This was very helpful. In an office where we are contemplating which motorized one to purchase. I'm looking for consistency and we have many instruments to sharpen. After having used both, which would you suggest may be the easier to use for volume with of coarse constancy between 4 hygienists using the same instruments and possibly all involved in sharpening over the course of time?

Pat, At 11:50 you say both manufacturers recommend moving the instrument across the abrasive face but your recommendation is to ignore the manufacturer. Your reasoning is valid however, the manufacturer wants you to use all of the abrasive face so that it wears evenly over time. Sharpening instruments in the same location will wear the abrasive in that one spot and the abrasive does not maintain a flat surface. In essence you are trading the feel of maintaining a flat surface by not moving the instrument for an instrument that absolutely will not be flat as the abrasives wear. The stone used for hand sharpening is a good example.

Thank you. I also get a flat surface because I keep the cutting edge flat against the surface during sharpening. I mimic how Hu-Friedy puts their blades onto their instruments. I was fortunate enough to go to the Hu-Friedy factory and watch the creation of the blades. I really make sure the entire blade is fully flat and adapted on what ever stone I use to sharpen, so that might be how I am able to keep an even flat surface.

I would think that if you inserted the instrument at different points each time that you could compensate for the abrasive face wearing evenly.

I just began at a new office. I've been a hygienist 21 years. These instruments are 6 years old and I was told the Dr prefers to do all of the sharpening. They were horrible. And after talking to the last hygienist have been horrible for years. I found the hawe sharpener in their lab. So internet search brought me here. Now I'm sitting here fuming because today I sharpened 8 packs by hand. There are only 3 instruments and each pack took me easily 30 mins because they were so bad. Noe I see how easy this is. Dr can suck it. I and my patients are the ones suffering. I'll be using this from now on. He promised me new instruments but I now realize that won't be happening

I hear u Brandon Drs make sure they have what it takes to make their work easier but don’t want to spend a dime on Hygenist, we trudge along with crap instruments, and any other junk chairs, and terrible ergonomic set ups they make us use. My previous dds did not buy the front delivery bracket trays for his new office cause it was cheaper.. Now I have to constantly turn to the left to do everything.. He has the same but has an assistant handing him everything.. It took a major toll on my back the constant turning and reaching for everything to my left instead the easy front delivery bracket tray.

I don't understand why the dentist would waste their time sharpening. I would refuse to work with a dull instrument. Nonmalfeasance is a serious ethical issue and no dentist, nor hygienist should scale with dull instruments.
