Design for Manufacturing - Project to Product by Modifying Off-the-Shelf Cases

Ғылым және технология

When your project gets popular you might want to sell kits! Clem was asked to make a kit of his universal debugging screen and quickly realized how time consuming it would be to 3d print and assemble the project's parts!
So instead of utilizing fully custom 3d prints he adopts a technique used in mass manufacturing!
Clem redesigns his project to use an industrially made enclosure and modifies it to fit his needs, but instead of simply drilling a few holes in a project box, he leverages the data supplied by the manufacturer to devise a scalable process!

Whats your favourite part of device development? The pcb, the schematic or the case design?

For me personally neither - or all equally. I like the process of having an idea and work on all aspects to turn it into a useful tool or device. I am doing this for 35+ years, it amazes me at the tools we have at our disposal today. Imagine in the late 80s designing a housing, vs. today with 3D printing. Same for PCB and software.

Interesting that manage to do the 3D design via KiCAD and FreeCAD. I might be a dinosaur and I use blender for 3D and model all components and PCB, then take it from there to KiCAD for PCB design (totally backwards now that I hear how you manage to integrate the workflow).

Design phase and first prototype. Max one printed rough case. The I loose interest😂 that's why I like eurorack no visible backside. BTW. It was nice to me3t you at hackaday

Wow i liked that the manufacture gives you the size and trace of the pcb to import into your own electronics design automation suite like KiCad EDA. Also after was cool to see it all imported into FreeCAd as well. Didnt know there were so many awesome open source tools to use! I think this project has given me a much better insight into thinking about how to professionally make projects and not 3D print everything. The only cavet to that is possibly having to do some in-house modification if the minimum numbers are not met by the ready made case manufacture. Awesome to see it all come together!

I'm using those same blue Hammond cases for my projects (they're great boxes), but I don't have a fancy CO2 laser or milling machine. How would you recommend making the display and control cutouts? I'm using a Dremel now, but it's really ugly, and I have no way to do the front face plate either. Can you describe how do you the front plates as PCBs? thanks.

whenever manual tools are involved I try to use templates, so a cutout template made from wood clamped to the case will give you a guide which you follow wit hyour rotary tool(aka dremel). on the PCB as front panel topic...we maybe should do a dedicated video on this topic.

Just be aware, CO2 cutting on ABS or Polycarbonate leads to nice little fires apart to fumes if you are not careful.

Guess what happened of camera, i learned that my laser can detect fires on its own.😮
