Detroit 4-53T 425 Mile Shakedown Trip

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Basically the last test for my 4-53T is a 425 miles mountain hwy trip through BC's interior and coastal mountains. Engine performed really well with oil temps down 15 (210 vs 225) degrees from the previous trip. Fuel economy increased to 17.5 mpg, another 1 mpg increase. Engine is slowly breaking in and running better than ever. Happy Detroit.:)

I wanted to do this for many years . Love that 4-53tt A guy a town over from me stuck a 4-53 in a Ford ranger beleve or not he did a wicked job and was able to squeeze 35mpg out of her. Edit and a new Ford 150 transmission with a programmer for shift points, from what I gather is the way he gets that mpg along with a 240 something rear gear. But I'm not sure how important that is.

Very interesting to see this done in a modern vehicle. My papa Joe built a 1978 Dodge W200 Crew cab with a 4-53 5 speed over a 3 speed brownie. He swapped the body on to the frame of some other truck with an Eaton 2 speed rear end so it had all the gears. Also he welded the front fender to the hood and grill, then hinged it all with a counter weight so the hood flips forward like a semi...and it had stack like little red express lmao. He did all that in the 80s and passed when I was 2, the truck is mine now...and I have no clue what to do with it. I have pics of all of this lol.

When I got the truck off his property trees had grown through the handles. The roof line around the rain drip rails are rusted out, the front seat collapsed into back seat since the floor is rusted out. It's almost a total goner. It could make a decent rat rod, who knows at this point.

I once pulled in to a fuel station in the early evening, right after a woman in an suv pulled up and took the combination gas/diesel pump. The only other was out of order and the rest was gas only. Pulled back in behind her with the diesel idling. She looks at me a couple times likes “what’s this asshole doing”? There are 17 open gas pumps, 1 suv in the gas station using a single solitary pump and the only other vehicle is waiting behind her. Keeps looking at me periodically while I just sit there looking at all the open gas pumps. Then a duramax pulls up, sees the out of order pump, circles around and queues up right behind me. 2 diesel pickups sitting there idling behind her while she’s the ONLY person fueling at this empty gas station. She looks real confused now somewhat uncomfortable, definitely uncomprehending. As she was leaving a 3rd diesel pulls up and does the same thing. Basically he was pulling in the back of the line after circling as she was finishing up. She looked so confused though and add to that the 3 of us were in total understanding and chuckling about the situation to ourselves. I snapped a photo that captured my position in line with my rear view showing the line of diesels; through my driver window you can see 17 open pumps and windshield her suv at the sole occupied pump. I really don’t think most people are that aware of their surroundings. I bet she still doesn’t know what happened.

Story of my life. Sunoco by me has 16 pumps. Only 2 are diesel combo pumps, but each side has it so there are 4 diesel nozzles. Every time I pull in for fuel, there’s 4 gassers all at the diesel pumps. I used to get so f***in mad but then I thought, “they probably don’t even realize.”

DetroitGarage, almost every single f$&@$&@ time I go to get dsl for my 93 idi, & 2 cans for my dsl garden tractors there’s a f$&@$&@ gasser in dsl nozzle pumps. I used to get dsl during the day, but stopped cuz it’s cooler out, & you get more cuz the fuel is thicker/cooler temp. Anyone that has a dsl pickup needs to get a bed 50 gall tank cuz then you can go a while before filling up. In the end, people need to be aware of the fact that the dsl truck pumps need to be clear for us cuz there’s not as much of em as gasser nozzles. There’s were times where I almost got in someone’s face, & chewed em out. I once smoked this bitch out once that was in a dsl pump as I was leaving. Of course she probably to this day doesn’t know what it was for.

Nice idea swapping such an old motor in a modern Ford Pickup😁. I think if I had any modern pickup I dont think Id put work into it. I rather buy an old Ford, Chevy or Dodge Pickup than fixing a modern one. But I can understand not everyone wants an old vehicle like me. But I believe the old 7.3 powerstrokes from Ford are much better than for example the newer 6.0 powerstrokes. Its Personal preference. And its important to respect everyones choice of Car brand people go with

This conversion is awesome, cool to see a swap like this on a newer pickup. How do you find the power of the 4-53t? Is it comparable to the (I assume 6.4) engine that it replaced? I’ve heard these Detroit’s don’t like being lugged. Thanks

Thanks, the 4-53T is tuned at the moment to about 210 HP and 450 FTLBS of torque. The plan is to slowly increase this to 250-270 HP and 525 fTLBS of torque. The Power is a lot less than the 6.4 of 350HP and 650 Torque. I don’t miss the power and am much happier with the Detroit. I run this engine around 1800-2200 rpm and will pull down to 1600 before shifting. Max torque is rated at 1500 rpm, so it’s still happy at 1600.:). Thanks for watching.

Just curious, I didnt see the build or any of your other videos. Somehow I just stumbled across this one but how come you didnt go with a 6v? It should fit I would think..? I cant imagine its all that much bigger than the v10? My work truck has the v10. I'm not a ford guy at all, 100% GM family but I'm pretty happy with this truck. I've had it since brand new. I have a hackney 18 foot insulated aluminum body with 4 side doors and 1 rear. But its tall, sticks up a good 3.5 feet above the cab and I'm generally around 15k lbs so..back roads it does a real good job on hills. I can usually pluck off a few ass draggers in the truck lanes. On the interstate I run it at 80 because its right at peak power when I need it for a running start on the big hills because of the drag of all that box above the cab. You really notice it at those speeds but even though I'm wide open throttle, it generally hangs in high gear pulling those hills unless its a real steep long one and when it shifts down at 77 once I'm back up to 83-84 I back off to make it shift and stand back in it but its the 16 with the 5 speed. It needs a spoiler of some sort but I havent found one. Hopfully have my boss talked into a new duramax for my next one. If not a GM then a diesel ford at the very least. Give that a try.

I chose this engine because it’s what I had. The 6v53 is almost twice the size of the v10 and weighs in at 1900 lbs. It could be made to fit, but even more work than what it took me to fit the 4-53T. I’ll slowly improve the power output to about 300 HP and about 650 ftlbs of torque. I really enjoy it and glad I swapped this in. Thanks for watching.:)

O.O I just stumbled upon this... how in the holy fuck did you get that thing to run without throwing a fit constantly and with the trans working right?! That is amazing... wonder what kind of mileage it gets. I've been wanting to build a regular old pickup with a 8V71 in it because I figured if they old semis with it got 10mpg, something maybe 1/5th the weight or less should at least get high teens if not 20's while still sounding cool. That's the thing I love the most about the old Detroit 2 strokes is the sound and just the amazing engineering. I remember being up at my grandparents as a kid in the 90's and hearing the logging trucks coming 10 minutes before they got there and 10 minutes after they left as they went up the hill or back down it. Those engines are one of the coolest pieces of engineering ever.. and they were surprisingly good on fuel and emissions.. I still think it wasn't smog emissions that killed them but the noise emissions. I just subscribed, this is too interesting for my autistic mind to pass up. Oh and one piece of advice, try mounting your camera to the stick of your rear view mirror, it's what I did in my Bronco I had with a little piece of bent sheet metal and a brake like holder clamp and it worked great... so long as I remembered to have the steady shot on and stayed off of super bumpy gravel roads.
