Detailing This Tiger I's Exterior: (Airfix 1/35 Tiger I "Early Version")

Hi Guys,
Today we are going to detail this Tiger I. The kit really is lacking, and so we're going to spruce it up a little. I am going to wire it, texture it, and damage it. I am also going to wire the smoke dischargers, which is going to be a super cool detail. Enjoy!

Nice work there. One observation is that the fenders had square mounting blocks with the bolt thread in them. There were no big holes in the side of the hull behind them. Your holes are also bigger than the bolt heads you made.

Take a lighter to your PE it takes the spring properties out the brass and alot easier to bend and dint more realistically, and rub your nail over the tops when attached to the grills it'll take a more real bending in to the grill bars to pushing in a hardened bit of PE! Same with your brass rod if it's solid to get a good ben use a lighter till you see the brass colour turn

I simulate bullet damage 12:48 with my soldering iron at maximum heat. Then you don't really have to go to the plastic itself. The melt marks grenades can leave behind look pretty nice, at least to my eyes. However, if you're not careful, you'll kill the tiger with a huge hole. Awesome video, it helps me alot THX

@@ScaleStudioModeling To be honest, I change the soldering tip when I use it for a different purpose ;-) because if you want to solder fine things afterwards, that's not optimal otherwise

I used Tamiya grey putty, but I may be switching techniques for future models, techniques are still in dev, and you guys will definitely hear about it if I switch. For grey putty, make sure to thin it with either modeling cement if acetone, and build it up in one or two layers. Glad you liked the video!

  • @AFV85

No one ever remembers to do the shrapnel damag with the thinned putty at a ricachie hit you would see the blast groves damage left around the hit mark! I think I've got a good effect I'm experimenting with just using a hard dried brush used before for stippling texture on before it's now giving a shrapnel effect with all the bristles stuck together and solid now it really does look the part!

Can you tell us where you got the drill bits with the handle molded on? I can't seem to find those anywhere, and it seems like a really great idea to not have to mess with changing bits in a pin vice all the time.

That was a pin vice, unless I used a twist drill, which looks like this www.ebay.com/itm/PCB-Drill-Bit-0-1-1-0mm-Tungsten-Carbide-Micro-Drill-Bit-Print-Circuit-Board/393036943489?var=661950688518

Did you glue the lower hull to the lid and front panel? In the manual it says to just assemble and not glue. I’m guessing this is so you can look inside, but I don’t like the idea of the tank just being loose and insecure.

I felt the same way as you, I glued it, and then made sure there are no seams by re-doing the weld with epoxy putty.

I would suggest you do a little more research on things you're super detailing, making sure the changes are more accurate than the kit detail and you're not just detailing for the sake of detailing. For instance, the holes you drilled in the hull for the skirts, aren't a thing. The actual skirts were bolted to small square blocks (with the upper outer edge chamfered) welded to the hull as drilling holes in armor plate is not advisable. Most plastic kits mold these on the hull side, but this Academy tooling is ancient and they did not do that. But Tiger1.info has dimensionally correct diagrams and even CAD files of the correct mounts. I'll forgive that you simplified the side mudguards as even if you did check out his diagrams of those, Im not sure those bends would be worth it as they are tiny in 35th. One other thing is your PE clamps are on backwards. The handles face the glacis not the band. All of this is minor, but If you're gonna call it super detailing do your homework.

Adam Mann, thanks for watching. Yeah, I think I may change the title. I know you’re the Tiger king, so thanks for the advice. I really didn’t do too much research, as you can see. Much of it was for just a visually detailed, if not historically detailed model. I’m not exactly what you would call a “rivet counter” even if I’d like to be. Do you know if there is a generally good website for references?

@@ScaleStudioModeling Tiger1.info for the Tiger. Nice work on the kit, I really like to see modelers going back to our roots by making fenders out of pop cans and sourcing detail items from the hardware store. Rivet counting, $30 detail sets, $60 tracks and buying molded zimmerit panels can really suck the fun out of this hobby.
