You raise an interesting argument about the impact of coaching. I actually think it can make a big difference, but it's really hard to quantify. I've heard other fans argue re who would have done a significantly better job with this roster? They're the same ones ready to quit on the young talent like Ivey and duren. I'd be keen to get a strong coach in and give these youngsters one more year in a well balanced system supplemented by decent NBA role players, perhaps a low level star player they may be lucky enough to pick up. Essentially this would finally give us clean data to assess the potential of these youngsters.

I agree the Pistons need to be better, but it is very unlikely that exist a clear way for being REALLY better. I can see, depending on who will be the new president of basketball ops, they trying to erase so many of Troy Weaver's mistakes by making some sparkling decisions this offseason. Giving a lot of money for Tobias and Klay will for sure make the team better for the next season, but in exchange will compromise a big part of the future. To me, the ideal scenario is trying to bring free agents that fit in the timeline of Cade without paying an absurd amount of money. Toppin is a good name. Monk will be too expensive. Melton is young and a good 3 point shooter and point of attack defender, probably not very expensive too. Hartenstein will probably need more than 20mil to trande NY for Detroit, so I don't know if it's the best idea. Bitadze is a solid center that would cost way less.

For the Pistons off-season they just need any kind of direction. If the front office actually cares about going into a direction that includes the team playing meaningful games in March & April next season, then the first move should be firing Monty. The new Head Of Basketball Operations that'll be hired (Looks like it'll be Jon Horst), needs to brutal with his moves. I'm sure Monty is a good coach, but imo he's not the coach suited for the specific Pistons roster. Monty always seemed like a money hire, more than a hire that can build something special for a number of seasons with this young core. I think candidates like Kenny Atkinson, Charles Lee & Chris Quinn are the kinds of coaches that would fit what I'm saying. Next would be what to do with some of the team-options/non-guarantees that are on the roster. Waiving Evan Fournier's $19M team-option might be the easiest decision to be made. Then there's Troy Brown Jr who is non-guaranteed for $4M, I can see them possibly keeping him on the roster as a cheap rotation wing. However if it was up to me, I'm waiving him as well, as Troy didn't show me enough to warrant staying on the team. There's also Metu & Umude who both have club options, and I personally would keep Umude but waive Metu. Umude showed me this past season, that he'll fight for his minutes and that stuck with me. He's also scheduled to make only $2.1M next season, so keeping him would be cheap. Then there's the million dollar question, Should some of the young core be traded? I am talking about Ivey, Ausar, or Duren, not Cade who is the focal point and the face of the franchise. Part of me wants a new coach that excels in developing and creating relationships with players to have a chance in doing that with the young core. I completely get it if any Pistons fans want to see Duren or Ivey being traded, and if Monty is still the HC then I am 100% on board with that. Him playing Killian Hayes over Ivey for most of the first half of this past season, is still something that I haven't gotten over. Now it's free agency time, where the Pistons HAVE to do well in. For me they should follow the Rockets blueprint in how they approach free agency. Sign vets that can contribute to winning basketball, come in and change the culture, and provide as a mentor to these young players. I'll just get this out of the way, re-signing Fonteccio should be of high importance, and something of a 3 yr; $45M contract ($15M AAV) would probably get it done. Now it's time to spend this cap space, and I would begin with getting a true defensive big that'll push Duren. For me that player is Hartenstein, who has deserved this payday he's going to get. He's been a vital part of the success that the Knicks have had this season/playoffs. I think a 4 yr; $72M offer ($18M AAV) might do it. Next this might be a pipe dream, but KCP would be my next target. There is no reason for KCP to leave the Nuggets, but he has a player-option that he might decline. If he does do that, then I would tempt him with big money for a low number of years. A 2 yr; $40M offer ($20M AAV), would allow him to go back in free agency one more time to get a good enough contract. Once again this is mostly a pipe dream, but he was drafted by the Pistons, maybe he would want to return for a better role. Then there's everybody's favorite target, Tobias Harris. Look I am just straight up going to say that he's going to be playing for the Pistons come next season. There's just too much smoke for there not to be fire, so for me all it comes down to is what kind of contract will he get. In no world should he be getting $30M a year on his next contract, but if he agrees to something like 3 yr; $75M ($25M AAV) with the third year being a team-option then I'm all for it. Maybe I could be talked into a 4 yr; $100M deal with the 4th year being a team option, but I would feel a lot more comfortable with the first scenario. Onto the draft where it's also of great importance that they get this pick right. If this pick stays at one, then I can really only see three options, Sarr, Risacher, or Buzelis. I have been on record saying that I believe Matas is going to rise up big boards with his individual workouts. There's also the fact that his agent Michael Tellem, is the son of Pistons vice chairman Arm Tellem. This draft is just not one that I like that much, and because I feel this way there's no real consensus number one player imo. I think I still am going to lean towards Risacher with this pick, because of his floor spacing and he's young enough where I feel like his offensive game will get better with more experience. So imo this would be my ideal off-season for Detroit: 1. Fire Monty Williams and hire Kenny Atkinson 2. Waive Fournier, Brown Jr & Metu (Keep Umude) 3. Re-Sign Fonteccio 4. Sign Tobias (On a friendly contract), Hartenstein & KCP (More of a pipe-dream) 5. Draft Risacher at #1 PG: Cade/Ivey/Sasser SG: KCP/Ausar/Grimes SF: Fonteccio/Risacher/Umude PF: Tobias/Stewart C: Hartenstein/Duren

The only thing Duren has been better at is FT shooting. That does matter but unless he vastly improves from three or suddenly becomes an elite defender he isn't better than Drum.
