I love just how gentle newfies are. What an amazing dog breed! Almost any other kind of dog would've barked and tried to eat them.

There's no other dog like a Newfoundland! We got our Newfoundland mix when he was about a year old and the family we got him from said that the feral cats in the neighborhood wouldn't let anyone near them, but the kittens would sleep on his paws. His brother was hit by a car and killed while trying to rescue a cat that had gotten hit. They're amazing!!

He looks SO much like my Bayleigh. I lost her to bloat at 8 years old.She did the same as your Dethan to a nest of baby birds that was blown out of a tree, but her shining moment was being a babysitter/ adoptive mom to a litter of kittens. Even the real mom didn't take as good care of them as she did. It's been almost 5 years now since she's been gone.and I miss her every day.I'll never have another breed of dog. Newfies only for this family

That's a strange place for a bunny to have her nest. Newfies are the best dogs IN THE WORLD!!!

Awww... Dethan is sooo sweet! "Look at the babies and then cover them up." :-) I see this in my backyard all the time. We have a brush pile with raspberry cane in it, as well as wild strawberry plants, so we have rabbit families living there. Before we mow in the spring, we walk the yard to look for nests like this because sometimes the mothers are not all that smart about where they have their babies. I'll bet they're bouncing around the yard now, with Dethan keeping an eye on them! :-)

I had a Great Dane/ Newfie cross growing up and she did the same thing with any kind of infant, whether it be kittens or a child, she would just sit and watch intently.

Dethan is such an adorable big pile of love plus the 'sad' eyes

I had a Newfie who decided to adopt a baby bird that the mother was trying to teach how to fly. He carried the bird to his dish and they never separated. Dukey also liked to try to "adopt" frogs too.

Thank you for sharing this and all of your videos of Dethan. We lost our Chevy male Newfie just one week after you posted this video. Although today was our first view of this and all of your video's of your wonderful Newfie. Our Chevy could have been Dethan's bro except Chevy wasn't a Landseer. Your videos have brought tears of joy and happiness brining our thoughts to our old friend. We just wanted to say thanks as although I have ton's of pictures we have no videos. Funny my wife got me a Bernese Mountain dog a few months later He was born on June 6th 2014 the very day you posted this video..I hope you catch this comment

My GSD , Bear (& Saber) were just as sweet & gentle to the 2 hamsters we had & the kittens. This is a charming video. Love that head on the Newf. The lovely expression in the black face (even tho’ at times it’s hard to seethe brown eyes!).. gads, this is such an endearing moment.

Dethan has experienced more wonders of nature than i have.

What a sweet dog! Any of my 4 dogs (different breed each) would have unfortunately destroyed the bunnies.

Love Dethan! My husky might revert to her huntress ways - like she brought home a dead baby skunk and squirrel. Dethan is a big teddy bear. What a nice breed.

My Newfie found a baby bunny and I felt so sorry for it. He kissed it and slobbered all over it

I have been trying to find a Newf for months now the be the adoptive sister to my Pyrenees. I'm noticing a difference here between the behavior of the Newf and a Pyr. The Pyrenees is also a gentle giant, but a Pyr would lay down and turn his back to the bunnies, and keep watch over everything around except for the bunnies. I guess that's the difference between a nanny dog like the Newf, and a guardian like the Pyr.

I dont think the mom would ever come back when her burrow is guarded by such giant beast...

Your dog is adorable!! But I agree with Sharon Abelson. Imagine how massive Dethan, a predator, must have appeared to those poor, defenseless creatures. I'm glad you covered their nest up shortly afterwards.

My LN girl has a prey drive. 😖

Go ahead and tell me Dogs are not intelligent. I mean, how does he know they need protection? Otherwise he would just have had a delicious meal.

While I love your dog and all the videos you should not allow him to be so close to the bunnies. I work with wildlife and it is extremely stressful to the bunnies which is obvious by their reactions (the jumping). Bunnies are highly susceptible to stress and can die from it. While it is amazing that Dethan just watches over them, it is sad from the point of view of the bunnies. They can smell the dog and he is a predictor to them. Imagine how stressful that would be to smell and see a predictor's face so close for so long. Please fence off the area if you ever have another nest of bunnies to keep the dog a safer distance. Love the videos of Dethan in his water dishes.

I think that you mean well but are anthropomorphising based on your own feelings. The bunnies can tell that the dog is not truly a predator species and wouldnt hurt it. Newfs have all predator behaviours bred out of them, our two Newfs would be dead in days if left to fend for themselves as they have not one predatory bone left in their dear sweet bodies. Newfs are bred to be guardian/ rescue dogs. Please have a look online at other guardian breed dogs that have taken care of wildlife (like the penguins in Australia) the wildlife instinctively know they are no threat to them and trust these dogs. The bunnies dont look at all stressed to me, they are fast asleep, not something a stressed animal does.

i agree animals can sense the danger much better than us. There are so many videos of small babies playing really rough with big dogs. But dogs are very friendly, gentle and don't even react. One reason is said is dogs find babies to be "no threat" and safe due to their small size. Even here Dethan might subconsciously feel that bunnies are his puppies and would be very gentle with them. And Newfies are most gentle breed in the world. He is really adorable and I would like to hug him.
