Hot Damn! I'm coming across this almost 40 years later and still feeling like it's happening right now! I get so heated when I hear someone give mediocre musicians the credit of being "greatest of all time". You simply cannot say something like this until you can validate that their music, their sound, and their talent can still hold up 40 years later. These boys right here are giants! We are so lucky to have this portal to transport us back and witness such greatness.

Herbie burns it up. Santana/Hancock has always been a beautiful combination throughout the decades

On New Years Eve 1973, a group of friends from Fresno rolled up to San Francisco for a New Years concert. The line up? Malo, Herbie Hancock, Journey and Santana to close it out and ring in the New Year. What a memorable night. It was the year that the comet showed up around earth. Right before midnight, Bill Graham ran a fake lighted comet thru the rafters of the building to the roar of the crowd. A man in a diaper ran across the stage throwing champagne on the crowd. Bill Graham talked, in his usual manner, about Richard Nixon leaving the White House. Santana broke into Auld Lang Syne on this soaring guitar then rolled us all over with two hours of non-stop solid music after we had been hit by the sounds of the others. A memory to last a lifetime.

They quote the Jean Pierre theme from Miles Davis' album that had just come out that same year. Also, at 6:50 it's really nice to see how Santana takes it upon him self to make sure Herbie gets turned up louder and then you can see him telling the keyboardist to keep his playing quiet to not get in the way of Herbie's solo. Really shows the respect he has for the guests he brings on stage.

What memories! Woz sitting on stage behind the band, Bill Graham leaning on the amps behind Carlos listening to the show. 100+ degree weather, water cannons, outdoor showers, naked people everywhere, 150,000+ attendees, and NO FIGHTS!! Of the hundreds of events, concerts and show's I've coordinated and managed nothing will ever compare.

Smiling ear to ear as I read your comment. I was still a kid in 80s so my run going to shows started in early 90s and just from this cut you can tell this was quite an event. I'm very thankful to have been at Big Cypress down in the Everglades for Phish & NYE 1999/2000 & that was the highpoint & unfortunately I don't think we can match it anymore. It was pre social media, pre 9/11 & on 1/1/2000 when we were walking out of the venue at 7 am w/Here Comes Sunshine playing on the PA, I remember thinking that's gotta be how Woodstock felt in the 60s. That whole experience was probably the very best time of my life. Anyway, thanks for your comment and God Bless

I love Carlos but even I'm smart enough to realize Hendrix is hard to beat on the electric guitar. Hendrix's ideas, imagination, sound creations and musicality/composing is next level over Carlos.

@@RayyMusik I was just joking. Felt sorry for him because he was facing away from the rest of the band and he kept on having to look over his shoulder to get the vibe off the rest of the band. Probably not a big deal to him because top musicians can adapt to any situation.

Believe it or not, back in the late 6os, very early 70s, PBS (as we called it channel 13 where I lived) would fill in stuff between shows. I remember VERY CLEARLY watching a live performance of Santana performing this song, incident at neshiber (sp? Lol). I was with my mother and my baby brother in the high chair being fed by my mother. Sorry for the long details! Soo vivid in my memory, I couldn’t resist!! I'll see my mom next week. Can't wait to share! Lollol hahaha!!

With Carlos is where i first heard Herbie.....most talent that ever touched them ivories

Same here, which was when The Headhunters opened up for Santana on New Years Eve of 1973.

That's a matter of taste. Some say the original line-up was the best, some the 71 band with Neal Schon, others the Jazz period. For me the best was the 1987 Freedom one, but Carlos has never played with average musicians. As a master he is, he always brought the best to his circle.

Can't agree with best lineup ever, I've got a soft spot for the 72-75 band, and his present group, of master musicians are the best then world has to offer,But these guys had muscular chops and they obviously adored playing behind Carlos and feeling the love every night. My oldest son was conceived on the very night of this show, at the Greek theater in Berkeley. Thanks for whoever dug this up!

Those Yamahas ruled. Just heavy as heck. I think his best tone was with the Yamahas and the Les Pauls. I'm hearing too much gain presently.

I''ve always been amazed how Santana found a Michael Shrieve clone in Graham Lear.....in appearance anyway. Michael has always been my favorite Santana drummer.

Juan: Santana was a follower in the 60's of an Indian spiritualist guru who gave him the name Devadip (light of god). Santana's wife was given the middle name 'Urmila'.

+Ros Pillai He became a follower in 1972, introduced by John McLaughlin, and received the name Devadip in 1973. He left the name and the religion in 1982 when Deborah told him the guru forced her to abort their very first child back in 1976. If you look how his hair is longer here, I think Devadip was already gone.

Then check out Carlos, he first looks over to Herbie and shakes his head to Herbie; 'keep on going".....then check out Carlos look over to his band to take up the rhythm as Herbie then continues to solo into heaven. Then it becomes God like... Santana ruled then..

Devadip was the spiritual name he was given by a guru named Sri Chinmoy. He and Mahavishnu John McLaughlin were once disciples back in the mid to late 70's

Correct ! A Yamaha 175 SG, a special prototype made only for Carlos. She’s called the buddah and she’s unique ! It would made the SG 2000 and 3000 based on the 175 SG wich is still 2x more expensive. But according to the Japanese luthier who made the buddah for Carlos, the buddah is not a commun SG175 : she has 24 frets, more piece of wood and a nickel plate under the pickups and the bridge to add sustain. And at least, THE secret of this guitar : the coils ! Also especially made for the buddah cos , as for the SG2000 and 3000, the thick body make a too loud sound with classic neck humbuckers. So Carlos guitar Tec wired the coils to fit the guitar and create THE real sound of Carlos between 1976-88 I owned a SG3000 in 1981 and searched almost 40 years until I found some guys who were involved in this process. I also have a Mesa Boogie Mark III but the real dream is when I could obtain a real replica of those coil which are not sold. And when on from there !

It is and you should also listen to the 1973 album by Carlos Santana & John McLaughlin "Love, Devotion, Surrender" which is an homage to John Coltrane including 2 of his major compositions: A Love Suprme and Naima. A fantastic album for any jazz guitar lover!

at 1;:26 you see the back of the headstock and it is the yamaha. must of had a problem with the PRS ??? yes the yamaha sounds much nicer in my opinion and yes they were heavy.

JD Dixon Carlos has always played this section of this song on his yam cos the sustain is unique and necessary for the solo even when he began to endorse PRS... But in 1987 his Tec took off the unique SG’S hambucker and put them on nasty PRS...
