Do you run Weber Carburetors or D-Jetronic EFI? On one hand, modern gas in the USA is full of ethanol, and that’s an issue in hot, dry climates. On the other hand, D-Jetronic is a pain to deal with, unreliable, and difficult to find available service for.

As a child in San Francisco in the late 60's, you literally could stand at any point in the city where cars were parked and not see at least one VW.

this beetle is obviously tweaked quite a bit….not hard to do with carbs, headers (extractors) besides upping it from 1600cc…..and Bill mentions it’s a crate motor….so it’s likely bigger than 1600cc plus looks like a bigger carb plus larger ports etc.

No AC isn't really a loss - my friend's dad had a Super Beetle with air conditioning brand new in the 70's. It still had NO air conditioning, essentially, at least not by south Florida standards.

They didn't have good heat either. My dad had a 1970 and it lasted a long time with little maint. Basically beat to crap and kept going.

Wow, Bill you gave a lot of interesting info as to why the Beetle was created (1/50 car ownership) and designed (anti-freeze was expensive).

My dad had a beige '73 Super Beetle when I was a kid, I remember it well. In the '80s when I was a teenager there were tons and tons of old VW bugs still running around in my area, and then at some point in the '90s it's like they disappeared en masse. Now I hardly ever see old Type 1's on the road.

And the disappointment they would feel as the new one never lives up to its expectations. Or gets that first dent or scratch. For the same reason I would never buy new. There are fab cars out there for a fraction of the price.

I had a '73 Super Beetle in baby blue. Loved it. Great on gas. This was a trip back, thanks Bill.

The last time I heard the phrase, "Ass-engined Nazi slotcar" was in an old Car & Driver (I think? maybe it was Road & Track) article comparing the Porsche 911 to the Ferrari 308.

Good Morning Bill, great to hear from you again!

I'll have to say that I learned something really new from this video. I didn't know that the real ideas behind the Beetle didn't come from Ferdinand Porsche. But then, Small Wonder, which is the one book I have about the Beetle tells a somewhat sanitized version of the Volkswagen story. The only new car that my dad ever bought was a Beetle. He had a dark blue '68. My parents didn't strike me as being particularly counterculture, even if he bought my mom Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida for Christmas one year. Apparently they couldn't get a Valiant, Nova or even a Rambler American at a price that worked for them. I learned to drive a manual transmission on it. During my first attempt at college, I had my first car accident in it. I backed out of the throttle mid corner, and couldn't handle what the swing axles did next. It fishtailed three or four times, went sideways into a small ditch, and fell on its side. After some people helped me get it back on all fours, I drove it home before the cops could appear, by which point I was probably already home. It had a small dent in the rear fender, and some oil leaked out. That was all. Before that, we experienced a couple of trips to Rhode Island in it, which prompted my parents to finally buy something bigger, in the form of a Dodge van, for family use. My knees were probably digging into his back the entire trip, so I'm sure your Canadians would not be amused. My dad's Beetle ownership is a large part of the reason for my keen interest as a teenager in...Imperials.

You could not hurt the bug engine. They were indestructible. They ran out out of breath so you couldn't over rev them. Had a 64 without the gas gauge. Top speed was 60 something. It was the anti sports car, anti muscle car. Loved it, but slow, oh so slow. Sundial slow....My sister had a Datsun B210 with the 2 speed toyoglide. We raced the 1/4 mile. We raced at sunup so we could finish by sundown....

Thanks Bill for the review. From an engineering perspective the car was quite dismissive of the important laws of physics such as polar moment of inertia and angular momentum resulting in quite alarming handling characteristics but still managed to be the most produced car in automotive history.

Bill’s car videos are like an event, I can only image what his political discussions would be like. I would definitely tune in! My second car was a 71 Super Beetle that I paid 400 dollar for. The car was no where near the condition of the one in this video, but I wish I had the car today because I’d take the whole thing apart and restore it. Man I froze my ass off in that car in the Pennsylvania winters I drove it in!

I'm still trying to figure out why my beetle has a "terrible" or "awkward" history...its just history and I mean the reasonings behind its creation are probably about the best I've seen and the design still rivals cars today as my 77 standard gets better gas mileage than just about any new car other than the Prius

I had two of these. A 1967 and a 71 or 72. Fun car but constant breakdowns... the good thing was there was lots of old hippies who liked to work on them in the 80s and early 90s and they were reasonably priced. Mileage was never that great either.

The Love Bug was my favorite childhood movie, and according to Dean Jones, was the last movie with any of Walt Disney's personal touch. However, I have read the Germans associate the Beetle with the austerity of the 50's and aren't that crazy about it.

There is in Germany a market for them with high prices, the most popular are the cabriolet models wich are used as fun car during the summer months with a seasonal registration and insurance.

Love the channel,the weather report and Bill. I binge watch this channel. Bill reviews cars I have owned and cars I grew up with. I own a 2020 Jetta. It is my 3rd Jetta. My parents owned VW Beetles. I remember going to get groceries in our blue Beetle and filling the car up with 5 of us in the car!! Yes, 5! Although two of us were kids. Love VW!

Me too even though they do fall apart. BUT, my 06 Jetta 2.5L w/ 5 spd manual WAS MY FAVORITE car. Lasted me until 2017 and sold for a decent price with 217,000 miles, it’s the only new off the lot car I’ve owned since starting to drive many years ago. Most those issues occurred before 100k miles. I just totaled my 06 Jetta TDi that had 183,000 miles, and my 14’ Passat TDI running decently (after fuel pump, water pump, second heater core, DEF heater, sway bar and AC compressor were all just replaced--under warranty of course!) But they drive nice and until recently most VW designs age nicely.

This is a really nice example! I love the headlights with the integrated turn signals! Really smooths out the look!👍

There is an aftermarket company that makes heating and cooling units for the VW Beetle, Karmingia and van. They are 12"inch long cylinders that are 5" in diameter. You mount one on the passenger door window and then roll it up. So it looks like a small section of pipe with a black gasket like sleeve from the back covering the remaining opening at the top of the window. The unit plugs into your cigarette lighter port to drive a fan pulling air in both while you are sitting at stop lights as well as boosting the air coming in while driving. It also drives a circulating pump on the cool unit. Air passing into the front as you drive goes over a series of hot electric coils or hollow coils with water ciculating. In the cold unit an endothermic reaction will happen in the coils the air passed over. You have to fill a port with water and a second with 1 Lbs of ammonium chloride (purchased online for about $7). The cold unit needs refilled about every 10 to 20 hours of use.

1974 my Dad bought a VW grasshopper, for $2000. Engine in the back, plus a trunk in the back & front. It was fun and I learned how to drive a manual, with it. It was so fun. The window washers were powered of the spare tire, in the front. hilarious

Dad had two of these Bugs, a '71 and a '73--both rust buckets, but the one '73 had a soft sunroof (Dad was not a sunroof guy). Early '80s, I remember the five of us, parents and three pre-teen kids, cramming into the '73, Dad pops open the sunroof, and we all went on a picnic at our local scenic metro park. That was a great day ripped right out of the 'perfect' storybook. Could have been a Beetle advertisement. Man, what an enjoyable little deathtrap, that four wheeled shitbox.

Nice walk down memory lane. My Dad had three Beetles during the 70s, one being a Super Beetle that had a stinger exhaust. I always loved how they sounded. It's difficult to discuss modern German industrial history without mentioning Hitler and the Nazis. There are a surprising number of well-known German companies that were involved with the Nazis and the use of slave labor. The People's Car indeed.

My dad has a taxi yellow 69’ convertible that he built and it has been in the same 4th of July parade every year of my life. Irony at its finest!

80+ MPH in a Beetle? Didn't think those went that fast! Obviously the engine in this is much better than stock. Neat car. My dad had two Beetles, 67 and 71. I have picture of me by the 71 but don't remember actually riding in it, was too young.

Sure a beetle from 1966-up would hit 80mph plus (us models). A late model with the stick 1600 would have no trouble exceeding that.

The Beetle, while making only several short appearances in the film, figures prominently as a symbol of character type to Richard Dreyfus’ character in one of my favorite movies, Tin Men.

I thought Bill would completely loose it when they glove box came open. I was waiting for him to pull out his 357 out the back seat.

My father had a 67 and he drove that car all over the place. Had the roof rack on it and as a family the 4 of us drove to New England and climbed Mt Washington in it. He also had a 76 Gold Bug and my sister had a 69 which she totaled and then replaced it with a 73 Sport Bug in Yellow. Great memories with those cars!!

My Dad was something of a greaser in the 50's, not the gang type but the stoplight drag version. Modified engines, blew them up, scrambled transmissions, but apparently a good driver. Spent all his limited money on cars and fines. Eventually he pretty much couldn't afford to drive - or soon wouldn't be allowed to - and in a measure of self-discipline (or his future wife's strong encouragement) he turned to Beetles. Used at first. There 4 maybe 5, starting with I think a 52 up through 62 - after which they moved to FL and needed a car with AC - which became a 64 Rambler. Always said the Beetles were incredibly solid, well built, 'engineered' better than any subsequent American car. Thereafter, except for a 69 Torino with the hot 351, everything was sedate - until success and midlife brought a whole slew of German sedans - all of them performance models capable of and driven at speeds that one doesn't cop to in front of Mother. Both kids, now adults, have continued that tradition. In a way the German antidote to speed became in some small measure, its cause.

As a transplanted Floridian I say any summer day is a good day, as long as there isn't a hurricane. I went through 2 weeks without power once and I don't really want to repeat the experience. This video was fascinating. I was especially interested to hear about various countries' attitudes toward the Beetle. It explains James May's attitude toward the car in his recent video on the (Meyers Manx) dune buggy, which kind of shocked me - how can anyone not love this car? Now I know.

Previous owner also shaved the front turn signals from the fenders, cool mod!

My cousin used to be a VW dealer back in the 70’s to mid 80’s. I was just a kid but got to ride in one of these and many other models at the time. Most fondly I remember the yellow Scirocco he had. I think if you can get hold of a nice Scirccco, that would be a great review which should attract a lot of views. There seems to be collector interest in fine examples.

My single mom had a ghia when I was a kid, that was our family car (we were very poor). My 2 brothers and I all grew up to be over 6 ft. Tall, so it’s hard to believe we all used to fit in that thing. I remember the pathetic little electric heater that came with it... LOL

I owned a 1962 Ghia,,,1200cc 40hp,,,as a first-wave Boomer, I can assure you that many of my generation owned at least one VW, usually an older bug...the thing about those cars--they were easy to work on, and kind of indestructible...Case in point, a buddy of mind rolled his bug down a hillside...he had used a lapbelt, fortunately...after the tow truck winched the car back onto the road, my friend jumped back in, fired that sucker up, and it drove just fine!...a few little dents here and there...no mechanical damage...of course, no other cars offered 25-30mpg, and that in itself was a major draw for aspiring, money-strapped students, hippies, etc.,,,but it is now strange to realize now, just how unsafe in general those cars were!...I mean, you were cruising around with a gas tank tank almost in your lap...and the earlier models were referred to as being "leg-cutters" by the State Patrol--as they would see, in serious collisions, that the entire dashboard section of the bug would break off, and move downward, causing serious/fatal injury to the front passengers...such things as safety were simply not thought of, back then. I would never own one nowadays!

I don't think the Beetle engine was powerful enough to motivate the car and an A/C compressor at the same time.

A/c has been an option on these since the 1960s. Modern a/c kits on these work very well and take only 1-2hp.

Tbh. I watch Bills videos. The first 1:42 minutes always make me laugh. His honesty. I would say the exact same thing. I flipping HATE HUMIDITY !

I remember riding home after T Ball practice in the back of a neighbor's Beetle in the humid Chicago summer circa 1972. No AC, no breeze. Sheer torture. Maybe only the back of a Ford Pinto would beat the agony. It was cute though.

Owned one when I lived in Mexico. They called them Volchos. In Brazil, they were called Fuscas.

There were a couple of improvements to the Beetle in 1972. As Bill noted, one was the use of dual port cylinder heads that improved air flow and therefore power. The hot setup was dual 2-barrel carbs, one for each head. Holley made a model called the "Bug Spray" for this application. The second , equally if not more important, was the use of double jointed rear axles, instead of swing axles with a single joint that the differential. This reduced rear wheel camber change as the car leaned in a turn, resulting in much more forgiving handling. Even so, all of the Beetles had trailing throttle oversteer; you did not want to brake hard while doing a turn. BTW, I don't believe that speedo at all.I suspect the aftermarket wheels on Bill's car are smaller in diameter than the stock wheels, inflating the speed readings. A stock Beetle would be hard-pressed to exceed 70 mph.

The 1302 (Superbeetle 1 in America, I believe) should have the modern rear axle (semi-trailing axle). instead of the swing axle of the older models. Together with the ugly 1303 (curved front screen, Superbeetle 2) it had the most advanced chassis - not of the beetles alone but (at that time) of almost all cars. Of course, of works it had never the power to use this formidable undercarriage. Sigh. I love the EMPI wheels, btw. And the front lights with enclosed blinkers - which you did not mention, they are custom.

Actually I much prefer the styling of the 1303 - the REAL Super Beetle with all of the improvements. The 1972 was only halfway there.

After 2 weeks of ownership, the electronic fuel injectors / fuel pump assembly stuck open and filled the cylinders with fuel. Hence, the engine would not turn over. It was flat bedded to the selling dealership and repaired. I never had another issue with the car.

34:50 I've heard that the Super Beetle was the first VW specifically designed for the installation of AC, despite the fact that it had been installed in previous models, one way or another, for years. Those vents behind the front bumper were for the condenser core.

oh, what you have there is a "SUPER BEETLE", the year is '71, or '72, mine was a '73 , it had a curved windshield, and an actual DASH board, not just "FLAT" like the original bug

And 73 was the first year for those big round tail lights.

My memory of the Beetle is Ruth Gordon ripping around in it in, " Harold and Maud ".
