Designing, Building and Testing My Folded Horn Subwoofer
Музыка
Designing a folded horn sub woofer in Google Sketch-up, and then making it come to life! Trying the best I could to keep costs down, the parts were cheap or free (the 10" sub) and only cost around $20. If there is enough interest, I can post a video of it going so you can hear it. I would just have to find music KZread won't complain about.

WOW! That sounded great!
I'll have to watch this in a bit. Once upon a time, I worked for Paul Klipsch. Great man...
Nice looking box Sir. i love "at the dance drying". Reminds me of years ago....stacking the new Rig at a venue and the 'boys' painting the bits you could see on site, whilst me an my Bro' finished soldering the stage box for the mic lines. The Bravado of Youth. Never ever give in Buddy !
it sounded really good.
That's a nice Horn, I like those leftover builds... :)
awesome build.
That's tight! It looks good!
Heck yeah anywhere I can find how to spec a box like this?
good job
I'm looking to build one myself, how did you design it? as in, how did you determine where to mount the speaker, where to put the wood to channel the sound to the throat? did you follow any theories?

I did some research online and went with a design that I thought looked nice and wouldn't be too difficult to build. I used a picture of one, and mocked it up in google sketch up. A lot of the designs had the speaker on the top, but it doesn't have to be there. I saw several that looked like they were on their "side."
Nice little build U have there, Anyway you can re-up the sketchup file? The link in ur descript isn't working. Thanks :)
I'm wanting to do this with three 12-in stereo integrity SQL 12
does the door seal well enough? or did you sim it expecting the box to be a bit lossy?
@BudgetNerd

The door seals well, no rattling. I'm not sure it's perfectly air tight though. I do want to do a bit more work on it.
Hey Quick Question: when you said you made sure the enclosure was within the volume of the speaker. Is that the space behind the woofer or is that including the front horn setup as well?
@BudgetNerd
9 жыл бұрын
That was referring to the part where the sub woofer was. Not the whole box.
how do you remove the speakers? its screwed from the inside
@BudgetNerd

that would be something I would change in sub 2.0. hopefully I never need to change it. haven't yet.
I think the manufacturer recomended box volume does not apply to folded horns
How did you plan the horn fold dimensions to get the sound curve right?
@BudgetNerd
8 жыл бұрын
Well, to be honest, I didn't. I just went with what I thought would look right. Sort of backwards thinking, I know, but it was just a weekend project. I never got too technical with it.
Nice build but I have to ask, why did you mount the speaker on the inside of the baffle instead of where you could actually get to the screws? What happens when the sub blows, you are going to have to tear the box apart to get it out?
@BudgetNerd
8 жыл бұрын
+francisdebelo that is a great question. That is the one thing that I wish wasn't the case. If the sub blew, I would be up the river. Although, it rarely gets used these days, so that shouldn't be an issue.
Looks great I would love to hear how it sounds. Could you send me your plan?

How do you calculate the space you need, for every speaker is different right?

I looked at the spec sheet for the speaker.
Geeze if you build me that exact same one, Ill pay you.
Y la prueba? ._.
Hi Ben, I am very interested in building this design. Could you send my your plan? Thanks.

At last - someone making a sub that realises you don't have the speaker hanging out the front wasting all its energy! Nice design - You have a choke in it? Frequencies it can't reproduce will turn to heat in the voice coil otherwise.
@BudgetNerd
8 жыл бұрын
I didn't add a choke. This started out as an experiment almost. That's a good idea though.
How does it sound with Home Theater material?

Haven't hooked it up to a home theater. It's big.. and my wife would kill me if I brought it inside.

What software do you use for hornloaded design?
@BudgetNerd

I used Google Sketch. It isn't for speaker design, but it's just simple 3d design software.
wonder how you will change the speaker?

I'm no sound sound engineer. This project of mine wasn't as scientific as it may have looked. So about your question, I'm not sure.

Where is the test? If you want to test a folded horn you must measure the output compared to the same speaker in an ordinary box.
@BudgetNerd
6 жыл бұрын
That is a good idea, however it was never in a box before. It was just a fun build. I never got very technical with it.

I only used it once at that dance and then messed around a bit with it in my garage. So far I'm pleased! It's loud, really deep and rattles quite a lot of things in my entire house. It's a bit heavier than I'd like, and since it's such a simple design (no built in amp, no low pass filter) I have to lug around and use my heavy amps and eq out the highs. A nuisance, but it sounds great!
