually. Devin is definitely one example, but there are many more. If progressive music makes you feel stupid, cause you don’t get it, that’s the point I don’t like it anymore myself. Right on this channel you will find many very pleasant progressive artists, that put a lot of emotion into their music. So don’t be afraid of this label. It’s just what it is, a label. 😊

@@DanTheSqueegeeMan Yeah, i guess the term proggressive is often used very loosely. I'm a huge Nightwish fan and they often stray away from the typical verse-chorus-bridge-solo and goes into all sorts of other directions, and it's awesome. And same with a lot of metal when i think about it. Smth like early Metallica also has these kinda odd song structures here and there. I have no problem with that, as long as it doesn't get too weird and/or crazy technical. And yes, this channel is a goldmine for good music 😃

So as for Patreon, People have surrounded me to just support what we are doing here and to help grow this channel into something bigger than just reactions. For example, I'm doing interviews with artists and bands. So theres alot more content coming besides reactions. Hope that helps.
