Knowing Kurosawa had a failed suicide attempt in 1971 makes me cherish this movie even more. So grateful it was a failed attempt

Dersu Uzala is a wonderful film.
One of the best movies ever made! Kurosawa was indeed the best filmaker of all time!

Haven’t seen his work yet but Hitchcock will always be my favorite. For foreign films, I like 1. Mikhail Kalatozov 2. Ang Lee 3. De Sica 4. Hou Hsiao Hsien, 5. Larisa Shepitko 6. Almodóvar

In my youth, I could not imagine how Andrzej Wajda did not get an Oscar for 'A land of promise' which is an outstanding masterpiece and one of my favourite movies of all time. Then I got acquainted with Kurosawa's work and watched Dersu Uzala. Then I thought: I get it. That's fair. ❤️

A Poem in both visuals and story. Just natural, friendship and nostalgy. This is the movie that my father watched when he was just a 7 year old kid. During a hot boring tuesday he brought up the majesty of this film, and he told me it was his favourite movie of all time. Later, when he was dying, he asked me to watch it and so i promised, and after his funeral i did watch it all, without loosing a single second. He was right.

Dersu Uzala is a movie i watch once every year. It is a praise of nature and humanity. The filming in this movie is just phenomenal. Actors were cast perfectly. Just everything is perfect. This movie is higly recommended to watch.
Nice knowing Akira Kurosawa is an Oscar winner.

The Oscar for Best Foreign Languge Film/International film goes to the country, not the filmmaker/director… Although, Kurosawa did get a Honorary Oscar later, he didn’t win any competitive Oscar…

As a filmmaker, I will follow your words kurosawa-san and go beyond. Arigato
A little mistake: Danelya wasn't a producer. USSR didn't have producers, soviet government sponsored all movies that were made. I don't even know why Danelya was there, he had no connection to the movie. Maybe he was in the government at that time, idk Also, a little fact: the budget of the movie was $4 mil, ENORMOUS money for that time.

Now I'm curious about the polish movie The Promised Land (yes I know it's also called A Land of Promise).
@dejkdake
6 ай бұрын
For me it's the best polish movie ever made (and maybe one of the best pieces of world cinema in general). Sadly, polish cinema is criminally overlooked and "The Promised Land" is a victim of this.
может мой перевод не столь точен, но я процитирую: "Why do we make this film? People need chases, jiggery-pokery, shooting?" (asked the first assistant director) "people themselves do not understand how they need this film" (replied the director (Akiro Kurosawa)) p.s.

So, Kurosawa never actually got his oscar?
@user-pn4oj6hw5c

Там на самом деле от Японии был отдельно номинирован другой фильм, "Дерсу Узала" был конкретно от СССР, хотя и вправду непонятно, зачем сделали две статуэтки.
They, at this time, recognized the need for diversity. Whether some or you like it or not; recognize it or not, people around the world made America.

Of course they had to make an all-American statement about their ego before handling an Oscar to Soviet Union And both the Oscar recipients did a very poor speech, they should be able to speak in their mother tongue
Kurosawa's "Dersu Uzala" won because it was directed by Kurosawa!!! Definitely not one of his true masterpieces!!! "The Promised Land" and "Scent of a Woman" are better!!!
