Detailed account of deadly mountain lion attack

Taylen and Wyatt Brooks loved doing everything together, so when a 90-pound male mountain lion attacked them together, they bravely tried to fight it off to try and protect each other.

However, I like the real story to be told instead of caring about the feelings of the brother that left the other for dead. This was only one person who attempted to be a hero in this story. They didn't "fight for each other". One fought the other, that one then ran.

I had my own cougar encounter 2 years ago while gold panning on a creek on Vancouver island. I was lucky enough that I saw them ( there was 2 together) before they saw me. One was an older one with the black markings on the face, the other was a young one with no black on the face. I was panning on the creek behind a big boulder that partially shielded me from their sight. they came out on a fallen tree that went out over the creek and were looking around up and down the creek. I just froze in place since by bear spray was over 20 meters away in my pack and did not think I could get to it before they could get to me. Luckily there was a branch on the fallen tree they were on that partially blocked their view of my position and I was down wind of them as well. My only thought was to stay still as I know cats react to movement more than anything else. I am also glad I did not have my dog with me that day or things could have turned out very badly. The older one did look my way eventually but could not get a clear view because of the tree branch but did a head-bob trying to get a clearer view of me. They did eventually move on but I stayed frozen in place for another 5 minutes just in case. ALWAYS carry bear spray!!!

They had already smelled you bro, their scent is 30x what ours is. They were just not interested. They don't need to see you to know you were there, that's why he looked over, to make sure the source of the smell wasn't a threat. And if it was the older Lion looking your way, it's likely he had encountered humans before and knows the smell already.

A friend of mine and me were planting crops along a stream under the tree line cover in east San Diego county 14 years ago. A Cougar crept up on us as dusk hit. After it was dark, we could hear it using the sound-cover of wind blowing leaves to creep around; they're smart AF! After firing our shotgun at the direction of it several times, it still wouldn't leave and persisted us! We carefully hiked out of the treeline cover of the creek, and after we got to the clearing, it stopped following us. They're 100% fierce! I checked his tracks the next day and scouted him jumping down from a tree. Must've been an easy, 200+ lbs male. They're fearless, and no bullsh!t!!

I saw one on Cuesta Ridge, CA, north east of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. This was in the 80s. I was driving, a bit after sun down and the ML was crossing the road in front of me, broadside. Head to tail, that thing occupied the entire width of the one-lane road. I suppose it was living on the prolific range cattle that roam those hills. Anyhow I couldn't help thinking an unarmed man would have no chance in hell against such an animal. Then I thought about how we would go traipsing through the nearby hills of camp San Luis Obispo all night in pitch dark as ROTC cadets, learning dismounted patrolling, laying down quietly in the brush, and so forth.

When help came, she was still fighting. Once she knew her children were safe, she died. If she'd had even a Mora knife, I think she could have killed the cat in 2 hours of work. Yeah I have 879 wooded acres most of the time I'm in a Polaris Ranger Northstar but never go out on the land without my Glock 20. Big cats and Bear are abundant out on my land and thankfully the Polaris will normally scare them off so I've never had to use it on wildlife. That said if you are walking and sneak up on a cat or a bear they will attack you 9 times out of 10...

i think the news assumes people listening to it have common sense and understood they were not armed considering the only action they took before, after and during being attacked was throwing a backpack at it. Don´t get mad at someone else if you lack common sense, and an IQ higher than 0.1

This is so sad to feel so hopeless you had to stop fighting to call for help. I feel so much pain for the brother that survived. He did what he could. That mountain lion came down from hibernation and was super hungry probably hasn’t ate in a very long time. This is very sad.
