It just occured to me that 2005 could have been the same story, just set AFTER 2003.

For all of Bionicle's faults, the early years were a masterclass in how to set up a clever mystery with a big payoff. Bionicle is very much another "Allegory of the Cave" story archetype, a story where things aren't what they seem and what you see in front of your face is just a sign or symbol of the truth. This archetype has been the base for my favorite stories consistently, and I think Bionicle was my first exposure to it. Also, glad you call out 2004 for what it is. I feel like too many people miss the point, the Toa *do* fail and that's a huge part of why I love that story. The Metru did the best they could with the hand they were dealt. It's the backstory to a mass apocalypse, after all, they were never going to succeed.

I think with the MNOG series Adventure may be well suited for 01, although mystery is definately spot on too.
