punt returning is far harders than kick returning if we are being honest. Yes you have to go a longer distance on kickoffs but punt returns often feature defenders right in your face as soon as you catch the ball.@@josephboehmer1245

He was the greatest, the Patrick Mahomes of kick returners. He was amazing and I can tell you did not see Hester the way bears fans did. We got to watch him terrorize other teams. But you know that, cognitive dissonance is a thing with the retarded.

I think the point being missed here is that teams would scheme for Hester every time they played the Bears and would quite often purposefully just kick the ball out of bounds rather than risk a big return. The Bears weren’t good so he doesn’t have the wins and rings but he single-handedly change the entire game plan of opposing teams just being on the field. And STILL ended up with the most returns of all time. Can you imagine his numbers if the opposing team actually kicked it to him every time? I know this has nothing to do with the HOF, but does no one else remember Hester in Madden being a cheat code basically? Sure, send your backup safety downfield at him. That’s BBQ chicken bro.

I at least kind of get it when a player has another, more highly valued job on the team that he's below average at, but kickers and punters don't have that. Their job IS special teams. By this logic, Aaron Donald shouldn't go in the hall of fame because he isnt logging offensive snaps. Patrick Mahomes shouldn't go in the hall of fame because he isn't logging defensive snaps. The "every down" argument falls apart when you hold it under scrutiny for like 5 seconds and I don't know why Barry is so committed to it outside of being terrified to admit he's wrong.

Being the all-time best at something warrants HOF status. He earned it. Just because special teams doesn’t have as much of an impact as offense or defense doesn’t mean it wasn’t deserved. Hester is an NFL legend and should be respected and awarded accordingly.

Why does it matter if we watched the Bears play or not? We know how many games they won during that time and like barry said, 55% isn't some incredible number. How many games did Hester actually flip from a loss to a win. Given that we're talking about 20 total return TDs in his entire career I would guess not that many. I’m glad there’s someone to say it. I was arguing with about 50 idiots last night. In order to believe any returner could ever be a hall of famer. You have to believe the delusion that return yards and touchdowns are worth 10x more than other yards in touchdowns. Because that’s the only way you can justify their lack of on field impact. A guy catches the ball off a kickoff instead of catching it/getting a handoff and suddenly it’s different. Hester has lowered the standards of the hall of fame. And that’s a shame. If Hester doesn’t return the kick in the SB he would be on par with Dante Hall, another guy who’s obviously not a hall of famer.

That is literally the argument you’re making if you’re on Hester’s side. That since it’s special teams it matters more. It doesn’t. Hester has stats comparable to Nelson Agholor 😂. But since it’s special teams I guess it’s more important. Offensive and defensive stars don’t play special teams because they’re too valuable to the team. They stick backups on special teams because they couldn’t give less of a fuck about them. And some stars start out on special teams (Tyreek Hill) but stop playing it when they become useful to offense or defense. If that doesn’t tell you special teams players are significantly less valuable then you might wanna check for brain damage.

Comparing a Punt returner (Hes known for that) to TEs, Wrs etc. Getting field position and winning position battles are a huge part of the game. There are players in the nfl that have eclipsed his entire career stats in 2 seasons think about that.

B Mitch was hands down the best return man of his era. Further, he was also a threat as the personal protector of the punter (his ability there actually was a huge contributor to several wins including at least 1 playoff win). He also was one of the better third down RBs and even started several games. He also was an emergency QB. Only Jerry Rice has more all purpose yards. Brian has the most punt return yards and the most kick return yards. Third in punt returns for TDs.

I get that 6 ooints is 6 points no matter how ttou get it so 20 TDs isnt that impressive from the perspective .. but the degree of difficulty to score return TDs is way higher than any other TD .. no team builds around Punt and Kick returners cause it's not expected that they'll score often

Guess you must hate every Kicker in the Hall since they don't play every down and they score only half a Touchdown when they Kick.

The second I saw Devin Hester got into the hall of fame, I knew you were going to be furious about it, and you did not disappoint. 😂

Part of the Hall of Fame is telling the story of football and not just how valuable the player was. We always use HoF as an accolade to measure how good a player is in debates that really don't matter at the end of the day. Hester making it in symbolizes the appreciation of a position that often goes underappreciated. Wouldn't be surprised if Matthew Slater eventually makes it in as the greatest special teams punt gunner of all time too.

In defense of the "value" of a return td over a regular td, is the level of difficulty plus the number of touches. A wr with 15 td in a season usually has tons of targets/receptions over a kr's number of returnable touches.

I completely disagree. Returning kicks and punts is the most dangerous of all NFL professions. The Hall of Fame actually needs to give more recognition to specialty players. Billy "White Shoes" Johnson should be inducted as well.

My biggest takeaway from this video is that Reggie Wayne and Antonio Gates aren't in the hall of fame.

It’s not just the touchdowns but the starting field position from either a simple 15/20 yard return or a team kicking it away, basically netting you an extra 10-15 yards closer to midfield. For every opposing punt you can add an extra 10-20 yards and call it receiving yards.

@@JJ-zr6fu Bears in 06 were tied with the Colts in points scored at 427. Compare and contrast the Colts and Bears player stats on offense. The average starting field position is how a dynamic offense scored as many points as a lackluster Bear offense netting 5.3 yards/play.

My issue with Hester is there were other guys who were excellent returners but were much more useful on offense. Did Hester really have a better career than Eric Metcalf when Metcalf had more scrimmage touchdowns than Hester had total touchdowns?

He started his career as a ProBowl returner,against the Seahawks when the Panthers offense couldn't score,they put in Smith,who returned a punt for a TD. Steve Smith and Tim Brown are the same type of player,Brown is in,Smitty will get in!!!

As far as touchdowns go, special teams TD’s, while worth the same amount of points, have a much greater impact on the game, especially morale wise. Nothing is more crippling than a huge special teams play, but bottom line they are worth the same amount of points

Does not matter, when crank that soldier boy came on, you knew what time it was, and everyone watched Devin to see what could happen and often did. You don't have to rationalize it, Devin was awesome and he put the fear of god in teams. He deserves the HOF without a doubt.

@@ajburrr Boselli was never "elite." He played LT while Leon Searcy protected Mark Brunelle's blind side as he was a left-handed QB. Searcy should have gotten the nod way before Boselli ever should've. And that's a foolish way to look at it thinking "Well, they've got to represent the Jags somehow." OK, then put Fred Taylor in there, a guy that could truly be argue as a HOF inductee from that Jags era.

@@Solo413 Boselli rarely had holding penalties and he didn’t allow much sacks in his NFL career. He had to face many great pass rushers as well. Boselli was a big contributor to help get Fred Taylor the most rushing tds of his career in a season. Fred Taylor put up good numbers, but his accolades don’t reflect it. He only had one second team all pro. Never was top 3 throughout his entire career. He is Hall of Very Good tho.

You know some other Hall of Famers who were great return guys? Gale Sayers, Deion Sanders, Herb Adderley, Steve Van Buren, and Rod Woodson. Guess what these guys had in common? They were all some of the best players to ever play their positions on defense or offense (in Van Buren's case)!!!

What’s funny is that Hester may be the only person from the 2006 draft class to get into the Hall of Fame. Only other one that may come close is Tamba Hali. Edit: or Haloti Ngata
