So a small note about locations. When reading this I made an interpretation that Osiris was somehow back in Sol based on the lines near the end of the card. Namely, that Sagira seems to act like he never left the ship, the fact that Osiris seemed to suddenly teleport back into that ship, the fact that the orientation of the sun was at least somewhat visible where it might be pretty hard to make it out in the belt and that the bold text (which I assume was the ship’s navigation) suddenly read no more obstructions. This could all be wrong. For now, keep an open mind that i gave an interpretation of the location and that I probably should’ve been clearer about that.

Hahaha! Ikr. I’ve compared Eris Morn to the Red Witch. *The night is dark, and full of terrors.* I enjoyed the show, but that ending season. Just why. Let us hope Destiny gives us a purple ship with pyramid gauntlets. And heroes around us guardians, to overcome the impossible.

Judging by Sagira's comment of "I'm glad you changed your mind" it seems like from her perspective Osiris never went into the anomaly at all. My take is that after retrieving the seed time bent and Osiris was sent back to before he entered, that time was altered so that for everyone else he never went in, but he still had the seed and the memories from what happened inside. Furthermore, the way Sagira talks about Saint before they leave Mars makes it sound like this is before he was brought back, because talking about him seems painful for both of them. If this is set before the Season of Dawn and before the Sundial... well that leads to one more interesting mystery. Osiris is very tight lipped about how he made the Sundial work. He mentions that there was a cost associated with it and that it would be dangerous to try what they did to bring Saint back again. When Osiris is building the Sundial he has the Drifter look it over, and the Drifter sees what is in the core and calls him a sicko. If Osiris retrieved the seed before the events of Season of Dawn, it's possible that the seed was "planted" in the core of the Sundial, which is what allowed the machine to rip through time the way it did. I'd love to hear some people's thoughts on this!

Relativity? Space time is relative and bodies of immense mass distort spacetime to near relativistic speeds, making "time" seem to slow to an outside observer of a different frame of relativity. This tracks with the way the Darkness is alleged to impose it's effects, at least to my novice understanding of physics.

To be fair, I wouldn't know how to pronounce that either. I would assume from the spelling that it sounds something like "wort" without the 'w' but according to the wiki, it's the 'ar' in "war" and the 'our' in "tour" which would just sound like "or or" unless I and everyone around me have been mispronouncing one or both of these my entire life...

My thought to what the seed was when I first read it was that it is the catalyst and the birthplace of the black garden and thus the vex. Just like the garden, the seed is described as being both metallic and organic. Plus Osiris is inextricably linked for the vex and it would be a wonderful time travel twist to see Osiris plant the seed of the black garden and the vex.

A husk could be Saavathun. Her character is loosely based off of Mephisto from the Diablo franchise who is also a deceiver and is very skeletal and thin. A throne of sustenance could be Oryx's throne she desires because it's massive. But it also fits very nicely with Calus. Too many vague teases. We need some answers.

That's literally impossible. The seed is one of many artifacts that link back to the traveler as seen with the moon lore book. The darkness also suppresses the light. We would have to lose our ghost and be influenced by the darkness--- chosen by it

Byf, I believe Osiris was the first to have a "Vision of Darkness". We've always had Visions of Light as a way of reflecting on our past to guide our actions into the future as we have seen when we were unlocking our Light powers and subclasses for the first time in Destiny 2. But we never have had the ability to make a physical manifestation of a "future memory" so to speak. Tyra Karn mentions this when we first unlock our Hunter subclasses when she says "It's very simple. You reach into the Void - past visions of your own death and the extinction of life, past fears and nightmares - and take what you find. I don't know why every Hunter doesn't do it." What this implies is that with the power of Light, we are able to reach into PAST memories and pull from it to manifest our powers. Osiris was in a vision of the FUTURE in which he most likely had the closest encounter with a Darkness Anomaly and was able to pull something from the future back to his actual place in time. That seed, in my theory, is the thing that we need to unlock our Darkness abilities.

You might be onto something. Now, I doubt the seed would grant out Darkness powers, but you might have a point about pulling powers through time (or memories from time). Our guardian is the only one able to withstand the Vex, regardless of what their scheme is at the time. Even Atheon, who literally hurled us through time, could not keep us trapped. Maybe it's a pattern with our guardian. Now why us specifically...I have no clue.

I like your idea but the seed seems to spread the vex along the "ground" (saying white liquid calculus bronze gold metal) so maybe the vex were created by the darkness similar to how the traveler creates ghosts. This "Vex seed" could be the reverse of our seeds of light.

Based on the similar wording between "What Gives Me Pause" and "Trials and Tribulations", I've deduced that the seed is Vex-related. The idea of the Dark giving away to calculus and assimilation are both ideas the Vex bring to the table. Not to mention that the use of "metallic seed" in TaT is in direct reference to the Vex, while the "angular shadow" still references the Darkness. I don't think it would actually be of use to us against the Darkness itself. It would seem pretty stupid if it to self-sabotage. It would be better if this thing was something that could help us against another foe. I still think planting it into the Dreaming City would be the best course of action. The Vex would be the first true neutral force, we could beat them easily, and the time loop actively works against their spread, which gives them meaning to remove it. It IS a Vex-based loop, according to Osiris and Shuro Chi. Though ultimately the questions still remain, why would a Pyramid give Osiris anything and why does Mara want it?

quick idea, maybe the darkness isnt as unified as we thought? like some guardian become ''dark guardian'', there might be a faction in the darkness that just want balance or are more light ''friendly'', because right now the darkness wants to bring the death of the univers while the light want an everlasting univers. Lets say that the darkness want to destory the univers is equivalent to ''-1'' and that the light want of everlasting life is ''1'', there might be a darkness and light faction that are equivalent to ''0'' that aknowledge that even without their influence the univers will end

The idea that the "seed" is vex related is so odd to me, seeing as, if it's to be believed, the Traveler "made" the vex to do it's job so the Traveler wouldn't have to. That being said there is tons off lore behind the concepta of light and dark being neutral it's simply the user that creates the "causality", giving it more direct purpose. We removed the "evil" or negative darkness from the Thorn but it's still powered by Darkness but simply a version of it we can control. But to look at another seed, we collected in the past. Seeds of light, but what if what Osiris found is simply a seed of Darkness. Pure, untainted, darkness much like the darkness in motes of Darkness that we collect for the Drifter. In the end, this could be an invaluable object. Of course Mara would want it, what I want to know is how do all of these different characters know about it and what is Osiris going to do with it? Plant it where?

@@astromac13 My main thought line that comes up with where he is going to "plant" the seed would be to go with what you're saying. Where did we plant the seeds of light we gathered? Eris has the new abilities after interacting with a similar object to what I'm guessing is described here unless I'm mistaken. So perhaps Osiris will be the next we see with these darker abilities being used?

Oort isn’t an acronym, it’s a word. The Oort cloud is a mass of icy bodies and planetoids beyond the heliopause, significantly further from the sun than the Kuiper belt. Wikipedia says that Voyager 1 will reach it in about 300 years if that gives you any idea of how far it is and how massive

Oh my god, a particular line from CoO has always been burning in the back of my mind and this might be the perfect place to bring it into the spotlight. When we run through A Garden World after the CoO campaign and we have our Ghost with us, he describes what it was like to be “asleep” while Sagira was borrowing his shell. He says “The Traveler was there, and it was so small.” I believe this could very well be another reference to the visions of the “white osseous point” surrounded by pure nothingness. “Osseous” is an interesting word to choose here since it means “composed of, containing, or resembling bone.” I believe it’s referring to the color/texture of the “point.” If this is indeed the case, then hear me out: The Traveler is a sphere, which is how we typically represent “points” in 3-dimensional space (and we represent them as spheres despite them being infinitesimally small, and Ghost emphasizes how small the Traveler was in his vision) and it is also “osseous” in the sense that it is bone-white in color and has surface imperfections, much like an actual bone. Not to mention, the current state of Destiny’s story seems to represent the Traveler, Guardians, Sol, and Earth as a sort of “final beacon/bastion of Light in a universe of Darkness” which correlates to that visual metaphor of the “point” quite well. This comment is rather late but I hope Byf sees this and considers this if he hasn’t already himself!

At 4:30 , Kuiper-Oort is actually the name of the two asteroid clouds at the very edge of the solar system. It’s not O-O-R-T, but rather a name; Oort.

One thought as well, regarding how Osiris suddenly went from the outer reaches of space to the sun: that jarring "cut" at the end of Shadowkeep does bring us from inside the pyramid right back into the sanctuary, which is sort of where we "start" that mission. Not sure what this means, but I thought there might be a connection

I dont extensively know the lore, but could this be the same place that our Ghost went during Curse of Osiris when Sagira took over? I recall a line from one of the strikes where Ghost says something about being surrounded by darkness, and the traveler was there but so small. Could we be planting a new Traveler?

This idea would then open another possibility: what if the Traveller has never actually ran away? What if it's new shell has ran while leaving the old one behind each time, which the Darkness would then destroy... or assimilate, which would explain the numerous Pyramid ships.

The pin prick of light surrounded in a sea of darkness sounds like a metaphor for the Traveller (the lone being of Light) surrounded by the Darkness ships. Osiris reaching in and pulling out the Seed also sounds like a metaphor for Guardians. From our dark age we found a small light within ourselves and cultivated it into what we are today. We are the Seed. We are malleable by Light and Dark and the decisions we make in the next few weeks during the Season of Arrivals will define who we become. If the original tree was in the Black Garden, I think it was consumed by Darkness. That's why I think the Gardener was desperately trying to save it from the weeds, always hunched over, tending to it. Whereas the new Seed we found on Io was cultivated in the Traveller's seat and grown in Light. We are the Gardener to this Seed...and the Seed is a metaphor for us. We are our own Gardener, and we must grow and cultivate our own fates. This theory reinforces why The Nine don't pass judgment on Dark or Light. They're just two equal and opposite forces pulling on a string with a knot in the middle (the universe). No matter who pulls harder, the knot gets tighter. But within this knot, this universe, we must pave our own path. Our own Destiny.

This is yet another reason why you are one of the most well known Lore Masters. Well done Byf, well done.

All this stuff going on with the darkness and I’m hear still sad that we won’t be able to fight the god fight with our favorite exo space cowboy.

Its a baby Traveler thats my thoughts

Since the seed was seemingly plucked from a place of the darkness I can't help but feel it's yet another hint towards our guardians wielding the darkness. Perhaps Osiris can plant that seed in a place that would allow us to tap into the power without suffering the risk of corruption.

Your voice is very late-night calming. I enjoy listening to this stuff while laying in bed, it’s a nice end to my day and it’s awesome to learn about how Bungie is putting so much effort into this story.

I just have to applaud the lore writers, great great great craftmanship writing these themes and imaging and giving it sustenance while having flavor and actual lore AND (if it’s calculated) giving the lore personality that can be derived to other different contexts. Just great all around! My most humble appreciation for the writers and I hope I get to listen to it all from the voice of Byf!

These people are excusing destroying lives and killing more people, all in Floyd's name. So byf the seed... think of the shard and how it relates to the light... its a piece of the traveler but is still able to be corrupted by darkness. What if we are to plant the seed to make a shard of darkness that we can then corrupt or better yet purify with light. And by purifying it enough we can get our 4th sub class which is the darkness sub class but a darkness that can't taint or corrupt us. Or atleast as fast as a pure darkness. Which we will learn to use to defeat the darkness

Byf I've felt more emotions listening to you read lore than actually playing the game,except when Cayden died but still you're work is amazing keep it up after you become a doctor or whatever you're graduating with.

I like to think that the part where Osiris is suddenly back near the sun for no reason is a reference to the end of Shadowkeep where we are just booted back to sanctuary after the ending cutscene without any context.

That last mention of the Seed being a single prick of light in an all consuming darkness got my theory crafting brain spinning. What if the seed is a Traveller? Like, a baby one? Our Traveller is certainly in a pretty bad shape. It's damaged, old, and probably about to be hit by the Almighty. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that we are about to lose our only real power. What if by Vance/Mara telling Osiris to plant the seed, they are saying to basically grow a new Traveller? One that can either help our current one, or replace it, so we can fight back against the darkness? Visions often relate to the Traveller, as we have experienced ourselves, and for Osiris to have visions of this seed for so long, it must be of incredible importance. I don't think we have anything that says there can only be one Traveller. That's just all we've known. What if the Darkness have been using these baby traveller seeds as a fuel source, or food? Everywhere the Traveller goes, it tries to reproduce/copy itself, and we only have one because the Darkness keeps eating the babies? Speaking of eating babies, maybe this seed is the one the Traveller tried to plant at the Eliksni homeworld, and this is the segway into getting Mitthraxx and the house of light the power of the Light? I dunno. Lore is fun to think about

Bungie’s writers are clearly versatile and educated. One can find poetic verse, letters, nonlinear narrative, stream of consciousness, technical logs, and countless other unique forms of storytelling in the lore books alone. It adds a lot to these books and challenges your brain.

When he referenced the mara and brother vance conversation, I've been so conditioned by other KZreadrs that I could already hear the "you'll have to watch my other videos if you wanna find out" bullshit but then you totally proved me wrong and was a cool guy about it and I have immense respect for that and you. Keep it up❤

since being locked up at home the last couple months ive been studying Astrophysics, and i gotta say since ive been learning more and more, im getting and even bigger hard on for the story of destiny. I dont wanna start rambling but from someone very very new in astrophysics everything in destiny "makes sense" in a way and the more i uncover the better both get

Watching this for the first time today and looking at the seed in my inventory with a lot more interest...

When the seed was mentioned, it reminded me of a pair of d1 titan exotic gauntlets "Ruin Wings" which also mentions the seed, "In the Garden grows a tree of silver wings. The leaves are ruin, the back disaster. Of the seeds we do not speak." This tree and it's seeds are also briefly mentioned in the Unveilling lore book, specifically in the entries 'Gardener and Winnower' and 'T = 0'. I want to focus more so on T = 0 as the other entry just mentions blooming, bearing fruit, shedding "feathers" and blooming again. In T = 0 it says "And still we fought. We brought down the tree of silver wings and left the stump to smoke amid the meadows", and beforehand, "We stomped the fruit to pulp, and we ground the seeds into the dust". Since Osiris took this seed from the darkness, whether it is from a pyramid ship or just from the paracausal gravitational well of dark he ventured into, could this 'seed' be a physical representation of the seeds in the 'garden' mentioned in the Unveilling lore book? (A representation as it is said to us that the Garden was a kind of pre-reality, not that we can trust the darkness but I think it's worth saying just in case). With the seeds being considered not safe to talk about in the Ruin Wings flavour text and with the worm gods being mentioned in the Unveiling in passing like the seeds are in that lore book also, this is definitely a very powerful, or at least ancient and important, artefact. I know this doesn't add much to what Byf has said, but I figured I'd dig into it after remembering about the Ruin Wings.

When titles were first revealed and we saw chronicler as an option me and my friend both agreed it would be the one we went for first. Took about a year but I got it

Honestly one of the things that amazes me about you is your capacity to recall some of the super earlier entries in the series. We're talking a few words or passages that might have been read sometime back in D1 and are now being referenced after all these years.

I'm really glad that you read and explained this. When I first read it, I somehow thought that Osiris had found a massive creature hidden just on the other side of Sol. Looks like I was waaay off 😅

This guy is the best Destiny storyteller I ever seen I've been watching him since Destiny 1

We have seen twice now that the Darkness can suppress the Light, first with our Ghost, second with Sagira (maybe also on that icy planet the Drifter was on for a while?). Not only that, the location that Osiris retrieved the seed from was itself suppressing Sagira's Light. So the big question for me is this: why was the seed, which was if not made of Light at least connected to the Light, not suppressed by its surroundings too? The answer to this, in my mind, is that it is a seed that can grow into something of such strength in the Light that it cannot be suppressed by the Darkness, that has the potential to fight against it. Something like, perhaps, the Traveler?

I have this mental image of Byf as this Warlock that stands in the Tower and holding a cardboard sign that says “The End is Nigh” while yelling about the Darkness.

I just remembered something. In the strike "A Garden World", there is a dialogue between our Ghost and Sagira, in which our Ghost describes how it was like when he was asleep: " And I saw things in the dark. The Traveler was there. And it was so small." Maybe this "Point" is the Traveler, far far away, drenched in Darkness...

I have no way to connecting this to anything, but i suddenly cant stop thinking about it: "In the *Garden* grows a tree of silver wings. The leaves are ruin, the bark disaster. Of the *seeds* we do not speak." -Is the quote for Ruin Wings, the exotic from Destiny one.

That Statue in the Pyramid Ships it reminds me of "Nyx the Goddess of the Night" the way Nyx is being described is very similar to how we are being introduced to the Statue, ambience wise. The Seeds could represent the three faiths and could be a way to revive the Goddess, the Pyramid Ships might just be her pawns carrying out her orders again all just speculations.

I noticed how when it says The Deep that the Deep is capitalized. Rmeminds me of the Deep on Fundamnet. Also lots of mentions of drifting. Remember in the whisper mission how Xol said, "you shall drift"?

I think instead of teleporting it’s more so that Osiris experienced some kind of gravitational time dilation as he traversed through the anomaly. Sagira states “I’m glad you changed your mind” because she never actually sees him enter the anomaly, the same way an outside observer never sees an object crossing the event horizon of a black hole, it’ll just sit there forever. From her point of view, he left, reached the event horizon then turned around and came right back, meanwhile he was able to have this whole adventure because for him time was moving at a different speed. Kind of similar to the time trap on the Almighty you talked about a little while back, but in reverse and not as severe, if that makes any sense. I love your work dude, keep it up!

Just a few thoughts on revisiting a few points from earlier pieces of lore: 1) During A Garden World strike, when Sagira claims that your Ghost was asleep, he says, "I saw things in the dark. The Traveler was there. And it was so small." This sounds very similar to Osiris's visions: a tiny spark of Light nestled within the deep, dark abyss that is supposedly the Darkness. "Dead" or Lightless Ghosts could experience this vision, lost in the Deep. 2) In Ghost Fragment: The Traveler 3 (yeup, from the ol' Destiny 1 Grimoire), it talks about how a knife had "a million blades" and how it tore its godly flesh away. These could very well be the Darkness, or more specifically the tons of Pyramid ships yeeting towards us now. The Traveler mentions that it feels insignificant, despite the remainder of its shell, and implies that the knife stole something much more valuable - with the remaining tad bit of its soul and body in tatters. This COULD be the Seed, a crucial part to the Traveler's "self" that the Darkness stole and possibly key to its full reawakening. 3) The Dark Forest is the pseudo Lost Sector where we Guardians (re)obtained our subclasses. Alluding the symbolism of trees and growth (minus the creepy vibe, which could be from tainted Light), the Seed could in fact lead to us having new powers. It could also be the key to re-Lighting the Dark Forest and return the Shard back to the Traveler, just as we did with the tiny shard stolen by the Hive in the Chamber of Night mission back during Destiny 1. All of this is speculation and attempts to connect the lore. Whether the Seed is an essential part of the Traveler, or a trojan from the Darkness, I guess they'll soon have time to explain.

The anomaly he got it from was described like how one would describe staring into a black hole. Really makes you wonder what it was doing where it could be described as something like that.

Something that I couldn’t help but notice was the frequency of the word Drift in this lore. Last night I was playing the Heroic Whisper of the Worm mission to farm kills in the thrall room for the Graviton Lace’s Catalyst and hearing the line “You Shall Drift” by everyone’s favorite worm god before I got there. I wonder if “Drift”ing has something to do exclusively with the Darkness. I don’t remember ever really hearing outside of that mission and the story mission where you confront him below Mars. I wonder what the connection is (Aside from the endless Tokyo Drift and Initial D jokes that I can only think of right now)?

Holy shit I asked this question on Reddit yesterday and asked if it was because of Osiris knowing what happened to the Iron Lords. It’s as if Byf saw my post and just answered it!!!

Not to mention the constant references to a silver tree in a garden. Feels very close to the white tree of minas tirith. I know its a stretch but I like it.

There is the anomaly that you mentioned quite a while ago which is where the nine tried to enter our dimension/universe/whatever. It seems quite similar to how this is right now

I just had the craziest revelation! The squares refer to causal stuff, versus the Pyramids’ and Traveler’s triangles and sphere!

Byf, I just thought of something. When Sagira hijacked our ghost, there is dialogue in one of the strikes on Mercury, where our ghost describes how he saw the traveler and it was so small... Perhaps something there?

Hi Byf, you rock. I believe the seed is the source of Darkness champion's power, linked to gravity. A singularity able to create throne world, and to destroy present universe. When Mara Sav says Osiris 'plant the seed', i take it "deploy the trap". And... Maybe with our help/sacrifice, we'll use that power against pyramids

The seed is from the tree of silver wings that grew in the black garden mentioned on D1 exotic ruin wings. Mk. 44 stand asides also mention it.

The only seed that comes to mind are the seeds of light which we used to unlock new subclasses. I wonder if this is a seed of light that has absorbed some of the darkness power giving it that metal look. Anyway great video!

If you think about it Byf, when we collected the mysterious artifact within the pyramid we were also seamlessly transported possibly to the Black Garden then to Luna. It's possible the same occurred with Osiris, if so, then he, his ship and Sagira may not have traveled back to Sol themselves...

So as others have said, Oort is a name and refers to a region called the Oort cloud which is a spherical region of icy debris believed to start around 2,000 AU from the Sun (for reference the main body of the Kuiper belt ends at around 55 AU, with the scattered disk reaching out to 1,000 AU - the Heliopause itself being around 121 AU, although this varies). As far as Osiris ending up back at the ship, I don't think the whole ship is transported - only Osiris. You can still see the Sun from the heliopause, and the use of Kuiper slingshot suggests that they're still beyond the Kuiper belt at that point.

Byf, he didn't go back near Sol. He was back in his ship near the anomaly, and it looks like from Sagira's point of view, he listened to her warnings and never left. You can tell this because it mentions Sol as distant and the shadow of the anomaly covering his ship.

@Byf From my reading of all the text what it sounds like to me is this: Osiris is at a Rasputin bunker of some sort, possibly mars or other planet, not really important other than Ana Bray and Sant-14 seem to be there on the planet. Osiris sees an anomaly indicator at the edge of our solar system within the bunker that Rasputin is tracking and flies out there. The kuiper-oort area is the very edge of our solar system. The oort cloud is far outside the kuiper belt, so this seems to say the anomaly is anywhere between these two regions, which is actually a very large area of space. There, Osiris sees a sort of gravitational anomaly of some kind. The way it is described in the text, this sounds similar to a wormhole. However, instead of a more typical wormhole like we would think of, where it would link our point in space to somewhere else in the universe while being within "our space", the way it is described almost seems to be like it is an entry/exit point into "the Deep". The lore says Osiris puts on a helmet, so he is basically in a spacesuit, and exits the ship, gliding toward the anomaly. Whether this is a wormhole type thing or a breach point into the Deep, it makes sense that Osiris would be able to enter it just fine. The way the space inside the anomaly is described definitely makes it sound like the Deep. Inside, Osiris found this metal "seed", and then he was able to turn around and exit the anomaly. There really doesnt seem like anything weird going on here. Osiris doesnt seem to have gone very far into the Deep before finding this seed. Before he went in, Osiris tried making those copies of himself, but that seems to have failed within the anomaly which is why he ended up going in. As for after he got out, Osiris was not at all teleported to the inner area of the solar system. The text doesnt say anything like that. It says "The Sun hand dim and distance in a sea of ink". That far away, the sun would be quite small and dim, yet still much larger and brighter than any other star in the galaxy given that Osiris would be infinitely closer to our sun than even the next closest star. You would be able to tell just fine it is out sun. A theory I have regarding this anomaly that seems to be described as a sort of breach point for the Deep, connecting our solar system to it; It is possible that this is the point the pyramid ships arrive from. When we first saw the ships and how far away they are after the Red War, they would either have to travel insanely fast to get to our solar system, which then doesnt make perfect sense that they take 3 months to get from the outer reaches to just barely Jupiter/Saturn (depending on whether you are going by the new cutscene or Rasputins tracking wall). However, it would make more sense if instead of being able to travel insanely fast in a "hyperspace" sort of mode, these pyramid ships instead were able to enter a different breach point into the Deep where they were all far away at the Red War, and now after travelling through the Deep, they are exiting at this "anomaly"/breach point within our solar system. This would fit with the speed we see out of the ships and with this odd anomaly out at the edge of our system.

If you watch the video with Cayde's cut dialogue, at one point he talks about a report he read of a guardian finding some kind of creature at the edge of the system. I saw that today and I immediately thought of this. "Get a load of this report I read last week: kid detected a huge free floating mass on the edge of the system. He approached and the thing moved. Tentacles, beaks, all kinds of things. Went jetting off into the Kuiper Belt faster than he could follow. Damndest thing, right?"

The seed is probably like the ones the vex used to terraform mercury, but one that is filled with light
