Dev Diary 17 - Map Rework Update and Making the Map

Ойындар

Salutations! The goal of this Dev Diary is to discuss considerations we make when designing the map and to update you on the major map rework underway!
In this Dev Diary, Marc will lead you through a few examples that highlight general design considerations we make when creating provinces. Then, you will meet two of Gilded Destiny's content designers! Basten will discuss the importance of consulting historical sources and various aspects of placing cities and creating countries. Josh will then discuss the methodology of placing terrain features. Finally, Marc will discuss the major map rework, including performance optimizations and will highlight several aesthetic and game mechanics improvements planned.

I really think your missing out on Native Americans. As a native I'd like to be represented in the game and play as tribes. During this time while the US and Mexico claimed land, there were huge swaths that not a single person other then native tribes inhabited, those areas were fiercely defended and protected by natives, it was entirely within their governing power regardless of what the big empires claimed was there's.

One thing to comment on is the year that Brazil's year of independence literally began, it would be interesting to see what the events would be like if it were to occur , like the Dia do Fico 9 January, when Pedro I decided to stay in Brazil and independence on September 7th. Future events such as the Prata war over Cisplatin and the occupation of Bolivia.

What matters the most to me personally is granular populations. I wanna see the breakdown of each province, each city in that province if possible, see the exact numbers and figures. That's why I'm such a big Vic2 fan. The diplomacy and population need to be top notch! Warfare too of course, but it's extremely easy to make at least decent warfare. Right Victoria 3...?

As Belgian I have to say I feel there is some improvement work to be done on the Low Countries. First of: The North Wallonia state as depicted currently seems to include the eastern areas of Eupen-Malmedy, which we call the eastern cantons. Those aren’t a part of what later would be Belgium until after the First World War. As of the date of the game those couple of tiles should ideally be added to the western Rhineland state. Secondly the Guelderland state should ideally have a small strip of land between the Flanders state and the west Rhineland state to depict the city of Maastricht. The city would become part of the Netherlands officially after the Belgian independence of 1830 (technically the newly independent Belgium controlled it somewhat until the official ten points agreement of London in 1839 that settled Belgian independence definitively). Thirdly the border between the Flanders and Netherlands state could be given some love rather than be made a straight line. You could add some sea tiles to simulate Sealand and the Schelde estuary, since in this configuration Antwerp would be a landlocked city. This small change could visually improve the shape of the later Dutch-Belgian border (especially should the Belgian revolution be modelled as an ingame event or disaster for the United Kingdom of the Netherlands). Fourthly on a similar note to point three you make some alterations to the sea border of the Netherlands state, since it is such a straight line currently, it takes away from the aesthetic of the Low Countries region. On a fifth note you should enlarge the Ijselmeer in the north of the Netherlands, since currently it looks like Flevoland exists already, even though its artificial creation was a project on which the Netherlands worked for the better part of the twentieth century. Additionally a larger Ijselmeer would benefit the aesthetic look of the Low Countries superregion.

Suggestion: more borders along rivers. I think it's universal for grandstrategy fans to like clean borders, and borders that ignore rivers are some of the most annoying offenders of those so called "clean borders" Especially if it's not a historical province border and something u just made up, i think it absolutely must obey the river border if it comes close to one.

Not an easy thing to do, considering the borders we've had and have now. The only way to get perfect borders, is to have a modular system of tiny microscopic pieces that you can interact with to create the exact perfect border you'd want on the fly. But that would not be an easy thing to do. Not an easy thing to make, and not an easy thing to play with.

Sweden and Norway being joined seems wrong. Norway had its own economy, army, and a different political system of constitutional monarchy specifically to ensure the having to accept the Swedish king, didn't mean he had any power there.

  • @Hugebull

That is probably up to how the "Subject" system is going to work in the game, as well as some other details. Scotland is in a union under England, and the United States is a Union of a bunch of States. Norway having its own economy is technically true, as every region on the planet have their own economy. Yes, Norway had the Constitution that limited the power of the Swedish King over Norway. But Norway did not have a foreign policy, that was run by Sweden. First we need to know more about subject types and how that's going to work.

I've stumbled here and I'd just like to give some friendly criticism. I've played "map painting" games for a long while now and I feel like you're a bit too hung up on actual history with your map. A game is never going to play out the way real history did. And if it does you've railroaded the player into it and they likely aren't going to like it. Rather than modeling your provinces around stages of historical events I feel you'd be better off just building them around the geography of the map. Make the boundaries follow rivers and mountains. Make sure that when a player takes the whole province, as the game will probably lean them towards doing, above all else the boarder looks and feels good. Like it's something you could actually imagine seeing on a world map. And for gods sake, don't give them a map mode that lets them see what parts of a province they don't own, or else they'll feel the boarder they've created isn't "the right" boarder.

@@benismann I understand that some province boarders will need to be in certain places to facilitate the start date. What I'm referring to are the many places, for example within Canada, where the provinces are broken up into sections based on their historical dates of ending up in The Dominion of Canada (I believe). During the game when, not if, a number of these provinces end up in the hands of someone that isn't Great Britain or Canada it's going to make for some very displeasing boarders. This can even be applied to US states. Break them up into smaller bits that follow the geography, but as a whole follow the outline of the state. All said the game looks very interesting and well put together so far.

There was this little skirmish involving Napoleon, some tiny little European thing, anyways. As a result of that little disagreement, we got something called the "United Kingdom of the Netherlands" in 1815. The game Gilded Destiny starts in 1822. The Belgian Revolution took place in 1830-1831. Resulting in the independent Kingdom of Belgium. We are also going to see a united Gran Columbia at the start of the game. The war of 1812 between the United States and the British Empire ended only 7 years ago at the start of the game. Napoleon Bonaparte has only been dead for 8 months. Princess Victoria is not even 3 years old. Norway wrote their Constitution only 8 years ago. India is still under "Company Rule", and is over 30 years away from being Nationalized by the British Government. The "Upper Canada Rebellion" is still 15 years away. So, the American player should really have the ability to fiddle with the future reality of Canada. The Irish-Catholic migration to the United States is at its infancy. So, barring the gates to Catholics could become a thing, altering the foundation of the United States in the following generations. Overall, the decision to start the game in 1822 changes a lot of things compared to Victoria's start date of 1836. A lot of foundational things can very quickly become very different.

Also, another suggestion, perhaps instead of using the word "Uncolonized" to represent tribal peoples, use the word "Uncivilized". Uncolonized implies nobody lives there which could be interpreted as misleading and unfair for the peoples living there by pretending that those settlers where just settling in uninhabitated land, erasing the abuses of colonialism. Uncivilized implies that people live there but in form of tribes and nomads which is in my opinion more fair and historically accurate. I understand that Uncolonized has a game mechanic reason, so the playes knows that that land is "Colonizable" by the developed nations. So it makes sense from the gameplay perspective. Also Uncivilized could sound racist or demeaning for some people that understand the word as "primitive" instead of "no cities or centralized government" (the actual meaning of the word). Maybe there could be a third word? My point is that the word Uncolonized could be improved to be more historically accurate. Just so you think about it. I understand the reasoning behind "Uncolonized".

They resisted for 400 years colonization to just being taged as "uncolonized". This is not 2005 when only eurocentric states exist.
