Designing Motherhood | Virtual Tour
Designing Motherhood was on display at the Mütter Museum from May 2021 through May 2022. Although the exhibit is no longer up, you can still enjoy it in this comprehensive virtual tour with our very own curator, Anna Dhody, and Gabriella Nelson from the Maternity Care Coalition!
About the exhibit:
While being born is a universal human experience, the designs that shape it are not. Many remain taboo, rarely considered, and inaccessible to many. Designing Motherhood invites you to consider why and how we have developed designs to facilitate reproductive health, and to ponder the political, economic, and social implications of how we medicalize reproduction.

This exhibition was organized as a collaboration between the Designing Motherhood curatorial team, the Mütter Museum, and thought leaders Maternity Care Coalition, a direct-service organization that ensures families can birth with dignity, parent with autonomy, and raise babies who are healthy, growing, and thriving.

This is an absolutely wonderful, nuanced, rich exhibit that puts me in awe of the people who traditionally held and still hold knowledge of preventing pregnancy, being pregnant, giving birth, and parenthood. I'm in awe, but simultaneously I'm exhausted by the country I live in and its lack of care and, at times, what seems like outright violence and maliciousness against people who can give birth. Wonderful exhibit. Thank you for posting it!
Wow this exhibit is so well done. Thank you for the virtual tour!
Fascinating! A hearty salute to great mothers everywhere 🫡 💜
This was a wonderful video. Thank you for covering a part of history that isn't discussed enough and has affected every human throughout history.
omg this museum is on my top ten list. happy mothers day!!

@Karyn G It's sad I don't live up north, but I do have family up there, so next time I'll visit I'll have to go!
Great start! Now bring back the rest of the online content :)
Thank you! Yes, I LOVE new content from the Mutter. I've only been there twice, and it wasn't long enough to absorb all the information. Already subscribed!
Thank you for such a wonderful tour. So far and so far to go...
What a great presentation! Thanks for uploading!
Wonderful exhibits, thank you! On day, I've promised I'm going to get to the Mutter Museum! The way that you've handled the Flue Epidemic, and this exhibition is so inspiring. I love the ways you combine artworks as well as the science history into a cohesive whole with sensitivity. Even if the Forceps made me wince a bit!
Glad to see a new post... appropriate for the holiday too.
This exhibit is incredibly fascinating. Horrifying at times...but definitely fascinating!!
So cool! I can immediately love and appreciate almost any work or effort that promotes reexamination of old ideas, and attempts to foster new perspectives. I do have one criticism of the video, I found the messaging very difficult to fully understand. Perhaps this is merely because I’m very much an “outsider” with respect to the subject matter. (I’m a middle-aged, gay, cis-male; it’s safe to say my familiarity with motherhood is entirely peripheral.) Nonetheless, I’m confident in calling myself intellectually astute and an interested party still even after repeated viewings I’m not at all confident in my comprehension of what was said. I’ve little doubt that it was written with great passion and deep understanding of the polysocial dynamics of motherhood, as well as the associated misconceptions, stigmas, disparate viewpoints and their impact on the zeitgeist; but it sounded more like college thesis on a subject I was wholly unfamiliar rather than an enlightening introduction.
Such a good video. 😀
Literally watching while I pump!
This was fascinating! Well done and incredibly sensitive.
So interesting! Thank you!
Neat!
Comment for the algorithm.
It's saddening that giving birth could still let to death
Come here little algorithm, we have candy…
the pacifiers in lead and glass
Men have no idea! 🤐😫
why the masks? I get the dust and such part but that is weird to wear for a video.

Fully agree! It is absolutely weird in May of 2023!
The video was nice. But it's a shame the word "woman" wasn't mentioned once in a video like this.

Agree. It's ridiculous!
birthing person. Giving birth is 💯 percent female
