Thanks for all the feedback on my previous testing videos it helped me come up with this video idea to put the results from our past tests into perspective. you'll notice some jump cuts in the edit, I increased torque in increments of 20 inch/lbs but to save you time I cut out the increasing process.

Another great video, covered most of it, certainly helped put it all in context.......with these types of tests it can be helpful to activate the tool (open/close) to determine how much if any of the tools functionality is effected by the heavy use. Keep up the good work, cheers

Absolutely outstanding demonstration using real measurement methods we can relate to. I have both the wave and now the surge. The surge looks and feels like it has more potential for difficult tasks but it's good to see the components IN the surge are up to the task as well. Excellent Excellent Excellent demo!

That was a worthwhile test. I have the ratchet driver and good to know that my tool will give out first.

I'm really, really, pleased my Surge bit driver is MUCH stronger than I thought ! Thank you for this test ! This was like a Scream movie for Multitool fans.

Yeah definitely,long live the surge,glad I'd finally saved up an bit the bullet an got mine,a few months ago an no regrets so far,I need a bit extender an a good ratchet I saw called the 711, people doing reviews on it,I like it so far,so I'm going to get it for the surge,but there is another one on there roughly same price but it's a tad longer but meant for the hand that'll hold Leatherman flat bits an 1/4 inch bits as well an can handle more torque in my opinion like the surge has demonstrated

But anything that's too much then yeah I'm going for the main tool designed to handle the tougher jobs,but for most things it'll come in handy.

Thank you for such an informative and unbiased tests and results, and for them to be more "real-use-approach". Although I would not subject my Waves, bit drivers or ratcheting bit driver to such an extreme (just like you said, if I were to need more force/torque, I'd go and get the specific tools to perform the task at hand), it is good to know that they'll perform well in an unexpected situation. Kudos to you, Sir on a job well done.

Nicely done! Many years ago my wife bought me a new Wave that has since been worn out, but never broken. A few years ago I bought a Wave Plus. Just recently, based on what contestants on the "Alone" series most commonly chose, I bought the Surge. Based on my usage, and now your testing, the Surge is definitely the strongest of the three and the most useful. But as you said, every tool has its limitations, especially tools designed for multi-purposes. It's ALWAYS best to use the right tool for the job. By the way, the episode of Alone where the guy uses his Leatherman Surge to completely skin and butcher a moose is pretty amazing. That was the only knife he was had. 😊

Awesome video. Makes me even happier that I bought the Ratchet I know I'll never break it. The ratchet has already made my work soooo much easier.

Thank you! yeah Leatherman did a good job balancing form factor and function. it's hard to get stuff that small and still be durable, think they hit the sweet spot.

your spot on. 1 get the right tool for the job, 2 leatherman is engineered (not somebody guessing), 3. a multitool is meant for somewhat of a substitute, conviniance on you all the time thing but it has it's limits that common sense should inform but if it does not.......... the engineers who designed it will save your but and cover the company's but all in one quick and ez step.

Great video. Hate to see you sacrifice your Leatherman, but it was for a good cause. Leatherman’s new ratchet driver will perform well under the normal uses meant for an EDC multitool., and then some.

Thanks for the video. I have the Leatherman Bit driver for my Surge. It works well with my Gerber MP600 and several of my SAKs. My wife was wanting to get the ratcheting driver for me. So, it gives us more good information to go with.

It would be very interesting to see what other multi-tool bit drivers can handle, like the Bibury, Center-Drive, and Multiforce. Expensive for sure, but interesting.

I think it would come down to the Gerber Centerdrive or the Victorinox SwissTool X. in both cases I think you'd tweak the hell out of the handle before the bit driver failed. Thanks for watching!

Hell yeah,that's why after seeing your tests with the surge,is why I bought one a few months ago an love it,not that I'd go overly heavy with it,but glad to know it's pretty touch for the money,it's a bit pricey before everything is going up,but I have no regrets getting this tool what so ever,I'd highly recommend this tool to my friends,but not everyone can afford it,I understand an two not not everyone wants the weight of the surge,I'm getting a charge plus tti next.

It would be interesting to know what can be done with 25 Nm in daily life. You know by tightening a screw here and there to give us an idea for those of us who do not have a torque meter at home. Good video thanks

Great video - I think it is well designed for what you need it for and to your point, get the right tool if you have a large fastener to install. Does your bit adaptor on the tool itself hold the bits pretty securely or is there play and is it easy to pull the bits off? On my Surge the little retaining spring holds the bits, but not as securely as I would like. I wish it was an adaptor like on the Skeletool.

The bit adapter on this wave was pretty secure still (I had a couple to pick from) all things break if you try hard enough so I wanted to frame this video with som baselines for comparison. Thanks for watching!

So, it's fair to say that in normal screwdriver grip use, with only hand strength - we will most likely never need to fear breaking our leatherman tools!

Yeah you'd have to try to break it, I really don't see anyone just "accidentally" breaking it. I'm sure someone will jump in and try to tell us all he's the hulk but realistically it's not going to be an issue.

I often use my Wave at work when I need a screwdriver, and was thinking of getting one of these to make it a little longer and easier to handle. I never use my Wave in pistol grip, so as not to strain it too much, but all the same it's good to know it has plenty more to give before breaking. Thumbs up and subbed!

Yep, everything has a breaking point. I think leatherman did a nice job balancing weight, strength, & form factor

Please do a test on the 3d Philips and it's extension on the rebar and super tool. Would love to know how it stacks up against the wave and surge.

Would you sell the broken pieces? If like to do some testing on the ratchet part and these are between overpriced and unavailable at the moment.

Do you think having the pocket clip installed wouldve helped the wave?

not really. I think it's nice for carry but doesn't help/ hurt the usability of the driver itself.

La matraquita soporto 35 Nm y el porta herramienta de la wave solo 25 Nm, si quieres saber mas o menos cuanto es? debes conseguir un torquimetro y sujetalo como si fuera la wave y dale hasta que levantes los 25 Nm. Lo cual segun yo no es mucha fuerza yo creo que un tornillo que se ponga difícil si puede llegar a romper el porta herramienta.

I'm thinking the tab on it will be close to 300 inch/lbs like the ratchet tab was. I've had a couple people ask about the socket itself, I'll probably get by bigger torque wrench out and give it a go. any guesses on how many FT/ LBS it'll take? I'm thinking 50+

it's still under warrantee so technically yes, that being said I'm not going to because I intentionally broke it so it wouldn't be very honest of me to submit a warrantee claim.

Great Video. When it comes down to it this is just a multitool, while being possibly the best on the market its still not the be all and end all, and anything can be tested to destruction. But as someone has already stated, it would be nice to see the Leatherman equivalent from Victorinox, Gerber SOG and whoever and see which comes out tops? Thats out of my price range though.

That would be interesting, of course I don't really want to break all of my tools lol :P, I think the Leatherman bit adapter sacrifices strength in exchange for interchangeability and form factor. I think the Swiss Tool X or Gerber center drive would have the strongest bit driver, it's really going to come down to the handles on those, I don't think the driver would fail on either. screwdrivers chiped on my surge. big and medium included, not the bits. serrated blade dul after i cut 1 medium ziptie. oh, the scissors, omg, i had to use a center punch on the joint. on Squirt PS4 scissors too.

Thats surprisingly low for what i thougt it could handle, like a mountainbike needs 10nm on most screws and I dont consider that much. Best be gentle with mine 🤣

It’s a fair amount, it’d be hard to exceed it wit the leatherman handle. But it can’t compete with a wrench 🤣🤣

I broke my Surge bitholder; and it broke in a completely same fashion.

well since mine is already damaged I guess I may as well! I'll probably snap the tab off, then reclamp and see if I can break the socket with my large torque wrench. any guesses on how many FT/LBS it'll take?

You can send it to leatherman and they will fix it or replace it.

TAKEAWAY - Don't change a tire with a Leatherman!!!

Pretty much! Every tool has its limits! Even we’ll made ones

420 stainless steel is NOT the toughest tool steel. Comes a point in 'every' mechanics life, when he knows(before grabbing it up) what a given tool can and can't do. That usually happens between 20-25 yrs. old. You become able to feel the tool give, before it snaps. Paying $100+ for a Surge without knowing its limits might not be the most intelligent way to gain that experience. Maybe walk on a MAC or SNAPON tool truck and buy a 1/4" straight bladed screwdriver. It'll be a whole lot less expensive. BTW, the best 1/4" ratchet design was made by Blackhawk(Patented). Mac tools, out of Washinton Court House, Ohio, used that design for decades, between 1950-1975. Not sure if anyone makes one like it today. Had a 20-toothed pawl in it. Same design in the 1/4, 3/8 & 1/2" ratchets. Practically bulletproof. You young guys need to buy Larrin Thomas' book: Knife Engineering, and learn about the various tool steels in detail. That'll shorten up your learning curves & save you bunches of $$$

Test void when you didn’t use a 1/4 hex bit and jerry rigged a Phillips at a detrimental testing point….

Please do a comparison with a Gerber center drive or even an armbar. Comparison vids double the audience and tripple the emotion

Keep in mind each time you increase the torque your weakening it every time you do that so really that's really not a true test just so you know grasshopper

nice test. makes me really confident on my tool. That's how it should be...for my little emergency tool :) All I can say. Your bit was worn off from your tests. You should never use that strength. As you broke the Wave one side of the handle bend extremely. If you do that...you know you are destroying it. But most important. The strength you need to destroy it you never can do with the tool. To me it says that every part is as strong as it needs to be.

Agreed. I think this was a pretty practical test. If I wasn’t able to break it bare handed then it’s designed well in my opinion. Every tool will break given enough force :)
