Desert Riders • Sahara • XR650L (Full video; 2003)
This was by far my most ambitious bike trip in the Sahara: Jon, Andy, and I set off to ride our desert-adapted XR650Ls across Algeria following gnarly mountain tracks and virgin sand sheet out into the legendary Tenere Desert.
To extend our range without the need for support, we recovered fuel and water caches buried in the sands months earlier. These enabled us to cover huge distances for days at a time.
'To the Heart of the Sahara on Motorcycles', I called the dvd which appeared on National Geographic Channel. It was not an exaggeration and not surprisingly, things got FUBAR'd. It's the Sahara, after all!

What an extraordinary desert experience. Planning to move to Baja California, get myself one of these beasts and ride the coastline off-road. Well done guys!
This is a good trip, Mr. Chris truly deserves the title of the "desert expert".
The three major things you must do to that bike first thing get rid of that smog crap second thing put a FCR carburetor or electron and change the exhaust and if you want to add icing to the cake you would put that bike in the suspension shop and have it Beefed up and revolved for carrying all that luggage. I own a 2007 XR 650 L and I have done quite a few mods to transform that bike it will never be the top dog but it will always do the job.
Que buena aventura.
great trip. Planning on doing similar itinerary next year and get to Chad Lake
Light-ish bikes, top box, soft luggage, leave hard panniers to the GS brigade

I agree. I don't know what we were thinking. I have never used them since.

I have always use soft bags because they are better holding hits when you drop the bike to the ground, maybe like you said top hard box and side soft bags or luggage, but I has always use soft bags for top and sides
Beautiful !! Where can I get one of those 41 liter tanks ?

They were the very last Acerbis ones (ex Dakar XR650R?) even back in 2003. Fyi I would never get such a big tank for a carb bike again. Way too much weight high up. Efi with lift pump could be different.

Hello, What is that short seat we can see in the minute 6? It looks great and I can’t find it on the web. Thanks
