When I met Devin and suggested he would be amazing at composing and producing a production, he told me unless he has total creative freedom he isn't willing to work with studio executives by saying "I don't do well with being told what to do." And we both laughed 🤣 It was so cool to talk to him, he's an awesome dude.

As others have said, anything from Devin's Plovdiv performance is pure platinum. Personally I'm a big fan of vocal harmonies, so I highly recommend any of the stuff he's done with Ché Aimee Dorval (especially their duo project, Casualties of Cool) or Anneke van Giersbergen. The Retinal Circus performance of Grace comes to mind immediately, as does Hyperdrive. There's enough energy in any of that to power a medium-sized city for a few days.

That first quarantine benefit for Vancouver hospital foundation was lots of fun and so timely! Very much a "greatest hits" set, and Devin in great form, shortly after early end of his tour.. I hope you check out some of his live performances, from the minimal productions you've seen so far, to some of the fullest ones he's had. Plovdiv show was probably the peak: Devin + band + orchestra + choir from a very cool venue. The one-two opener of Truth and Stormbending, their album neighbor Failure, or the huge-sounding Higher are all standouts!

One of the many fascinating and endearing things about Devin is that, despite the fact that he's primarily known as an extreme metal/progressive metal musician, he might do ANYTHING if he's inspired to. I saw on the news, Devin has been engaged to score a children's show in UK. Also, interesting fact about Devin, he has synesthesia, he sees sound as color. He has a few other quirks as well, but such an interesting and creative person. Funny thing, I saw him live at an outdoor music festival here in VA as lead singer for Strapping Young Lad, years ago, and all I could really recall was his hair, his 'skullet' as I have seen it called. Bald on top and lots of long hair all around. I discovered him as a solo act a couple of years ago. I highly recommend Deadhead from Royal Albert Hall and Stormbending...this music video is really amazing and it was so appropriate as I found it New Years' weekend 2018/2019. cheers!

I don't remember where I saw this, but I vaguely remember him mentioning that he had been asked to try out as Judas for a production of Jesus Christ Superstar at one point, but I don't think he enjoys being at the mercy of someone else's vision. He has been working on his own symphony called The Moth for a number of years, even getting training in orchestral arrangement. It's anyone's guess if/when it will be finished though. He's a really interesting character to watch in interviews if that's something you're interested in. He can be sensitive, funny, honest, self-deprecating, intellectual, grumpy, or inappropriate depending on his mood. Always interesting though.

You should check out Devin's "Singularity" from the album Empath. It's a 23 minute-plus composition in in six parts. He recorded the album with the usual rock and metal instrumentation, but also uses a full orchestra and choir. The entire album is genius, but for the sake of simplicity, I think "Singularity" is a good choice.

The part where he laughs and you comment about how good it is to see him amusing himself; On the album version of this, that gap is filled by Elliot Desgagnés of Beneath The Massacre doing a low death metal growl of "let me go home...". Dev admits he can't really do low growls. When performing the song live, he gets the audience to do it instead and he probably thought of the thousands of people watching the initial broadcast sat at home growling "let me go home" in the bedrooms etc and it made him laugh.

Devin Townsend has been an INCREDIBLE vocalist since the beginning of his career. Not just good. Incredible. He hid it a bit in SYL but if you can dig thru that catalog, you'll hear some vocals parts and harmonies that defy logic (especially for the time period). His solo stuff is full of vocal layers that are pure earcandy too.

I just drove past the Guinness brewery in Dublin 15 mins ago. If you can get your hands on it, you should try Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. Greetings from Ireland.

There's a version of this song you need to see, and not for the musical performance alone - Order of Magnitude dvd live version. And read the rescription :) It's... better than most comedies.

My dad had a vhs tape of Jeckyl and Hyde. Mainly because he loves "This is the Moment" so much. But the lead role was none other than the legend himself, David Hasselhoff.

@@Doug.Helvering agree. People should listen to Anthony Warlow. Head and shoulders above anyone else I’ve heard. While he was recently Daddy Warbucks on the Broadway revival of Annie, that doesn’t show him off at all.!Was also Enjorlas on the Les Mis symphonic recording in the early 90s. Also has a ‘Music of the Night’ from Phantom rendition on one his solo albums that has many on Phantom forums saying is the best. An awesome voice. Also ex Opera Australia.

Nice reaction again! Unfortunately for you, Devin doesn't drink no more, but I guess he would gladly appreciate a coffee instead! I suggest you check out "Deep Peace", "Pixilate" or "Ki" from Mr. Townsend!

I can't remember if you said you're from Colorado; but, if you are - and you love stouts - check out an Imperial Stout called Mephistopheles by Avery Brewing Co. It's 18% of stouty-goodness. Another great reaction video. Cheers! :)

Doug, you should really check out these kids doing a Tool cover of “46 & 2” ...it’s the O’keefe Music Foundation. As a composer, you will love the arrangement. As a musician, you love seeing these young kids crushing an epic song. Trust me, I’m an old guy and this video with 24M views brought a tear to my eye. You will love it, my friend. \m/

He is amazing, and it does sound Disney. But I love that he can do so many things, I do wish for my self if he would do a Disney movie but of course not all clean. He can play many characters with his voice.

if you've not yet, could you try Storm by Devin? it has a waltz feel and always reminded me of musicals my mother would listen to when i was young haha especially the intensity it climbs up to at the end, the notes he holds while changing from operatic to metal screams. i personally love it haha or the more popular Deadhead from the same album? and if you wanna get wild, try his old band Strapping Young Lad, alot heavier with mostly screaming, but the back and forth vocal and insane second verse of Shine is something to behold. CHEERS
