DETECTING STRIKES WHEN INDICATOR FLY FISHING ... a part of the Fly Fishing in focus series

DETECTING STRIKES WHEN INDICATOR FLY FISHING ... a part of the Fly Fishing in focus series
As a beginner fly fisherman, one of the most difficult things for me to learn when nymphing ... was determining what was and what wasn't a strike. It took a long, long time to get the "feel." Thankfully, over the years, I've gotten pretty decent at it, and it's ultimately led to a lot more nice fish in the net. With this video, I hope to share some good examples from a recent day out on the water ... showing the moment a strike indicator moves, goes under, or hesitates just for a split second ... it's that exact moment we all hope for and what can make or break a day out on the water. So, please enjoy ... and hope this helps those (myself included!) that are still trying to master the fine art of the strike detection.

lol .. i was wondering what that red flashing light was on the bottom of my car!! Definitely agree with ya ... hard to beat putting a big old brown in the net! I can only imagine the fight some of those fish would've put up in Spring/early Summer. They're a bit on the lethargic side right now, and still fought like hell! Always appreciate your comments and support , dan

Funny you post this just now. Was fishing last week and got completely skunked. Went back the next day and it continued. I took a step back from the river and really thought about what i was doing wrong. Weight seemed good. Flies i felt confident about. etc. I told myself to stop assuming it was a weed or a rock and started setting the hook and just the slightest bit of movement. Even if i was CONVINCED it just quickly hung up on some algae or something I would set. Turns out like 1 out of every 7 times it was a fish!! A zero fish day turned into a 20 fish day in a matter of hours. IT WAS AWESOME. This is my first winter in colorado and these cold fish really don’t move much at all. I don’t expect every day to be a 20 fish day, but i do think this is going to improve my fish catching through the winter. anyways, awesome video. Just thought I’d add my story to back up what you were saying. See you out there!

Oh, that's awesome to hear Sam! Fly fishing is almost two totally different activities when comparing Winter fly fishing to Spring/Summer/Fall fly fishing. The takes are subtle, and every little unnatural movement should result in a hookset. There's a decent chance there's a fish causing that like you said! And if it's not a fish, you likely hit bottom and got a little muck making your flies look way less appetizing, so might as well clean them off before your next drift! It took me awhile to get the hang of it ... definitely an art form ... and why I thought this video might be helpful for people just getting into Winter Fly Fishing! Really appreciate your comment and channel support my friend! Take care and see you out on the water one day, dan

Man, that's just a really great compliment. Thank you. Glad you're enjoying them and I'm gonna keep it up as long as I possibly can :) This one was fun to make ... it's an idea I've had for a long time, but always seem to get distracted or lose focus. At some point, I need a second camera man to be able to use one of my zoom lenses and track the indicator all the way thru the drift (and then repeat that for a good hour or two when the fish are biting). That would be an upgrade over this video for sure. Anyways, glad you enjoyed and thanks as always for the channel support!

Dan, to be truthful, I haven't gone fishing in years. I used to live in the Purcell Mountains of British Columbia, in a log cabin on a series of creeks and lakes that offered up beautiful cutthroat. Those were great days and the best fishing. I've also fished the rivers of Yukon. I must say these are fine fish you're catching. I've never caught a brown trout. They are something else!

  • @WhatMyLensSees

That Purcell Mountain cabin sounds like my dream place! I'm convinced those are some of the most beautiful mountains in the world! I never visited as a "fly fisherman", and would love to go back there someday to test out some of the waters. So many places to see, and so little time (covid isn't helping either!!). And the Yukon, now that's getting out there. There's a backpacking trip I really want to do there in a place called Tombstone Territorial Park. Ever heard of it? From the research I've done, it might just be one of the most jawdropping-ly beautiful places on the planet! Hoping to get there for a week or two one of these Summers!! Always appreciate your comments Raymond. Thanks for the support!! dan

Love your videos. Great photography, great editing, great music and even some good commentary. I check my KZread app often to see if you have posted something new. As a beginner fly fisherman I appreciate your willingness to share information - a video on strikes is great. However most of those strikes seemed pretty obvious with the bobber totally disappearing in the water. I have recently switched to yarn bc I believe I was missing winter strikes on my air lock. Please keeps the videos coming. Your humbleness makes these videos very easy to watch. Thank you!

Hey there Christopher. Really appreciate your kind words and channel support! I spend a lot of time on the water, but way way more time editing, finding the right music, etc etc so always great to hear comments that approve of those things!!! And you’re right, I got lucky with some pretty obvious takes on that day. As I was reviewing the footage, I saw a few very subtle hesitations that I just missed and were likely fish. Was kinda fun to do a little instant replay :) I’ve used yarn indicators a few times but they’re just really tough for me to use in the winter with the kind of rig I’m usually using (split shot plus heavy flies in deeper water). Unfortunately, the yarn just can’t take that kinda weight and just submerges. But definitely a good and highly sensitive indicator when the fish are feeding higher up in the water column and you can use lighter nymphs. Thanks again for watching and commenting! Dan

  • @WhatMyLensSees

Appreciate the feedback. I'll keep at it and try to talk thru a few different strike indicators in future videos. I'm pretty much a thingamabobber guy. It's what I started with and just most comfortable with them. And especially during the Winter, I need an indicator that can stay floating with the heavy flies and split shot that I'm using to get down quickly and deep. As for the rig I use, I did make a video where I talk thru my typical rig. You can find it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q36mvLaBdNqvn5c.html at right around the 07:37 mark of the video. Thanks again for stopping by the channel! dan
