WINTER FLY FISHING is the BEST FLY FISHING 🔥

HOT TAKE ... WINTER FLY FISHING is the BEST FLY FISHING
Difficult to put in words ... and without a doubt better to simply experience ... but there's just something so awesome about Fly Fishing in the Winter. Not sure I can pinpoint exactly why ... but, I think it's some combination of the following: greater sense of adventure, more challenging conditions, less crowds, and for some odd reason ... bigger fish on average. It's taken me a few years to really get it all dialed in ... but now that I have, I don't suffer too much (although it's still freezing cold and it usually takes me a day or two to get the core body temp back up 🤣). Hope you'll enjoy this one with a few Winter tips/tricks and also some nice fish!

lol, there are times when I sit back and think to myself, "are you crazy dude? you're gonna drive 10 hours in one day, hike a couple miles, and then fish another 8-9 hours in the Winter just to catch a couple trout and let em go????" Some people would say we have some sort of mental issue 🤣 And I can totally understand their viewpoint. Fishing really is one of the most addictive things on the planet! And man, when I saw you say "work of art", that really made my day. I know my videos are a lot different than many out on KZread ... and I really strive to make them a bit more artful and less vloggy (probably the photographer in me). So to hear you say that makes me feel good man .... kinda like I'm accomplishing my own mission. Thanks Wayne, your support of the my channel has been incredible my friend. dan

Hey there Matthew. Wow, really appreciate that my friend. And I don’t usually talk about my own videos much, but I’m tending to agree with you ... this is one of my favorites. The second song that begins around the 5:07 mark when the video transitions into the fishing ... that song just lined up so perfectly with the mood and overall experience that day. Plus the clips cut real nice to it :) fishing and filming is definitely healing for me, and this day was certainly a bright spot in an otherwise rough 2020. Really appreciate your kind words and channel support and definitely hope we will get some time out on the water one of these days. Take care until then, dan

Nice fish to be had. Yeah I'd say so! Those were some prime specimens you were catching. Winter is a whole different ballgame for sure. Layers, layers and layers as well as towels and rags to keep your hands dry. I have a pair of gloves that even when wet are still pretty warm. I'm sure if it got cold enough they probably wouldn't be very comfy when wet, but if it's that cold, I'm probably staying home anyway.😂 I like how you put your video together.

Hey there Raymond. Yeah, hit was bound to happen. I actually slipped once in the water and 99% sure the mic went under. Thankfully it happened near the end of the day. I didn't bother checking it out and just kind of ignored the fact I probably just destroyed it :) It's a condition called Fish Brain (where one has a sole focus on catching more fish!!🤣) When I got home and reviewed the footage, I realized I filmed that whole outro with a broken mic and was slightly annoyed, so went the VoiceOver route which worked ok. Good news is now I have an excuse to upgrade and thinking of using something more along the lines of what you have (rode wireless). Always appreciate your comments and insights my friend. dan

Dang those are some really nice fish! This is my first winter fishing in CO and the surprise for me is how early it appears you started catching fish. I've heard don't bother starting until 10am or so when the sun comes out & the fish start getting active - and so your line & guides don't freeze. I was also surprised to seem them so shallow - looks like you had all of 3-4 ft between your indicator and what looked like an egg pattern.

  • @WhatMyLensSees

    @WhatMyLensSees

    3 жыл бұрын

Hey there David, really appreciate you watching and commenting! Glad to hear you're getting out there this Winter! Both the pain and the gain can be quite magnified fishing in the Winter time ;) I've also heard the whole "don't even bother getting on the water before 10am" and I gotta say I just don't agree with that. There are definitely days it's slower in the early morning ... but for every slower day, I've had at least as many mornings like the one in this video where the fishing is really, really good. But with early starts comes all the joys of lines, guides and reels freezing every few seconds. It's a pain to say the least, but I've gotten pretty decent at staying on top of it. Fish do tend to hang in the deeper holes during the Winter where there's less current to fight ... but if it's cloudy/dawn/dusk and no direct sun hitting the water, the fish do still tend to spread out ... especially if there's plentiful food available ;) As for the rig, you're not too far off ... it was probably more like 5-6 ft from indicator to first fly ... and I was throwing a weighted worm and an egg pattern and that was definitely the ticket. Again, really appreciate the comment and channel support my friend! dan

Beautiful Dan just beautiful. Since you like coffee so much, have you ever seen an Ember mug? My wife loves coffee and getting her the Ember made it better. They're pricey but the travel mug will keep your coffee at 145 degrees for 3 hours! Oh and had I been you, the trip would have ended early, there's no doubt I would have tumbled down the hill into the river in the dark. Lamp or no lamp

  • @WhatMyLensSees

Thank you Jim! I haven't heard of that and am definitely gonna look it up! My YETI mug is also pretty adept at keeping coffee nice and warm, but not sure it reaches that Ember level of performance :) And like most guys, I can never have enough cool gadgets 😅 appreciate that suggestion and my wife just asked for a Christmas present idea or two! Regarding that hike ... yeah that felt a little dicey especially since it was basically dark and really slick. Glad I didn't take a spill because would've been a decent fall and pretty sure my fly rod and camera gear would've taken a beating. I've fallen a few times over the years and just funny how I tend to sacrifice my body to ensure I don't break my rod. Some epic bruises over the years 🤣 Always appreciate your support of my channel! Exceptional Video Dan! Good to get a behind the scenes look at what's going on for your winter fly fishing adventures. I'm going to have to start using the power bank with the batteries in the winter when it's below 0 degrees, even the GoPro muff/warmer I use doesn't function well when it gets that cold. I've only been out once to fly fish this winter (attempt to at least) and man it's rough. Beautiful shots and production value as always Dan, the fish you got were awesome looking!! Thank you! Always makes for a better video when the fish cooperate!! And while I don't usually comment on my own videos much, I gotta admit this is one of my favorites I've made. The music really fit when the fishing actually starts up, and sometimes it's all about finding that "just right" song to make a video really hum!! So, that first camera is my Nikon Z6. It's a mirrorless camera and does just a fantastic job of 4k video in low light. So I like to use it for intros when it's still dark ... and also those early hours (pre-dawn and around sunrise) when the actions camera's and iphones don't work well due to their smaller sensors. I'm finding that the more angles, different shots I can get ... the more interesting the video can be. Thus, many cameras on each fishing trip. 4 at the very least 🤷‍♂️And that's my Rode videomic pro + shotgun mic on top ... works really well and has been a huge improvement in audio. I also use a lav mic that's attached to my gopro but think I killed that during the filming of this video ... so hoping Santa comes thru with a new one! Always appreciate your comments and channel support my friend! Happy holidays to you and your family, dan

  • @fatherandsonsfishing

Thank goodness it was only the lav mic, Dan! If it was the Rhode, that would be a much bigger ask from Santa! I'm a Canon guy, and I don't bring it on all my trips, but I've been using my first full frame mirrorless, the EOS R, more and more for video and agree with you about how nice it is to have something for low light. We're a little behind yall Nikon folks in terms of the in body stabilization, though. I did splurge and get the 15-35 f2.8 (even though I have the 16-35 f2.8) because it's image stabilized and it really makes a difference. Canon finally released some cameras with in body stabilization over the summer, so I'll need to ask Santa to stop by my place after he's done with you...😎

Hey Scott, really appreciate that my friend! I gotta admit, it's a lot of fun hunting for these bigger fish. I catch lots of littler fish too, they just don't make the cut in my videos :) As for your stocker question, it really depends on the river, but usually there's a mix of stockers and wild trout. You should definitely come out this way if you ever get the chance. I'd be happy to take you out for a day or two to some of my favorites and hopefully find a couple nice fish :) You could spend a lifetime just exploring Colorado's waters, but then you start adding in the neighboring states and just a little bit further up into Montana, and man oh man....just never ending possibilities!! Thank you very much for the channel support my friend, dan

Cool video, good tips. What flies are you using? How deep are you running them?

Appreciate you watching and commenting Christopher! I was using a triple nymph rig which is pretty much my go-to setup. Had a beadhead pink squirmy worm for starters, then a spanish bullet nymph, and finally an orange egg pattern. I was primarily fishing a tailout section where it was more shallow ... so the distance from my indicator to my last fly was right around 5 to 6 feet. Hope that helps! Take care, dan

Heading up Tuesday to fish the Arkansas over by Pueblo, any advance on patterns to fish. I’m gonna try Euro this time around.

Nice, enjoy the day and hopefully you hook into one of the tanks! I like to lead off with a pink squirmy worm, and then usually small midge and emerger patterns to round out my rig. A few flies that have worked well for me at the Ark tailwater this time of year are: zebra midge, black beauty, top secret midge, miracle midge, rainbow warrior, barr's emerger, RS2, and juju baetis. Be sure to add enough split shot to get down near the bottom (or use euro nymphing flies that are more heavily weighted). Best of luck with it and thanks for the channel support, dan

Nice fish! How long was the big rainbow around 9 minutes?

Hey there, Thank you for watching and commenting. So, I never take the time to measure fish because I try to get them back in the water as quickly as possible. But I can gauge pretty well from how they fill the net. From the bottom of my net to the top is 18" ... and that rainbow more that covered that 18" length. If I were to guess, I'd say 24-25". It was a beast and such a nice surprise after catching lots of beautiful browns. Thanks again for the channel support! Dan

@@Ihelpfixipodtouchs I think it’s the same river as where he got that massive brown in one of the videos, but the flow looks higher and that spot has a lot less rocks. Idk though
