Here's the animatronic mouth mechanism I showcased in my recent video. In this video I talk briefly about the development of the mechanism, programming and artistic elements, and I'm going to be taking you through how to build one yourself!

Great job mate...you made reference to the TH sound and the position of the tongue....You said that the "TH" sound needs to position of the tongue to be at the front of the bottom teeth? But the TH sound comes from the tongue being raised and placed on the top front teeth? Love your work.....

I like what you're building! May I'll start working on printing out something like this. What did you make the tongue from? It is one of the flexible filaments, or did you pour out silicone into a casting mold? all it needs is bendability controlled by a motor so a wider array of phonemes can be produced... oh man, that would be really cool!

Neat project. If you're still interested in updating the software to be able to control it more easily, you could try using the SpeechRecognition Python library combined with Google's Speech-to-Text API to feed your original program inputs, potentially in real time, assuming you have a corpus of word-phonemelist pairs large enough to cover what all you're saying, such as the Carnegie Mellon University Pronouncing Dictionary.

  • @cdoebler

Great work. On the software side, I use the Mycroft AI, with its text-to-speech engines. They originally created visemes to output a series of 8 mouth shapes to match various sounds. These were sent to an arduino for display on a small screen in their Mark I AI enclosure. I pick off the visemes and pass them to an arduino connected to three simple servos in a Teddy Ruxpin. My mechanics aren’t as sophisticated as yours, but it should scale up. The real limitation would be that they only created 8 mouth shapes. Still, it might be worth looking into.

I think that maybe you should use your eye mechanism and mouth mechanism to make a face, and then make a Blender add on to turn the bone/armature animations to the animatronic animation. It won't work for anything live, but it could be made to look much better than anything automatic

How about some AI? AI is extremely good for interpretation from one sound to another. And it could predict future sounds and move accordingly. You could also write that in code too, just as an idea. If you say "open" and "pen" they have different motions even though they both end in "pen" the p is more exaggerated.
