xFrShizzLEx Thanks, every time I get rid of a junk tractor, I always regret it because I need some part a few days latter.

humm.... nice job. Got some ideas for my mower deck repair. I would point out that I would definitely not leave the spindle mounted when completing the welding though, thats a lot of heat soak and a good way to fry the spindle bearings. And if nothing else it could weaken the aluminum ears on the spindle.

Thanks for the video. I am rebuilding a similar JD deck but with no welding required. Anyway, can you comment why you added the extra ring? I would think the patch welded to the deck would be nearly as strong as original, and the extra ring would promote rust more quickly.

Because the ring is Tripple the original deck thickness and it’s a more solid long term fix. Don’t leave old grass on your deck and keep it parked inside there won’t be rust issues.

I'm glad you posted these videos. They have been very helpful... especially since John Deere charges $650 for a replacement deck. If I remember correctly, my elderly mom paid $1500 bucks for her LA105. Same summer she paid $1500, I paid $900 and got a cheap Murray from Walmart. The cheap Murray has held up WAY better than the John Deere. I can't believe what junk these decks are on the John Deere. And what kind of paint did they put on these? It's like they didn't use primer and water just sits in the valley with the spindle and the paint goes and the rust sets in. Never again will I ever think of John Deere as a quality machine.

I have got to get one of those "Grease Needles!" I've just been soaking the pulling bearings with oil every so often when they start getting loud. :-\

xFrShizzLEx Grease needle is one of my most used tools. I think I use it every day for something. I put it on a little baby size grease gun and then tapped that little grease gun and added a grease zerk so I can fill it off my big grease gun. I decided to dedicate a grease gun just for the zerk because once you plug the needle in, it's just about impossible to pull it back off the fitting without breaking it. You can get better Precision too with the smaller gun that is more maneuverable. You need to take care not to cut the seals. I use a scribe to move the seal over and open up a little spot to insert the needle. Iv saved a lot of bearings with that thing. Only 6 or 7 $. Best $ you can spend on a tool that pays for itself the first time you use it.

The grease gun in the vid is nice. You can buy similar small grease tools used on bike bearings, but probably harder to come by as the sealed bearings have become very popular.

I like your videos and always pickup something, but in this video I think I would have cut out the complete ring of the spindle mounting surface from the old deck and layered the entire ring on the deck you were repairing. The metal thickness difference for the mounting surface would not make a difference in function.

Gary Molnar I see your point and your probobly correct. Unless the user was very anal about the yard, that would probably do. Only issue is the deck I cut the part from was not the same deck and would not have matched. The shell was completely different. I enjoy the metal craft and like to do a quality repair just to sharpen my skills. Thanks for watching and commenting. I need to get back to making videos. It’s a lot of work and I usually don’t want to take the time but I have a few new tricks Id like to share.
