One very minor point in all this that I also appreciate: Sam survives that situation at the end not because Nate becomes mega strong through the power of plot and lifts the beam he couldn't previously lift, he goes "wait, we're on a boat. Knowing these guys and their paranoia, these cannons are probably all loaded. It'd be easy enough to use one to flood this room and float the beam off him." It's a solution that relies on Nathan not only being smart, but understanding the history involved here - in short, it's a solution that relies on Nathan Drake being *Nathan Drake.*

I actually really like the fact that the treasure this time around isn't magical and it's just the Greed of people that keep killing each other over it. Not only is it a great subversion of the previous 3 games, but it reminds me of the Sherlock Story 'The Pearl of Death'.

As Red and Blue point out at the end here, I love that the happily ever after to this game is not "we should live a stereotypical suburban life, because mundane normality is the ideal, and who wants to do the adventuring thing anyways?". Instead, Nate and Elena learn to communicate better and be honest with themselves and each other, and in the process of doing so, settle on a happy ending that actually feels happy and long-term sustainable for them. Man, the writing for this game is so good 🙂

  • @bradleybourgeois4710

    @bradleybourgeois4710

Agreed. While there is nothing inherently wrong with an adventurer wanting to retire, that kind of life isnt the happy ending every one seeks, as we see Nathan Drake. While he's never been a fan of the potential death that came with his treasure hunting life style, he was genuinely excited when he found lost history and treasure, less for the monetary value and more out of true love for the adventure and discovery. Living a normal life can NEVER work, because while he's safe he isn't doing something he likes either. That's why Nate's happily ever after is simply adventuring with his loved ones in a a safer manner, because that he is at his core: a curious adventurer with a love for history.

Ever since I watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a young twenty-something (back when it was being broadcast) I have been highly skeptical of any story and storyteller who feels they *have to* kill off beloved characters to "up the stakes." No. No, you don't have to do that. Tara shouldn't have died. Joyce shouldn't have died. We could have gotten good stories without such things. Joss Whedon can eat a bag of his own writing.

  • @BrewerM23

Never played this series, but, based on this, it sounds like... If Nathan had come clean to his wife first thing, and awkwardly gotten out "So, ok, I thought my brother was dead, turns out he was stuck in jail for 15 years and he's in debt to this bad guy...but there's a pirate treasure we have a lead on. And, ok, I know I promised that we're never doing this again, but, I really need to save my brother, so I can I do this one last score." ...by the time he was halfway finished Elena would have her go bag packed and camera ready, and be in the middle of phoning her boss to tell him she's got another "Nathan Drake Searches for Lost Treasure" article in the works. Which is why *communication is important*, people.

Fair enough, but I take it as Nathan still trying to keep her separated from the world he came from. She's the journalist, but he's the treasure hunter who deals with killing people for the sake of "it's them or me because they are trying to kill me." And not just that, but all the death traps from these lost ancient cities where maybe he doesn't want to have the possibility of someone getting hurt because they are following him. This is his destructive side, and she's someone who knows little of what being that way entails. Sam, Sully, Chloie, Charlie.... they grew up living that life just like him. Elena did not so he tries to keep her separated. By the end of 4 he learns that there is a middle ground they can both share. They can go about treasure hunting the safer route but Elena can handle herself so long as they are working together. Or at least that's how I see it

I’ve always liked the parallel between Elaina’s “I almost didn’t.” And Nate’s “if you go, I’m not coming to save you!” Both transparently untrue warnings taken seriously by the people that hear them, both walked back out of a love the one who gave the warning couldn’t ever leave behind. Also a clear indicator that Nate gets it, finally being to one warning someone he loved away from doing something stupid and pulling them out of it anyway. Also very funny that Nate says “I’m really sorry but I gotta go save this idiot I love before he gets himself killed.” And Elaina’s just like “I get it, go get him honey.”

Don't sleep on Uncharted: Golden Abyss. It didn't have Elena, but the de facto love interest, Chase, not only is referenced in Uncharted 4's attic, but she basically represents Nate's love of archaeology and loyalty to the people he loves in contrast to Dante being arguably the best villain in the series and a way better evil Nate, representing his love of treasure hunting and willingness to deal with unsavory characters in that pursuit, than Rafe or the guy from Uncharted 2. Not to mention that Uncharted 4 puts a new perspective on what Nate was saying about Panamanian prisons in this game, especially when the secondary villain might have been in power when Sam was locked up. Plus, SPOILERS since the treasure actually *was* lethally radioactive, "This is not a place of honor" really fits.

My fav thing in that argument in Uncharted 4 was when Elena asked Nate if there was a Malaysian job and she doesn't get an answer, she's playing with her wedding finger. Considering all the grief he has given her, that was such a small gesture that could've blown up, but perfectly showed what's on her mind.

Elena is wearing an updated version of her outfit from the first game. Which I think adds to the pirate table scene. They're on an island jungle, trying to save Nate's loved one, piecing together what the hell happened, and falling in (or, in Uncharted 4's case, rediscovering) love with one another. 2.) Elena playing dead is definitely her fucking with Nate for funnies. But please imagine Nate having the worst flashbacks to the end of Uncharted 2 where he almost lost her to an explosive.

So there are a few thing I want to mention after watching this lovely video that were not featured first: the third game is more about Nathan and Sully's relationship, meaning all the other characters take a backseat to giving Sully as many Deathflags as possible second: I was really hoping the would put in the rope "hug trap" in around 1:09:10, I feel like that was a missed opportunity third: Sam's survival comes from Nathan putting a hole in the ship to allow water in and raise the beam holding down Sam, being this games way of having Nathan reject the treasure And if you all enjoyed what you saw of Uncharted 4, ChipCheezumLPs did a very good Lets Play of it and all the previous games.

It's (relatively more) easy to make fun diatribes about things one doesn't like, to trash and pick apart, hell I love watching that kind of content, but to be able to do the same with video essays _praising_ something? I still go back and rewatch the DD on the setup and payoff of SSJ in DBZ since the way y'all present and break it down it in that video is such a perfect encapsulation of the whole arc in a format that is much quicker than, well, re-watching all of DBZ through the Frieza arc (not Kai, I will die on the hill of not Kai even if it is objectively better). Just well done and congratulations all around.

Y'alls commentary and discussion are so enjoyable. I have friends and family that are fans of this series and even my game-play challenged self enjoyed the games' story pretty deeply. Everything is on the table in these games and they never stop being mysterious and engaging. I appreciate how much you guys enjoy and advocate for discussion and absolutely bring forth the spirit of fhe story in your discussion. Thanks for such a nice time listening to a convo I shamelessly would have had a blast being a part of.

Your preview on Patreon about this video coming out was the reason why I decided to play this entire game in a few days after I just... never got around to it for years despite really liking 1-3, and I'm glad I did. But your analysis certainly made me appreciate this one, and the whole series, much more

I sincerely hope you guys do a detail diatribe on Uncharted: The Lost Legacy because a) it's my favorite and b) it actually came out the year I started my World History class and then the year afterwards was when I started Art History and just completely fell in love with it, both the subject and the game. Uncharted 4 is a close second to me because it is a very very good game, but Lost Legacy hit me at just the right time and at just the right spot. Anyways, please do more of this kind of thing, the last several detail diatribe's (actually of all them) have been amazing.

Uncharted 4 was the first one I played, when my dad bought the PS4. I must have played that game about 5 or 6 times since, I love everything about it. I eventually played all the other games, and seeing their full arc was really a gamer formative experience, Nathan and Elena kind of showed me how I would want my relantionship to be like.

From what I’ve heard and seen about Uncharted 3’s writing is that after 2 is when Neil Druckmen took some of the team to go do The Last of Us so they were operating at half capacity likely or at the very least on a crutch It would probably at least explain Talbot and his magic powers that come from nowhere (thank you Bricky for pointing how bad it gets with him)

It's a bit more complicated, but I've seen rumors circle around how U3's development was structured. The level designers would start first with making the setpieces, then write the game around the setpieces and how we got there. From a story-perspective, the shipwreck and all the pirates is pure filler, but it exists cause "we have to justify this cool setpiece in the ocean". I don't think any of this was cofnirmed though, so take it at a first glance. The Talbot stuff to me screams "re-writes". You constantly see characters question how he's able to do what he does, I wouldn't be surprised if he was intended to be a supernatural creature in first drafts.

@@leithaziz2716 yeah it’s probably much more complicated than a single KZread comment thread can put it into and I have seen Amy Henning and Nolan North talk about it being they did the action points first and then the writing later but I remember watching the Last of Us being made and Neil did say he went to Amy during early production of Uncharted 3 with the approval of Amy to make his own game and he took some of the team to start early work on it. With the writing team of uncharted only three people for the second game and only Amy worked on the writing for Uncharted 3 I can see why it was narratively all over the place.

ooh wow, this was very cool! I had never played any of the Uncharted games and really didn't know much about them, but I was really enthralled by y'all's video, and now I might be interested in trying this one XD. I do really love story-heavy games, so it's interested to see how a franchise like this handled that. Also really interested in this subject of endings, because that really is something I've thought about a lot in media...and grappled with in my own writing. Just, in my experience, there's been many things I've liked but felt unsatisfied with the ending for, which is understandablebecause endings are hard, but it's really special when a series does do that well. Also, it's funny, this a dramatic different target audience, but this got me thinking of the Ducktales reboot again, which is very likely my favorite reboot of a childhood show ever. Because *it* played on themes of adventure and family and where those things come in conflict with each other, with Scrooge literally being the character who Cannot Retire because adventuring is his lifeblood, and with Della having a similar struggle packaged in a different kind of arc: she's missing for 10+ years in an accident in part caused by her own recklessness and inability to take a break from danger, which means her brother has to raise her kids, and he in turns rejects their adventuring past and understandably has conflict with both of them over this, while also hiding said past from said kids, which doesn't turn out well. Which is a whole thing, but that aside, I really liked the way they did the ending. It was that one last big epic conflict, and it almost ends with Scrooge having to swear off adventuring with the threat of his family's lives on the line, which doesn't happen but still ends with choosing them above everything else, because the treasure will never be more important, but there is very much an "the adventure continues" note that it finishes on. Adventure is family, and they'll still be doing what they do, but their arcs are nicely wrapped up, and they are going to be going forward in this together, and as better people. So yeah, very nostalgic feeling over that one already :)

I like to watch playthroughs of games that are out of my genre/skill level if I find the premise interesting, Uncharted 4 being one of them & it continues to live in my head rent free. The concept of a pirate paradise & the underlying themes of human greed & obsession are SO compelling. Tying in the treasure hunting & uncovering ancient lost cities, & well-written characters is like striking gold. I was so excited to see this diatribe come up, & now I'm going to go watch a playthrough again.

Uncharted is literally my childhood and is also what made me into a history buff Uncharted 4 is my favourite story in any video game and that ending quite literally broke me. Nothing has topped it and I cry every time I see Cassie. I want them to make a sequel to uncharted that stars Cassie in the future doing what she loves and finding lost treasures.

love the part in 4 before the epilogue with the return to crash bandicoot banter over who'll do the paperwork: "on a scale of one to ten, how afraid are you of a rematch?" obviously the whole thing is more than callbacks, it's a wrapping up of the themes as a whole as discussed, but still, the little callbacks are very cute.
