Detention - A Real Horror (Game Analysis)

Ойындар

Hey, this video took a while to make so you better like it :D
Detention is not the usual horror game, instead of the visual and sounds taking center stage, it's the actual contents of the story (hence the tittle), I thought this was pretty cool. In this video i'll give a basic analysis of the story and all of the eastern cultural references that i picked up on.

Ray's mom getting her dad arrested then saying "he'll live" no doubt instilled it into Ray's mind that the government won't kill the book club, only rough them up at most.

Oh my god, that's genuinely such an important little detail.. Ray chose to snitch on them because she didn't think they'd die, but they (or assuming most of them) did. Or faced the worst possible tortures possible, more than she could imagine. That decision that she thought would only have little consequence did so much more. That's heartbreaking.

What stands out to me is how much Ray didn't want to be anything like her mom, yet essentially retaliated in the same manner that she did. This does not excuse Cheng's actions at all, he's a predator. It's just pointing out some similarities.

@@mars199 I wonder if Ray and her mother did the exact same things. Like, I don't know if cheating on your wife warrants a house search, so maybe her mother falsely accused her husband of consuming censored media or siding with communists. That would make them both people who were in a rough patch and felt betrayed by a man who they believed was meant to love them, causing them to rat them out to the authorities.

@@mars199 I'd also say she acted *because* she saw how terrible her mothers life was just keeping her husband around. Her mother was passive for so long and it was torturous, and Ray swore to never be like that. She decided that if that ever happened to her, she wouldn't lie down and take it but she'd actually do something about it. It wasn't her fault she had the power to do so much worse.

My parents were raised during white terror, both barely mention their life as a kid in school, but when they did, it was usually in a distant tone. Disappearing friends, beatings, praising poems, shaming “dog boards” on the neck, they said these things as if it's not their childhood, like it's a weird dream. And honestly? It's probably for the best.

The lantern spector in Chinese is 鬼差 that means "ghost catcher" or "spirit catcher". In the old Chinese legend, this spector comes, finds and catches any spirits that has died and hasn't been routed to a place in hell where you'll go trough trials (阎罗殿) So what I think that is, is that the girl is constantly hiding from the spector due to her unfinished wishes (idk how to make it makes sense lol)

37:18 The necklace/pendant wasn't thrown away, she jumped off the school building, it flew off and dropped into the vent, and that's how her ghost got stuck in the school. It's evident because you see a shadow of her jumping off when you go to the roof one time (the first time iirc).

I dont think so. Think of the imagery of the rat in the vent. Symbolising her want to "rat" on the secret book club in order to get the female teacher ( I forgot some names cus I played this a long time ago). And why would her spirit be attached to the necklace exclusively? Her subconscious guilt is what holds her in the school, remember that Meng po can only help souls move on after they account for their deeds in their waking life.

The bad ending of the game has Rey hanging herself in the auditorium. Combined with first finding her on the stage and her waking up there again, and Wei getting hung in the same location, it's fairly clear that's where she died. Plus, the shadow creature, Lantern Spectres and puppets all grab Rey by her neck and lift her into the air before snapping her neck. The shadow-Rey seen jumping from the roof is either general suicide imagery, or a representation of how Rey contemplated suicide by jumping off the roof.

Here's a random collection of things I've observed: -Mr Bai (白) has the surname 'white', while Mrs Yin, doesn't have the same word but a similar pronunciation to the word for shadow or darkness (阴) which is also pronounced as 'yin'. -The table where you get the markings off the blood and the piano you play, they all looked used. There's an undenying factor of repeats and loops but since everything is taking place in Ray's mind, she might not have completely forgotten. The table and piano keys all signify lingering scars and that she has gone through the loop so many times even the scars cannot fade away. It conveys a sort of looming sensation, where she has to face the music and the consequences of her actions one day, until this dream cannot even sustain itself any longer. -In the underground basement where the figures were strapped are four cells: One figure who holds HeiBai WuChang's wooden talisman thing, one who's just there, an empty swinging cell and an unused cell. The figure who holds the card might symbolise Mrs Lin, who literally holds the book club/truth together. (I'll talk about the HeiBai guards later) The second figure probably symbolises Wei, who is alive after the whole fiasco. The empty cell which has the phantom appear is almost certainly Mr Chang's, since he's just a lingering memory as he was executed as punishment. However, the unused one seems to symbolise Ray, who was supposed to be prosecuted but escaped. -Okay on to HeiBai WuChang. So the doors that they make up basically guard all the suppressed memories/contraband items: The forbidden tape, the strange tape and of course, the puppets shooting one another. They literally guard death, like their true mythological counterparts. (Because the contraband cause death yadda yadda) But the fact that in order to open the gates you need to get the placard from the figure who symbolises Mrs Yin and... Spirits. Honestly, it makes sense. Mrs Yin guards the contraband, but the spirits guard the memories. They guard the memories Ray doesn't want to know again. -Onto to the ghosts themselves: The Lingered are pretty obvious: They are literally lingering memories from past loops. Lingering regrets, if you may. The Lantern Ghosts and the giant shadow demon thing? Honestly I have no idea but the Lantern Ghosts might signify the military officials. Considering how you only meet them after opening up the contraband, it would make sense for them to be there. As for the giant shadow demon thing? Not gonna lie, I feel like it's symbolic of Ray's true thoughts and mentality. She can run from them (first encounter) or ignore them (second encounter) but it's always present and it won't really go away.

as a victim of grooming, this game messed me up big time. just... the realization that there was a time in my life where i would probably have done the same thing for someone who treated me like that? the fact that you didn't berate/vilify Ray is so important in this video. i've seen other people talk about it and they blame Ray for everything, call her a stupid girl, etc, without realizing that she's just ... acting as she's been made to act. that dude wrapped her around his finger, and it backfired. what's extra horrible about all of this, to me, is that i'm not even sure he would have had any consequences had Ray not done what she did. it's nightmarish. great coverage.

I feel bad for Ray, even if she did cause most of the deaths. She was a child who had basically no one to turn to, no one to look up to. Her dad was abusive, and she didn't like her mom. When she finally got someone to actually talk to, that someone groomed her.. So once that was taken away, and she found out Chang and Yin were "together", she decided to try and split them by snitching on the book club that Yin ran, so that most likely she could get Chang all to herself again, not realizing that she was just being groomed. This only led everyone she cared/trusted to be taken away, cause they were all in the club. This then could have led her to suicide as seen at 17:14, so now she wanders the hallways of that same school, unable to go past what had happened, what she did, and how her life went as a whole. She regrets it very deeply, and wishes she could just go back, but she can't, as she says at 25:05.

just played this game and it was such a mix of emotions. what i can affirm it's the story and art were EXTREMELY well done! i loved how the story revealled itself, and the game art helped lots. the imagery symbolism is so incredible it's capable of bringing tears and rage just by looking at it (honestly have no words for how well the creators used the right colors, right places, right soundtracks). and the symbolism is everywhere, since the start, all related to legends and myths, history and small details. this game is so smart. still talking about symbolism, the 27:17 clocks got me in SHOCK. in the previous room, there are portraits on the wall: ray's dad, ray, and ray's mom, respectively (3 portraits). in the next room, there are 3 clocks, same position as the portraits, and the portraits give hints of what to do with the clocks - meaning the portraits are directly related to the clocks. my guess is the clocks represent the family, where dad's clock looks common (typical man for that time), mom's clock looks dirty and broken (means how she felt abandoned and sad), and ray's clock is different: square-shaped with no pointers, meaning how she was different mentally from her family, and wanted to escape that place (no pointers could represent freedom, like it forgot the time). but in the end, ray's clock is filled with blood. it was so sad because she had a life to live. that was just an observation of mine to tell how the game was perfect, even with small details. there's so much stuff everywhere. the game analysis was great! you told me about things i missed, and it was pretty funny with all jokes, but still very clarifying about story. thanks dude! ;)

Sheesh, this was such a nostalgic ride for me. This game was my childhood playthrough horror game in KZread, what with its heavy themes and expressive background. I could understand the cultural and spiritual references pretty well, but the abuse went over my head. It's truly, in my opinion, one of the best "true horror" games I've ever seen.

The first time i watched a detention playthrough, i didn't get the part about Ray and Mr. Chang. I thought it was just a nice moment about a girl finally having someone to confide in. But when you explained it, now I do. And it's much much worse than i thought. Poor Ray...

Thank you for making this video. Not only because of the funny editing and humour, but also because I barely see anyone talk about this game, when it deserves so much more attention and praise. I grew up with this game and it means a shit ton to me; I even got the teeth dice as my first tattoo. The good ending with Wei and Ray makes me heart clench every time.

This is such a well put together story and i absolutely love it. Your commentary is genius and the balance between humor and analysis is god tier. This deserves so many views. Btw can you just tell me if you know, which sound is it from 7:35 to 7:41 I loved the symbolism and the rays story (its tragic lmao) but i still dont understand why there was a typhoon alert in the beginning with Wei cuz why didnt anyone wake him up (because he was sleeping and he woke up) and there was no typhoon either. And our main character is Ray, so why does he has to be in purgatory with Ray. And does this ending happen in the real world or after Ray dies? Sorry if i asked too many questions😅

  • @FreddyDude

    @FreddyDude

Thank you. Wei is not in this so called purgatory. Wei is alive. The wei we see at the beginning would simply be part of rays purgatory and he dies at the beginning because Ray thinks she killed him. As a matter of fact, everything we see in the game pertains to Ray almost exclusively.

Ie my situation is not worse than the family in the game, but Devotion influence so much of how I look at the game. The soundtrack, the ambiance, the distorted world view, the hellscape. Devotion is my favorite horror game of all time

I love true crime, but I’m such a whimpy coward for horror media, specially if it’s related to ghosts/spirits, so thanks for inserting humor at the beginning (and also for the tone down at the end!). this history hits me in ways I can’t explain, specially when Ray is confronted by not remembering or trying not to remember what she did. I tend to romanticize my childhood/teenager years’ trauma or to rescript my past experiences in order to soothe my mind. Hurting and isolating from others in order to keep yourself close from those people or habits who’re actively trying harm you is never something you actually want to do, but it just happens. It’s ever worse when bad people are the ones who pretend to accept you wholeheartedly, and I can’t say Ray is innocent, but I can’t say that it was all her fault, and it’s not only because she’s a child, because fear of abandonment can make you such a reckless mess…

ohh this video was absolutely amazing!!! i love your commentary and the little jokes and memes you incorporated into it, and the editing was chef's kiss. the game itself looks very interesting and the story is really sad yet immersive. i'll definitely play it in the near future as i've always loved point and click games, and the atmosphere here is what i like the most - dark and scary but in a subtle way and not by using some cheap jumpscares (well, except for the one in the telephone scene). i actually started listening to this video as i was cleaning but later became so interested that i had to rewatch it from the start. needless to say, great job, man! i will definitely check out your other videos.

my first theory of the lantern specter could be a symbolism of silence , in that era ,propaganda was greatly spreaded across , to hide their conspiracy , they will silence all knowledgeable people who knew about the truth of the propaganda and execute them in silence. My second theory could also be Fang Rui Shings betrayal to her counselor (also lover hence the necklace that was given to her) the booklist that fang rui shing gave to the general led to the discovery of the secret book club that the counselor was involved in and to be executed could be a reference of guilt of not being silent about it. The series on Netflix ties the same knot to the game but the execution was not shown clearly in game but you get the idea of it where the jail cell in the basement near the Chinese shrine where if you walk past it will somehow show an apparition of maybe seem like the counselor.

so this is the first vid ive seen from you that came across and I love your editing, commentary and humor! definitely subbing, never heard of this game but it handled a false protagonist flawlessly which i don't see very often, and everything in this makes it seem like a really awesome game from the audio to visual methods. I don't know much about this period of history but I do have a couple of thoughts! I think the lantern walker might be like "the light of the truth," which for Ray is something she wants to avoid. That may a very western way of looking at it, but it could also be like another form of "ferryman" for those in the afterlife. Obviously you couldn't show us all the dialogue in the game, but as a daughter of a mother, I didn't quite read Ray as fully like, hating her mother, or being filled with as much vitriol towards her (though I am sure there was resentment present as mother-daughter relationships go). I think ray was probably just as disillusioned with her country's society as wei, and as a woman in the 60's in any part of the world, watching her mother be trampled and take everything without complaint probably filled her with a dread that even if she excelled in school or "enjoyed her youth" she was still signed away to a fate where her future husband would half check out of the marriage and they would be broke. a line you showed at the beginning of ray's flashbacks seemed really poignant to me in that regard, that her life would end up like her mother's. I think it wasn't entirely "i hate my mom my mom is dumb" though I'm sure in some ways she would want her most major female role model in life to stand up for herself, she also seemed to have an awareness that this was very possibly the future awaiting her as well and that even if she were to apply herself, it wouldn't change much. of course I haven't played this game so there very well may be dialogue where ray speaks more harshly about her mother, but a lot of the lines seemed more filled with pity, compassion, and empathy for her mother's predicament up until the search warrant happened. Maybe she wanted her mom to stand up for herself, but wouldn't have imagined or hoped it would be like that. Ray wanted a present father as much as she wanted a present mother. and the day she lost her father was the day she could no longer hold out for her mother to take a more brave approach, instead of what could be seen as a coward's way out. Those are just some thoughts i had, but i really enjoyed this video and I look forward to more in the future!
