States with godawful vehicular tax burdens shocked when people look for registration loopholes.

PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX in Virginia every year. $4.90/$100 value in my city So 4.9% of the value is the bill EVERY YEAR. If your RV is assessed at $100k then your bill is $4900. Property tax is paid every year. Penalized for owning something. I dont blame people for registering in Montana
@DLTJR1959
Жыл бұрын
We have the same deal here in NC but it is not that bad. The personal property tax is per county and then the cities add their tax. Our county rate is 0.66% of the assessed value so to compare at 100K the tax would be $660 for a 100K value. We tagged our Wanderlodge in NC and paid the tax. The state has systems in place that make it difficult to register in another state to skirt the personal property taxes. I've not seen any Montana plates around here on RV's. I'm like you. I understand why people do it, but It's still tax evasion.

Agreed, it was recommended to me by a friend and I passed, it’s not worth it. Neither is it worth it for police officers to be out scouring campgrounds hunting for such offenders given the amount of violent crime currently present in our Country. Quite frankly, THAT is the waste of the taxpayer dollar right there.
I'm pissed that they have a problem with boondocking. Better take action against those 130 campers, they are the bane of society apparently. What a joke our government is.
If they want to hold citizens accountable for taxes, then the state needs to be accountable how they spend that money.

My truck registration in Krazyfornia is $950 a year with crazy insurance. I bought a small piece of land in another state, got a PO box and registered my truck there. In 5 years I will have paid off that small plot of land with the savings Im making not paying the absurd registration and insurance in Krazyfornia. CA has the highest gas tax in the country yet still find it necessary to continue to rip you off with one of the highest registration costs in the country and our roads still suck.
As residents of Hawaii it just made sense for us to register in Montana as our RV will never be in Hawaii. Trying to register anywhere else requires residency. I realize this is not why most register there, but it is one legit reason.

@user-nx3sy2rx5n

We lived in Hawaii and bought a truck in GA while visiting they made me get a GA license to purchase the vehicle plus you have to maintain insurance in GA even if you have insurance for other cars in Hawaii.
One of the most egregious things to me is certainly taxing trailers as if they're a motor vehicle & right behind that is taxing motorhomes at the same rate as cars/pickups & commercial vehicles. The bottom line with this stuff is: Elections Have Consequences. You might not like a politicians' tweets or whatnot, but is what he/she doing policy-wise detrimental to your finances/way of life or helping you maintain your freedom & your hard-earned money?
Besides not paying sales tax, the other best thing about registering in MT is one time plates on your RV (trailer models). don't have to register each year. If you can do it legally I would recommend it.
@nans969

In Virginia the plates are also one and done. Unfortunately we have high Personnel property tax and a state inspection for trailers. Other states around us do not have yearly inspections for trailers.
We were able to have no graphics on our trailer - LOVE IT!! So nice not to have swoops and worrying about fading decals....thanks for this week's news!
Wife is a travel nurse, home state (have to have a home state) is Minnesota though we haven’t lived their in 5 yrs. Use her daughters address in Minnesota. Vehicle and rv Insurance uses your home state to insure you, till you tell them either will never be there, And we move across the country (full time rv) every 13 to 26 weeks….. buying a vehicle or insuring a vehicle/ rv is a cluster-Fu$k … so I get why some do this, though not legal, to save money some states are easier to work with then Others. I need to renew my DL next year, (KY DL) and with no physical address or proof I actually live there anymore, because I travel with my wife…. Wonder what laws I’ll break to get a DL…. Such a pain in the azz!!!

Good presentation. Many campgrounds rules state that the "customer" cannot use it as a residence. This makes evictions easier. Seasonal customers instead may have a "licence to use" the campsite. This status would eliminate this possible issue. Also, interstate travel is a right under the U.S. Constitution so there is really no probable cause to check the plate or registration for address on a campground that is also likely private property. Also the customer is not required to speak with the deputy. Hopefully the owner / manager simply said to the deputy: "I don't know". I I'm quite sure if the LLC thing was unconstitutional or illegal someone who was losing money due to it would have taken it to court long ago. If it's a loophole, so what! Scumbag politicians use them all the time.
@aagl747
Жыл бұрын
Well said. By far the smartest comment here. Politicians and millionares (same thing) are the first ones to use constitutional loopholes to their advantage. As long as you’re paying your dues required by law in the state you’re claiming residency and you’re being lawfully compliant you won’t be in trouble. Be smart, check the law, talk to a lawyer if you want to feel apeace but registering in Montana with an LLC is completely legal, and you live in an RV if they say you’re not from here, hell take your camper and head to Montana for a few weeks😂
I stayed on the area of the Grassland outside of Wall last Spring, I can't imagine the place with 130 campers there, when I was there I was one of about 5 (it was early April with 50+ mph winds though). Also, it gets extremely hot there most of the summer, I imagine the generator noise can be aweful. Always remember the old axiom - two's company, three's a crowd.
Technology is going to massively increased the popularity of boon-dock camping. Gone are the days of a honey bucket, with toilet solutions, massive battery systems compared to even 5 years ago and solar is taking virtually all of the hardship out of book-dock camping.

Ha... I live in Montana and have for the 18 years that I've had an RV (motorhome). I was challenged about residency a few times many years ago but not lately. Despite the purchase advantages, I wish Montana would change to charging sales tax and reduce property/income tax ... you consume, you pay :) I don't have strong feelings about swooshes and graphics, i.e. it would not affect a purchase but I do like the non-swoosh straight line look best. At the time CC and Monaco along with the other High end coach makers like Bus converters production numbers were low enough that they were able to do these fancy paint jobs . The company's that are now operating are not able to produce quality coach's because they are making more units than they have trained crews to build and there is no way to cut corners and do a quality paint jobs .
We own a deeded RV lot in WY and there are a LOT or Montana plates, for just this reason. Not us. Didn’t even know the LLC loophole until now.
In Alaska we have no sales tax. Also if a vehicle is more than 6 years old you can pay a small one time fee and it is registered as long as you own it. To do this you have to be a resident and eligible for the PFD. If you leave the state more than 180 days a year you are no longer eligible for any of these benefits.
Thank you Jason for this information. I would like to see the graphics of the Rvs and the Rv tv with Rv Miles. That’s crazy with the license plate being from other than the state you live in you can’t have that plate. Thank you for the information! See you soon!

Oh hallelujah, the swoopy graphics are on the way out! Never understood why they were popular.
Some friends of mine were doing this and purchasing their RV from a Montana branch of the RV dealership. I believe it was the dealership that suggested it.
Airstream RVs & trailers or otherwise need no graphics, only SOB's need them just Stand Out Among the white boxes!
I am getting really sick of finding these designated sites only crap. These are our public lands, who is making the decision to place these restrictions and under what lawful right or authority are they creating these new rules and charging these fees???

They should start leaving the graphics off of the trailers, first off, they make them out of Chinese Vinyl, that dates the trailer in less than 5 years. Second there is actually campsites that do not allow RVs with Vinyl graphics. I know, I do NOT QUALIFY for those campsites for other reasons.

Agree completely about the Montana LLC. It was tempting but just didn’t pass the sniff test for us.
Pisgah National Forest in NC has designated dispersed camping. They say it was to help with litter and other trash.
1. Private property does not fall under the commercial vehicle statutes. 2. Soliciting a crime that is not a crime is a felony in nearly every state. 3. PRIVATE PROPERTY CAN NOT BE ASSESSED A FEE, REGISTRATION OR LICENSE. TO DO THIS IS AGAINST THE CONSTITUTION.... END OF STORY
It would make sense to change your residence since Montana has low income taxes too or pick a state with low overall taxes.
In Wyoming you can get a blind LLC. Use that and go to South Dakota to register

A law requiring you to register _your_ vehicle in your home state does not apply when it's a vehicle owned by a corporation...the corporation owns the asset and can register the vehicle where it is based. This sheriff would need to prove that the rig is, in fact, owned/titled to the individual in question and not a corporation to cite them. Now, as others have pointed out, the downside to this 'loophole' is you're effectively making your rig commercial which comes with a bunch of other regulations....

My RV is registered in NY in a business name due to NY is one third of GA. Georgia also will not allow me to obtain a resident DL with only a PoBox and no street address so I keep my FL DL and insurance.
I generally don’t like the graphics because they will look bad in a few years, but I am remodeling a trailer from 1985, so I don’t like the strange aluminum siding that they no longer use either
I'm legally domiciled in the state of Louisiana and my vehicles are registered there. My banking is done there, my taxes are filed there, etc. But I do not reside there, nor have I been there in a couple years. I do not reside in any state but travel the country in our motorhome with my wife. We're retired and living off social security, a pension and our retirement fund so are not employed, much less employed in the state we happen to be temporarily residing in. We traveled through and resided in 10 states last year for maybe a month or more, boondocking most of the time, which is completely legal as long as you follow FS and BLM rules.
Doesn't it also depend on where the vehicle is primarily used, or stored? IE my parents have a residence in Michigan, but I live in Indiana. I have a sailboat that is exclusively used there, so I register the trailer, and the boat in Michigan. Heck if you look at Illinois and Michigan laws regarding registration, they 100% conflict with each other so no matter where you register it, you are breaking the law of the other state. 🙄
As a Montana resident I love asking big fancy rigs where in Mt the are from when we see them on our travels all over. So the swirls were designed to make an otherwise dull looking box interesting, right? Maybe the industry should shift away from dull boxes? Brands like Taxa Outdoors & Safari Condo, even older designs like Airstream & Casita all capitalize on building personality into their RV's.
What if I have family in Montana and say I live there. I stay in Colorado but spend most of my time being a Traveling nomad.
