Desh Thillana - Carnatic music on iPad 1st time ever by Navneeth Sundar - Animoog App

Navneeth Sundar, a composer and pianist from Chennai, has recently discovered that the touch screen provided by the Apple iPad can be used to perform different kinds of music, including Carnatic music (South Indian Classical Music). The app used in this performance is "Animoog" created by "Moog Music Inc". This particular patch, created by Navneeth himself on the app, is specific to a particular ragam or scale, which in this case is the ragam Desh and its parameters can be tweaked to suit other ragams, which makes it possible to explore the myriad dimensions and expressions there are, in Classical Carnatic music.

What a masterpiece....The thillana has been rendered to perfection in spite of it being on an electronic instrument. Goes to show that any musician with a grasp on his/her instrument can do wonders. It's not in what kind of tools are used by artist, but the artist himself/herself that has the power to evoke emotion in the audience... Beautiful!

Sundar: It is an impressive piece of innovative music. Congratulations. Just one suggestion as a fellow musician: As you would know, one of the most important qualities of our Indian Classical Music is the constant and often alternate inter-play of soft, medium and loud sounds (Vallinam, Idaiyinam and Mellinam) which bring out the full qualities and characteristics of our ragas and krithis according to the mood. You may need to "tweak" this I-Pad and see how this can be incorporated into the software.

This is nothing short of magic! Awesome! What will human ingenuity lead us to next, I wonder. The playing was so good, it would have made Lalgudi proud! Keep it up! The performance is really amazing with all the nuances of Indian classical music incorporated in it. Would someone upload more information about this App? Is it possible to change the timber to another instrument, transpose the key etc. Can it create MIDI files? The amazing part is unlike a keyboard, really continuous variation of frequency seems to be easily possible ( It is an essential part of INDIAN music tradition) Thank you very much for uploading the video, sir.

Can you share some details of the patch that you created for this purpose? In addition to the scale setting, I'd like to know how the keyboard is configured to enable the melismatic performance using the touchscreen.
I purchased Animoog for Iphone. How do I get to this patch for Des raag. The navigation on the app is little un intuitive. Any help would be appreciated.

Vishal Venkat By my estimate, the Android platform is about 2 years behind iOS in stability and performance in the audio layer. In addition, the app pricing on Android is severely deflated compared to the Apple AppStore, which is a disincentive for music developers to invest much in Android ports. Samsung's newest devices with Samsung Pro Audio SDK 2.0 are more music-capable then other Android devices. This fragmentation is also a disincentive for devs, and is confusing for consumers. As always, I expect Android will catch up fast, but it is so far behind now that I wouldn't hold my breath waiting...

i want this app!!! does your patch come with the purchase? is it easy to do this? i want my non-techy mom to do this - she knows how to play carnatic violin but not good at ipad games...

Thanks, would you know of anybody in Bangalore who can provide a few lessons to my son? He plays the keyboard and learning the Goshred on his own. I was hoping that a little guidance can help him

At the moment there are only a handful of GeoShred professional players in the world. I don’t know of anyone in Bangalore. Maybe I can guide him sometime on facetime. But GeoShred is largely self taught at this point.
