I'm glad to hear you confirm what depression can do. In the past six months, while trying to find help, I keep being told that the things I have, bipolars, severe anxiety and insomnia, ptst, ocd, are not real illnesses. I keep having my heart broken being told I'm fine, when I have doctor's who are telling me you are not fine, you need special care in certain circumstances, it's people like you who give me hope, it's hard enough dealing with what I'm dealing with, but to have the world around me look at me and say but you look fine, it's breaking my heart each time I hear it. I cry out for help because I don't want to be a statistic, but it's amazing how many people just throw you and what your telling them away. It's been a hard 30 years, an even harder 6 months now that as an adult I'm trying to find help on my own and feel like I need someone to hold my hand, I just have to keep hoping I'll get it.

You can save the heart of the person left behind by treating the deceased with respect and trying to make that person look as presentable as possible for their loved ones. Depression hits those left behind. Having a smooth transition is important. Although I believe you do that each time and maybe don't realize the impact it can have on one's heart and emotions at a difficult time.

This is depression. You don't even care about your hygiene anymore, it's not important. It takes a lot of energy, which you don't even have sometimes. Depression is different depending on the person. People experiment different kind of symptoms and feelings. Please don't say they're being lazy, you're not in their body. I've been depressed for over 12 years, I'm a student, about to graduate and become a teacher, so I don't think I'm lazy :)

As a kid that's hair is about to this extreme and my own depression is getting awful this is some advice that I really hope u take bc I've been wishing for someone to do this for years. If u get her a therapist please dont ever make her feel like it's a chore bringing her there, dont talk about gas money or how ur tired of driving there bc ir will make her not want to go any more and feel even more like a burden. If she has a breakdown and screams at u please dont yell back, usually its from holding in emotions for days and something as simple as spilling a drink will trigger it. And finally please give them their space but when they leave their room or want to be around family again be kind and act as nothing happened. Also if they are staying in their room for days find something they like (fav chips, ect) and give it to them, it shows u love then and think about them and want her to know shes not alons

Nobody took the time to talk about the girl who was going through the hours of pain of yanking. Nobody took the time to call the depressed girl a hero. I wanted to hear them talk about the girl with the knots. How she felt then and how she feels now that her hair is healthy.

I have depression too, I slept for months to the point where I got bed sores. But my mother kept getting me up to shower and she would bring me food and tell me how much she loved me. I only wish more parents could do that for their children, to understand and still take care of them no matter how much they have given up on themselves. Edit. Its been three years, I went to a therapist every Friday for a year and I am off all my medications. I told my father to his face the damage he caused by abusing me, and he apologized. I didn't just blame him, I told him I knew about his childhood abuse and that it wasn't right to continue it with me. He broke down and that was the first time I saw him cry, we still have a strained friendship but its getting better. I met someone at a place I was working and we are now engaged, we have been together for a year now. I'm still at home repaying my mother for all her kindness and compassion. And I haven't felt depressed in a whole year. I know it's still looming in the back of my head but its quiet now. I can say honestly that I am content with my life. Thank you all for your concerns and care for my wellbeing.

I am grateful for my mother, I am still working on recovery and getting my life back together, but its a long road and its hard not to jump off of it. For all of you "calling out teenagers for faking depression": I went through puberty extremely depressed. The only reason I could get out of bed was I was so intensely terrified of being yelled at that it was enough fear to drive me out of bed. Everyone told me I didn't have depression, it's just my age, to man up, etc. So there I was, a young teenage boy, self harming, suicidal, exhausted and sick all the time, unable to bathe consistently or get frequent enough haircuts, feeling all the more pathetic and worthless because of this attitude. I still have depression. Now that I'm older and my self harm and suicidal tendencies became too obvious to ignore, I'm finally believed. But if I'd seen a mental health professional earlier instead of being told it was just normal teenagehood and I was faking it, perhaps it never would've gotten this far. Perhaps I would've kept up with school, perhaps I'd have friends in person. So please don't attack young people for expressing their feelings. Yes it can be annoying when someone's all like "UwU I'm so depressed" when their experience seems mild. You don't know what they're going through deep down, you don't know their lives. Seeking attention online by faking mental illnesses is itself a sign of neglect in the home, is a sign of other disorders aside from the ones they're claiming. If you're a teen- or anyone, really- who feels like you need help and no one is listening, please reach out. Feel free to respond to this comment, too, I can't do much but maybe I can make you feel heard, and if that helps at all? Then I'll be very glad to have done something rather than sitting back claiming other people's problems aren't real simply because on a surface level they're not as bad as my own or as bad as they could be.

Just reminding people that depression can range from mild to severe, since so many comments are trying to invalidate those people. Just because someone can function in life it doesn't mean they're not depressed and don't have the joy sucked out of every little thing in life.

You don't really realize what you're doing to yourself until much later. I never gave it any thought until it was over. I had destroyed myself slowly over time. Too afraid to ask anyone for help. Help that I desperately needed. I needed someone. I let my hair grow and become messy. I darkened my curtains and blocked out the light. I spent less time around friends. I punched my head in frustration until I had large bumps. I screamed on the inside because I was too afraid to shout out loudly because I didn't think anyone would understand and help me. Depression is an awful thing that I wish we didn't have to suffer, but i suppose to be rid of it would mean to get rid of some of the more positive emotions we also can feel when life isn't total hell. I hope everyone who is currently drowning in the darkness finds their way and finds the light once again.

I'm a doctor, I specialised in paediatrics. Going through these comments, the main issue here is the fact that most of these kids are seen by counsellors. Not a psychiatrist specialized in child or adolescent care. If the counselor is trained at picking up signs of depression in adults and is now seeing adolescents, they are not trained enough. No offense. Children are not miniature adults and adolescents are not all attention seekers. There are kids who fake an illness, to not do school work or house chores but even that is a sign of an underlying conflict. It's not depression but they do deserve to be heard and loved. Adolescents and young adults suffering from depression should understand one thing. It IS A DISEASE. There might have been a trigger, a few stressors, but now it's a disease, just like heart disease or diabetes. It won't "go away". People keep asking for the cause. Cause was relevant only in the beginning. Now it's a disease and it needs treatment. Treatment isn't "seeing a counsellor" if it's severe enough to cause distress and suicidal thoughts. It needs to be treated with medicines. There are safe and effective medicines. This isn't 80s. We don't lock people up or give horrible drugs to keep you "dull and zombified". You actually get cured, or at least reduce the problems to an extent where you can enjoy the little things in life again. If your child has depression, go see a doctor. Get a proper diagnosis. Make sure if medicines needed or not. If it's manageable with counseling, the doctor will guide you to a psychologist or the specific type of counseling needed. Please do not hesitate. Protect your child's mind NOW just like the way you protected his/her head from a fall when they were kids.

It's good that some understand that depression isn't sadness. It's not easy to get out of. It robs you of every feeling and leaves you as a shell of a human being. It's like your soul has left, but your body is still there, existing, and for what? All of the things you loved and cared about most are simply irrelevant. You don't care anymore and you can't figure out how to care. It takes something like this to help catch your footing. The best advice I ever received as a patient was to do one thing for myself every day no matter how small that makes me feel prettier/better about myself. If taking a shower was too daunting (and it's extremely exhausting as someone with multiple chronic illnesses and depression) try to put on a clean, pretty shirt. If changing clothes was too much to handle, put on some earrings. If not earrings, put on some chap stick. Any little thing every day helps get you back into motion and helps to prevent you from falling back to rock bottom.

Please understand the difference between “I am depressed.” and “I have depression.” Everyone can feel depressed, it’s natural to feel down sometime in life. Depression, on the other hand, is not a single emotion, it’s a whole, complicated state of mind. Either way, depressed people and people diagnosed with depression can both have an internet hug from me❤️ the amount or seriousness of someone’s sadness doesn’t really determine the fact that they all deserve some kind of consolation

It’s not that long my hair just tangles itself and it takes about 10-15 hours so I only brush my hair once a month(I know a month seems a lot)

People like this still exists and that's a big joy to the world. And also I wanna say, instead of saying that we need more people like this, let us try and be that ourselves. Let us live every second of our lives without a single hesitation to help people, care and show kindness ❤️
