Deus Ex Dark Age Ending

Ойындар

After being convinced by Tracer Tong, JC Denton proceeds to trigger a new Dark Age. This is one of the possible endings of Deus Ex, the one which resembles the movie "Escape from LA" in which the technology is destroyed in a similar way. Welcome to the human race!

    Tong explains his reasoning somewhat. Rather than destroying technology completely, he wants it to become less centralized, less connected, and more localized. Destroying the very thing that connects all of it is the only way to accomplish that.

    The core problems being nothing is stopping someone else from coming along and setting up the same thing, and the massive chaos that this destruction of centralization will cause. Meaning things will definitely get much worse in the short term, and then very likely end up exactly how they were before, if not worse

    @@gig_gaming The technology was built before the generators. Over time everything was centralized. But even if the generators were needed first, there is nothing to stop the government or a corporation from building new ones. Unless everyone in every government and private sector in Deus Ex time is utterly incompetent, there are blueprints, schematics, and individuals with the knowledge to rebuild. @Lone Star Librarian is right. This ending will just bring unnecessary chaos and destruction in the short term, and everything then returns back to normal within a few months, if not quicker.

    Even though this ending probably wouldn't work in real life because people would soon just rebuild their technology-based infrastructure, I still like this ending the best just because it feels like the most climactic and cathartic way to end the game Technological advance gone haywire screwed the world, and you get to drop the nuke on its epicenter. The music here is powerful as hell too.

    +HawaiiKnut The Area 51 generators were built from alien technology obtained from the Greys, it's very probable that MJ12 scientists weren't able to connect Helios to the generator control interface. After all, this isn't that dreadful Independence Day movie where a human scientist dude is able to program a computer virus in a matter of hours _and upload said virus into the central computer in the huge alien spaceship_, disabling the shields on all the alien craft and allowing the humans to win the battle. Man what a lucky coincidence that the computers of a alien spaceship from far beyond our solar system are compatible with computer interfaces and programming languages developed on Earth.

  • @sd501st5

    @sd501st5

    Not a coincidence at all. The Alien Fighter in Independence Day's Area 51 is the "UFO" that crashed at Roswell in 1947. Now take a wild guess on what a lot of the advanced technology developed in the 50 years between then and 1996 - when the movie takes place - was based. Including computers and programming languages. ;) Hint: The Aliens had no problem at all interfacing their technology with ours when they used our satelite network to carry the signal that coordinated their movements... the signal which the "human scientist dude" discovered.

  • @supremacistdawn

    @supremacistdawn

    Marcel Ebert Sorry, I don't buy that. It's explicitly stated in the movie that the scientists were unable to learn much from the alien fighter craft recovered from the Roswell crash, since it had been sitting inactive for decades and only activated when the alien mothership approached Earth. How can you figure out how to establish a compatible protocol with a computer system you can't even access? It's like trying to access a computer with its power turned off, you can type on the keyboard all you want but don't expect any results to come from it.

    TBH, I have a harder time understanding the relevance of the quote given in this ending than with the other ones; it's not like destroying the network would guarantee permanent anarchy or anything. Must have only been the obvious potential controversy that stopped them from finishing it with "The industrial revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race." because that seems to fit much better and also provides some ominous implications to go along with Tracer Tong's idealism, which fits with the style of the quotes in the other endings. Especially since Kaczynski had only been caught a few years before the game was released, so there's almost no way they weren't thinking of him when planning this ending.

    I like this ending the best, but I feel it wasn't executed that well. Of course as everyone else points out, the net would come back very soon. The centralization of the net happened very recently in universe, so it would just go back to the old system, probably returning to a state of internet anarchy like in its heyday, so Tong's vision of a village based society(kek) isn't gonna happen. However, it would still mean that the illuminati would have far less control, information, and influence, which means politics would in turn become more local, states would have more power while federal government would be less powerful, and information far more free. Overall I think this is a good change, and could lead to a minarchist revolution. Destroying the power grid ain't so hot but hey, getting the power back online wouldn't take too long, and there should still be backup generators up and running across the country.

    I ultimately agree with it, mostly because it works better (in my opinion) with IRL history taken into account. Even with how good JC is, he is still a man, and he still likely has his biases as a man, even as a god. The Illuminati is even worse, as the only thing that changed between the majestic 12 and the ending is who’s foot is in the boot upon mankind’s face, and without any means of recourse upon it’s trampling, and it will likely make the situation occur again.

    While I like this ending and the Helios ending equally, I think the people who say Helios will solve all the world's problems and would be literally perfect are somewhat naive. They don't understand that systems are just as flawed as the people who make them. Helios would mess up someway sooner or later. It is impossible for anyone or anything to be perfect, but perhaps Helios would allow it to be as close to perfect as possible. Though Tong's idea of decentralization (government on a scale comprehensible to its citizens, genuine self rule to a degree) is also very appealing to me. Edit: Ten months later and my opinion has changed drastically in favor of Tong.

    After lots of thinking on my second playthrough I decided that merging with helios was probably the best choice. But I couldn't resist going back to my last save and choosing this ending - The helios ending doesn't feel right, it's sinister and morally ambiguous - and while all the endings are, there's something very heroic about destroying the tyranny that has been plaguing the world right at the source, then running away with the epic ending music. It really captures humanity's desire for freedom and unkillable hope. And the ending quote sums this up perfectly. Even JC, part machine, born and raised only to serve tyrants, refuses to bend to their will, and ironically, the fact that his humanity is greater than theirs is their downfall. 'Yesterday we obeyed kings and bent our necks before emperors, but today we kneel only to the truth.' - Kahlil Gibran

    This ending is strikingly similar to the ending of John Carpenter's Escape from L.A. where our "hero" Snake also decides to pull the plug on the planet, the only difference being that Snake's decision was the most rational choice he could've made under the circumstances -- because the 2 factions he had to choose from were equally evil, corrupt and detrimental to the world and he held both of them in utter contempt -- whereas Tong's decision is patently insane as there was absolutely no need to plunge the world into darkness. JC could've simply killed Bob without blowing Area 51 or just merge with Helios and take over himself. Ironically, if you look up L.A's ending, the comments are filled with near-unanimous support of Snake's decision whereas Tong's ending has quite the number of detractors criticizing it for very understandable reasons. Funny how simple context can change the outcome of 2 nigh-identical endings.

    If Paul Denton is alive, the aforementioned role of Dr. Savage goes to Paul and it's Paul who says those lines. Paul has always been JC's good brother and even in the end, where everything depends on JC, he want's JC to choose by remaining neutral. I believe Savage was just a quick substitute made up by the developers once they realized they had to reflect changes at the end if player fails to save Paul, and thus the inconsistency.

    The problem with this ending is that we would likely make the same mistakes all over again. I felt that way about both this one and the Illuminati ending, that they would both cycle back into the same problems. You can't just start over and hope things will change, because they probably won't. The best thing to do is make things better (or at least try to) by attempting something different. I am sure all three endings were purposefully made to be not especially desirable.

    I'd say it's the worst, Tracer Tong is an idealist but is woefully naive, he thinks this will free the people but it will just make them more oppressed. History shows you don't need the internet for powerful figures (kings, prime ministers etc) to oppress their citizens. The illuminati operated long before the internet or even phones were a thing, I don't see how destroying these things will take power away from them, they'll just revert back to what they used to do. The illuminati will just change tactic and form local governments to control and communicate the old fashioned way with secret meetings (it's not like cars, trains etc have been destroyed so it's not too hard to arrange a meeting by post and then have everyone travel there). If anything the internet hinders the illuminati, corruption is exposed on the internet all the time and everyone knows about it, back in the dark ages (which Tong wants) if someone found out about some corruption he couldn't do much about it since there was no way of letting the public know, he might be able to tell a few people but the illuminati would quickly cotton on and take care of it.

    i have a crackpot take on this ending while taking a shit, looking at this from a gamer point of view this is cathartic because while this is illogical IRL, the fact that you can just take the nuclear option because of technological advancement has gone haywire practically saying "ENOUGH!" and decide to just reset everything (to a degree). A comparison to my gaming experience is when playing Soul Hackers. I play SMT3 with magic build so i naively expect that the MC in SH can use magic, only to realize it far too late in the middle point of the game and it's too far gone and no such thing as respec, so i delete the data and reset everything from scratch with knowledge of the previous attempt Just like JC destroying the epicenter of technological advancement, we rebuild with knowledge of old.
