I've never seen a mine lit up like that except at a shaft station! I spent most of today underground and it was dark, dusty, and smoky as a rubber-tire mine tends to be. My LHD has serious lighting so at least we can see what we're digging.

It's amazing how well respirators work. I use one when running an LHD or underground truck to protect myself from dust and diesel soot.

Love the XRF. But like you found, its like gold panning. it only tells you whats on the surface frequency emissions, not any depth in a true cubic ratio. you could put a piece of aluminum foil on top of anything, and all you would see would be the foil. nothing underneath, its truly surface scanning only. . your hammer drill sample is a really great method for a cross sectional analysis using the XRF because now your surface area is exponentially greater than a fractired rock, and the diameter of the photon wavefront is much smaller than the atomic structure re-emitting the light back to the reciever

Awesome values locked up in that ore, the colors alone scream out gold hidden inside!

XRFs don't detect gold very well. If your gold runs with silver, the XRF can be used to detect the silver and indicate the potential presence of gold. They're really better suited to base metals, and require a crushed and pulverized sample for best results.

Accurate. We have been max performing this XRF on known gold bearing ore. I ran this spot twice once through a hammer mill to a sluice and got 1/4 ozt. Also a Channel sample at .4ozt. Lots of sulphides.

Collecting several hundred grams of fine, talcum powder-like drilling discharge for analysis is a better approach, especially when dealing with mineral exploration or evaluating ore bodies. Performing assays on-site is best. XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analyzers perform best on clean, prepared surfaces, and slabbing the samples is an effective way to prepare them for analysis. Having a micro-lab topside, or even inside the underground mine is strategic and beneficial for many reasons.

And fire assay is really the best method for determining gold values without seriously expensive lab equipment. XRFs are junk for gold and I get nervous whenever a client references XRF returns only. If someone tells you their ore contains rhodium based on XRF analysis, run away!

@@Porty1119 Precisely, I even hear of people performing fire assays with a microwave kiln. A XRF (X-ray fluorescence) analyzer is not worthless, when employed correctly.

To get more reliable readings from XRF meter you should crush your sample into fine powder, mix it, and then test portion of this powder. That will spread mineralization more evenly and minimize the nugget effect.

Even though we bar down everytime, we still get one or two that come loose. Some areas of this mine are more fractured, and less continuous than others. Thanks Richard. We'll always keep safe work habits and not cut any corners. That only leads to trouble.

@@mineoperator yes, and the hand holding the rock has the gold ring the radar can see through it. And gold from the ring can get to the rock and mess with the rating. Your holding your gold ring against the rock rubbing against it for minutes at a time.
