I started working with Franklin Drum Company in early 2020 as they navigated rebranding Risen Drums. Since then, they've become one of the standout independent custom drum builders in the United States. Grady Kenevan and Tim King gifted me the opportunity to design my own drum set, customizing every detail as I pleased. And this is what we created:
- 20x12" and 16x12" Kick Drums
- 12x8" and 14x14" Toms
- 14x4" Matching Snare Drum
- Ludwig Lemon Strata Inspired Lacquer Finish
- Maple/Poplar Shells with 45/Roundover Edges
- Custom Low Profile Bass Drum Spurs
- The Best Drum Tones Money Can Buy
Franklin Drum Company builds on the legacy of so many great American small manufacturers and does their own unique thing! Like Bill Cardwell and C&C Drum Company, Franklin centers their work in vintage styling, while bringing the craft forward with unique finishes. And in the same way that Q Drum Co. innovated with proprietary shell construction, Franklin Drums are made with a proprietary wood shell made right in their hometown of Minneapolis!
Brands like Yamaha, DW Drums, Pearl Drums, and more might keep folks coming back for their modern construction and hardware, but it's the Franklin vibe, both visually and sonically, that keeps my eyes peeled on their social media for pics and video of every single new build they roll out!
I used Turkish Cymbals 15" Millennium Hi Hats, 20 and 22" Meta Brilliant Crashes, and a 22" Millennium Ride in this video too!
Some of the music I played drums to in this video comes from my drumless tracks, available at slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com/ .
The first drumless track used is volume 9, number 21. - slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com...
The second drumless track used is volume 7, number 51. -slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com...
The third drumless track used is volume 7, number 50. - slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com...
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In) - Beyer Dynamic Opus 65 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I enjoy consuming salted potato chips.
And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com/

Was looking for a 8x14 Black Beauty when I found out about Franklin drums. Had them build me a custom snare with the same specs and it blew me away, greatest snare I've ever played, and it was still cheaper than a Black Beauty.

That’s so sick. They have their own metal shell supplier here in the states, so it’s not a mass-produced type of thing. And I really appreciate that about Franklin!
Loooooove 12" deep bass drums. 24x12, best kept secret. Timbo, happy Saturday!

Awesome kit. Share more of their offerings if possible....Melted cookie dough finish laced with espresso..in a lacquer! That'd be cool on some 45 round overs.... (60/40's my vote)

Cool lil kit Tim Tim! With that higher tuning on the snare, I'm getting a 70s Bill Bruford vibe with hints on Lars' St. Anger sound. Also Chad Sexton from 311, but that's just the cherry on the sundae and I'm not a fan of cherries cause they remind me of cough medicine. Anyway, good stuff as always and I hope to see you at the Chicago Drum Show!

TIM! I'm so happy you started a KZread channel so I can follow along with your adventures even more. My brother-in-law (also a drummer) showed me your Instagram and play-along tracks (which I promptly downloaded all of) and it has really changed my practicing. You are super entertaining and the KZread format suits your sense of humor and educational style much better than Instagram. Thank you for sharing your collection and always showing off the drums in a musical context - not just shedding away. Looking forward to so much more from you!

The sound coming out of that kick is very cool. I’ve never gone below a 20” kick as I believed the tones from a smaller bd weren’t really my context for the bulk of what I play. I STAND CORRECTED. As always you’ve got a great feel whatever kit you’re sitting behind. Keep up the great content man!

From my experience my 20 x 10 can project as well as a 22 x 18, just in a different beautiful punchy way
@timbofromkeno
11 ай бұрын
Oh, 100%. Little short kicks are very different, but there are so many more advantages to using them over something like that modern standard 22x18. And if you've never. tried a 24x12 or 24x10, you've gotta give that a try. It's a BEAST!
I’ve got all 22x14 bass drums on my vintage Tama Superstars and Tama Imperialstar kits. This is making me itch to chop them down to 10” for that punch you’re showcasing here. And…they’ll be easier on my poor old man bones and muscles. I’ve always loved 26x14 bass drums. A 22x10 proportionally feels like it would behave the same, but with a higher pitch.

I own an old Pearl traveler kit and the kick is a 20x8, the punch is unmatched. throw an emad and hydralic on it to sound bigger that it actually is! Shallow but big drums seem to be the sound I've been searching for :)

I specified all maple three ply with reinforcement hoops with rounded over outer bearing edges! Best sounding drums I,ve ever had! Still have them!! I love the maple shells! Super stabile and tough!! They had these proprietary shells manufactured by Keller for the first run or two. Today, they use another shell manufacturer (there’s really only one other one, so that’ll limit your options). 😂😂

Great videos Tim, enjoyable and informative, nice kit you have there. Thanks for explaining in a previous video how you get the big deep sound from smaller drums using the Onyx, I'll try that, do you use twin ply's for the reso's as well? Keep 'em coming, this channel will be big soon!!
@timbofromkeno
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard! I appreciate the kind words. For the tom heads, I use the Onyx top and bottom. The Remo equivalent is the White Suede Emperor, but the problem I've had with those heads is a variance in the film used from head to head. So, some of them have much more presence than others. This makes matching the sound of the toms a pain. So, I'd highly recommend trying the Onyx top and bottom, as I've had ZERO issues with consistency from head to head. Hope this helps! : )
