Ziya Azazi was born in Antakya, Turkey. He studied at Mining Faculty in Istanbul Technical University between 1986 and 1991, when he also studied gymnastics.From 1990 to 1994, he created his first choreographic works in the State Theatre of Istanbul.
He worked with Tanz Atelier Sebastian Prantl (TAW), Tanz Hotel, and Willi Dorner between 1994 and 1998.Having put on stage his solo performance, “Unterwegs Tabula Rasa”, in Vienna in 1999, he was awarded with a scholarship by Summer Dance Week Vienna (Dance Web), and he was entitled “The Most Outstanding Dancer of the Year in Austria” by the Ballet International Magazine.Azazi started to explore the traditional dance of the Sufis in 1999.
Choreographing this dance with different interpretations, he created his solo performances “Work in Progress I” (2001), “Work in Progress II” (2003). He continued to work with Vienna Volksoper, Theaterhaus, Stuttgart, and Grand Théâtre de Genevre during those years.

    Kendi Anlatımıyla : Bahsi geçen Dervish In Progress (Gelişmekte olan Derviş) isimli performansımda bir arınma öyküsü anlatmaktayım. Hayatta giyindiğimiz kimliklerden kurtulmayı, kalbi ve ruhu arındırmayı; özetle kabuk içinde kabuk olan benliğin çıplaklaşma uğraşını sergileyen bir danstır bu. Şovun sonunda (ölümü temsilen) eteğin altında kalışım da, bu uğraşın mezara kadar sürmesi gerektiğini ima eder. “Düne ilişkin ne varsa dünde kaldı cancağzım, bugün yeni şeyler söylemek lâzım” der Celaleddin-i Rumi. Tabi ki Anlayana :/

    There is a concept in Buddhism he is like riding on a wheel of samsara , suffering (dukha) and letting go of cravings ( tanha) and attachment ,detaching from material world and reaching Nirvana. Also i think making rounds can increase DMT in the brain which usually causes awakenings

    I was on a Costa cruise ship in EGYPT and they had these people on for a night on stage IT WAS AMAZING and I will never forget the scene I saw Bravo

    Nowadays-unfortunately-Sufi "dance" (in fact, it is NOT a form of dance) is equals to belly dance. Feel free to choose either or both since there is no difference between these two anymore. It's a shame!

    @@ccsunnie D. Drybread is not talking about the dancer-whoever he is, we don't care-but the meaning of "whirling" in Sufi philosophy. You, the dancer, and everybody else need to understand that what Sufis do is NOT considered dance. If you guys know the Sufi philosophy, you would understand the whole phenomenon.

    @@aestheticman2662 As a Sufi myself, 1) Does the misunderstanding negate this performance? Genuinely curious. 2) I suppose I understand the frustration, but having an expectation that everybody needs to understand the whole "phenomenon" as you say, negates the sheer...infinitude... of it. We are all One. It's not my place to judge.

    I’m pretty sure these dances are in praise and amazement of Almighty God. Taking his shirt off and dancing the way he does brings a lot of attention to himself and his physical attributes. May God guide him.

    Hello. I had a masterclass with this man, you're right, he's not a Sufi dancer, he's a contemporary dancer and uses the dervish principe to create. He has no mystical claim. The work with him was very interesting !! He doesn't dance for tourists, neither in religious places but for people interested by contempory dance.
