Many cell phones have infrared capabilities. I've used the app "Peel remote" for an older Kenwood preamp that didn't come with a remote. Worked great! Awesome CD player btw. I've gotten 2 older Dennon units like that one. Sound fantastic!

I remember that ceiling fan that was installed by the previous owner when we moved in the house back in '98, and by the time, the ceiling fan had gave up on us and it did serve well for not just for their bedroom, but also did serve well in the kitchen two. The ceiling fan quality is from Taiwan until they went to China by Hunter Ceiling Fan Company.

I know this is an old video, but the control knob next to the headphone jack serves 2 purposes, one is the headphone level, and the other one is the output ( volume) level. At least that's how it works on my 2 Denon CD players, and when using the remote, the volume knob is motorized. Keep up the great work!

I have a somewhat older Sony CDP-XE510 (from 1997), and it has the same volume control which can only be adjusted with a remote. Universal remote worked okay (it could even eject the CD remotely) but I kept searching for an original remote. Finally found one and fixed it. What Sony did differently is that volume level (and pretty much everything else like play mode) would reset to the defaults if power is cycled.

I wonder if there is a little EEPROM on the board which stores the settings. If there is you might be able to disconnect it or ground out a data line and have the unit start up with default settings. Just keep in mind some EEPROMs can store important data such as calibration information (but given all the trimpots I doubt this unit stores any calibration info digitally.)

LOL, I just took an old one I had upgraded and returned to the original box out of storage because my gf wanted to set a system up. I hooked it up and the cd doesn't spin. I thought it might be a dirty laser but checked KZread to see if there was anything to help me and I found your video. I've got the remote and when I start the machine it comes up as -20 like yours but the volume doesn't change pushing the volume on the remote either. Doesn't really matter as cleaning the laser did nothing. Must be something else with the machine.

  • @tevetsela

The volume on the denon 820 is automatically set to -20 after approximately 2 days it is shut down (no power). Probably that’s the best level to listen to this unit without getting into possible compression and loss of dynamic range.

I wouldn't take a seat near that contraption 😅 9:10 Better to connect the S/Pdif and do the DA conversion in a standalone DAC or at the final preamp/stereo amplifier. Nice BB in there, but in the end it comes down to the reconstruction filter that's behind the DA chips.

I got a DCD-1290 here. That got that same volume control on it (digital volume). When I started it for the first time I did see that -20. I didn't knew what it was. But I found the remote and then I tested the volume. Then I noticed that the -20 was the volume all along. However, the DCD-1290 does have fixed and those variable outputs. And since fixed output will always sounds beter, I never used the variable output anyway. But... when I change the volume on my player, turn it off, turn it on again, it gets back to -20. Maybe that's a feature of a player that has both fixed and variable output. And since it is a digital volume, I suggest you NEVER use that. Digital volume only got mature far after 2000 and by that time, you got those players with the DVD-like-drives in it, that are no-where as acurate as an old fashion 1:1 CD drive will be.

The thing I don't like about Harmony (Logitech) universal remotes, is that they don't give you the flexibility when choosing a device from the supported list. You have to enter the exact brand, and type number. Other chinese universal remotes lets you enter just the brand for example, and they list the whole range of supported devices, even by chassis number, or remote name. Very flexible. I for example am unable to find an appropriate match for Beko chassis 10.4 remote, (RC613311) although it is used by many many devices. Harmony still doesn't lets you search for it. Very frustrating.

do some cd player repairs, usually stick to marantz cd 63/67 series, they are easy to do, have few faults, lasers are going on them now and are easily sourced and reliable, sometimes the 5v regulator goes on them as they have a poor heatsink, it results in no switch on, but basically well made reliable players, sony's are sometimes different, run a mile with players with kss240a lasers as even new ones are unreliable, and pioneer players can cost a fortune if laser is dead so not worth it, same goes for a lot of sony es players, never tried a denon yet though.

Does the volume also control digital out? Very decent DACs, and headphone output with volume control😃. Don't you love to have all the controls accessible on the front panel (in case the Remote gets lost). If the volume also controls digital out, it could be a nice way to prevent clipping and distortions on many of the overly compressed CDs with 20 or so dBs of dynamics🤣 -jbl loudness war. But that has to be investigated if it actually does something to signal before conversion. Normally you would want Sinusoidal signal to hit -3dB not 0dB to prevent distortions. When I ripped old CDs, especially from 80s and early 90s most of them would barely hit 0dB. But ever since portable digital players appeared powered by little dinky 3V Codecs/amplifiers it turned out that the signal level is too low to power headphones - solution, more compression and clipping to raise the signal. Now they sell equipment with Hi-Res logo BS and some Hi-Def downloads that are not much better than properly mastered and cut CDs - if we had the DVD Audio PCM format accepted in 90s, then the Hi-Res is nothing new, just reinvented wheel with lower profile tires.

In digital you can not exceed 0db. The biggest problem with early cds was the record companies were too cheap to make a separate mix for CD. The cd master was made from the same analog tape used to make the 45db dynamic range limit mix that was mixed to sound best on limited vinyl and cassette equipment. I never experienced this because the music I listen to was mostly full digital. Recorded digitally, mixed digitally.fantastic dynamics well beyond anything analog could ever hope to reproduce.

This Denon DCD820 was a good mid range CD player in 1990. The dual Burr Brown DAC and quality audio filters were among the finest on the Japanese decks. Philips's TDA 1541 (A) was also a good contender, but existed in various quality, some being tested for a better linearity (special crown markings...). They were also a little older in conception, and perhaps more expensive, as Philips or Marantz sold few double DAC decks, compared to Japanese Denon, Yamaha... and many others using Burr Brown converters. These generation of decks generally suffers from bad loading belts, but have relatively simple and easy to maintain mechanisms. Laser units can easily be supplied... These units can also have issues with brown goo glue, and bad supply filtering caps. Reflowing the voltage regulators is also interesting if you unmount the main board. And what is surprising is the sound quality even latest DAC have difficulty to challenge, 30 years plus later... So if someone is generously donating one of these old looking Japanese decks, it's a piece of equipment you can use without shame, even if it won't play MP3, WMA, Flacc or other compressed formats...
