Denny Hamlin Reacts to Shane Van Gisbergen’s Retaliation Against Austin Hill

Спорт

Denny Hamlin discusses the last-lap battle between Austin Hill and Shane van Gisbergen in the COTA Xfinity race. He mentions how Austin Hill initiated contact, which lead to SVG’s retaliation. Denny asked Shane about the incident and how it would have been different in the Supercar series. SVG talked to Denny about how he’s adapting to the differences in the way NASCAR officiates races, which leads Denny and Jared to discuss the track-limit penalties at COTA and what, if anything, should be done differently.

The thing is, everybody knows that SVG was the best driver on the day in that race, and he was driving away from everybody until those stupid cautions happened. We then watched Hill drive SVG so far past the corner he ended up off the track. SVG had to then Pay him back so that people knew that they couldn’t get away with that crap. It’s just disappointing that after all of that he loses an awesome days work and a good result because of a ridiculous rule by NASCAR, just because he slid across the corner by maybe 2 inches while following hill, trying to get the position back. It makes no sense. SVG should have won that race and most people know it.

I like the "strike" rule or "warning" rulle. You get 1 warning or strike, then you get a 5 sec penalty each time after that. They hold you during a green pit stop, penalize you at the end of the race or if it happens in the final laps of a stage, you get moved back those 5 seconds in the running roder, behind the cars that would be ahead as a result (before pit stops). A drive thru or 30 secs is just way too much for missing a mark by 2 inches.

The V8 Supercar series has a curb strike rule where drivers get 5 strikes before a 15sec penalty is applied. I think Nascar should implement the same but maybe give drivers 2 or three only. It's not perfect as drivers save them up until the last laps and then straight line where they can but better than a no warning PLP or 30 second end of race penalty which doesn't fit the crime. If there is one thing the established drivers have learned this weekend is that you don't try and rough up SVG as he will return back with interest! Loving SVG's move to Nascar. As a Kiwi I have never watched so much Nascar or listened to so many podcasts. This is way better than the coverage we get with Supercars on our part of the world.

Considering COTA is a F1 track (literally was made for F1), seeing what FIA is now asking from Red Bull Ring, asking to change the asphalt runoff to gravel would be great for COTA as well. Actually every single track should have like 1.5 metre width kerbs instead of the current ones and then straight after have either gravel or grass. That way it's self policing and no need for track limit penalties

SVG maybe new, he may be learning Nascar, but not racing. He may be polite in interviews, but he is no motor racing rookie. He is used to the argy bargy of Supercars and of LeMans. He is used to the aggression. You can earn a living staying near the back of the Nascar field, not in Supercars. He has been a ruthless competitor for 20 years. He's not naive. And he does not take prisoners. To him, coming second is to be the first of the losers. He did not get the nickname The Spider for nothing. This is the difference between a New Zealander and an Australian. A NZ'er has to always prove he deserves the win, whether its rugby or motor racing. It's the small country syndrome. It's not the Dale Earnhardt type of aggression. Its the "don't mess with me or you are my target", kind. It's the, "if you are slower than me then get out of my way" type of competitive behaviour.

In Aussie at circuits like Surfers Paradise where we have rumble stripped chicanes, the rule is minimum of two tyres on the black stuff at all times. Sensible. Allows the driver to utilise the strips but still stay on the racetrack. COTA is a farce in my opinion. The racing surface should be where the cars are forced to race. On a walled street circuit they stay on the race surface by simply driving to the conditions to do so. At this elite level it shouldn't be a problem.

Seemed like Hill checked up a little when SVG hit him which made the hit a bit more severe, otherwise I think Hill would have been punted out of the way with that amount of force if his car was near the limit. T1 is always tricky on a tight turn like that. If you're way on the inside like that, you'll have to brake earlier than the rest simply because you're sacrificing a wider arc for track position. At T1, looked like Hill applied some pressure and it got paid back to him when he checked up later.

He saw what happens if you dick off to SVG who's done nothing but race you clean all day ~ Like Shane said "Talk about? I guess, don't know what there is to talk about" ~ Austin would agree. I would think less of SVG if he hadn't knocked him on his ass. You were BEAT Austin! and you know it!

Big difference between racing a mid-tier driver in a mid-tier series and being anywhere near at top-tier driver in the top-tier series. Kyle Busch won't have to worry about Austin Hill in the 3. They won't be anywhere near each other, and if Austin Hill races like that for 25th, Kyle Busch won't be the only one he'll have to worry about. He has to get past the rolling roadblock Carson Hocevar first.

I like the horse racing rule. You finish behind the horse you fouled. So if it’s just on place or six, ten or twenty spots you lose it’s still your fault you fouled. Last year we saw Bubba Wallace get a race suspension when he wasn’t even in the playoffs. That is ridiculous. Egregious penalties need to make folks remember the rules.

I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority here, but I thought this past race just looked super unprofessional. You guys don’t ignore track limits like y’all did this weekend when you race Sonoma or Watkins Glen. But for COTA everyone just ignores the lines and takes corners as wide as they want. It doesn’t look as bad as Phoenix does, but still just looks a little amateurish.

AJ pushed SVG wide so he could get past, SVG pushed AJ wide to get his place back. In V8 Supercars AJ would have had to redress the position or cop a penalty. Running each other off the track is why the rest of the world doesn't watch NASCAR. Yes the track limits are stupid, and again the only place it happens is NASCAR. Use the centre of the car over the white line on the corners, I'm not talking about the run off areas, but you shouldn't be using run off areas as acceleration areas. What's the point of having a track if you don't have to drive on it.

I made a suggestion with something that may be a possible improvement, maybe, maybe not, but you could have at least encouraged a discussion or a debate on why you prefer to have drivers using bash and crash techniques over drivers using skills and race craft to get the best lap times out of their cars.

What also makes this worse is how we're constantly talking about track limits. I don't want to watch a race where half the talk is about track limits. It's part of why I lost interest in F1. Austria and the desert tracks are a misery to watch because that's half the discussion of the weekend. Fortunately, it's not as much of an issue in NASCAR because places like Watkins Glen and Sonoma exist. But there can be something like a no advantage rule or strike system. As much as I feel the coming to the stop rule is pretty overblown, it's not as bad. At COTA, there's also the penalty loop. Instead of a drive-through, running that would look less awful.

I think you yanks have no idea as yet what SVG is capable of and what is coming for you. That was just a very small taste of what SVG has in his kit bag. He will out think, out drive, out maneuver and psyche out his competition and then take wins and ultimately championships. It’s what he has done in every discipline he has competed in. Eastern Creek raceway, in a Supercar a few years back. Drying wet track. He is on overheating wets. Running down the main straight at nearly 300km/h putting the left hand tires on the grass one lap then the right hand tires on the grass the next, to keep them cool so he could win the race! He is a master and probably will be one of the greatest multi discipline drivers in history.

He doesn't need to catch on, it's drivers like Hill that need too. In Supercars retaliation is a huge problem, because it's considered to be "ok" culturally. The series had to crack down on it just to stop people being put into the wall every race. Everyone is saying the penalty is harsh, but SVG is used to getting suspended for something like that. A penalty like that isn't a deterrent to a guy like SVG.
