Determination or Assay of Sodium Chloride (NaCl) by Titration_A Complete Procedure (Mohr’s Method)

Determination of Sodium chloride percent is an important testing parameter for table salt and other food sample. This video represents the detailed procedure of Sodium chloride percent analysis by the Mohr’s Method. This method determines the chloride ion concentration of a solution by titration with silver nitrate. As the silver nitrate solution is slowly added, a precipitate of silver chloride forms. The end point of the titration occurs when all the chloride ions are precipitated. ______________________________________________________________________

    actual normality for silver nitrate should be (0.101) not 0.099 because (N*v) for Sodium chloride =(N*v) for silver nitrates (0.1*10)=(9.9*N) silver nitrite so normality silver nitrite =0.101 in case of sample preparation you weight 0.25 and dissolved in 50 ml of distilled water if i use 25 ml can affect on the result or no

    Drnermin Elmasry, Thank you for your observations. You are right about the Actual Normality. You can also use 25ml distilled water instead of 50ml and it will not cause any error in the result.

    I'm testing tap water, why isnt my solution turning a milky color like yours? Is it because it has a low concentration Chloride from NaCl? Or does it react differently when the Cl source is calcium hypochlorite?

  • @MicroChemsExperiments

    @MicroChemsExperiments

    NaCl concentration in tap water is very low (may be less than 100ppm). This low concentration of NaCl can not be determined by this method. Maximum chlorine in tap water may be present in other forms rather than NaCl.
