Dennis Lehane on SOMETHING WILD

Something Wild, Jonathan Demme’s screwball thriller from 1986, makes good on its title and then some. Jeff Daniels plays a mild-mannered IRS agent caught in the orbit of a flaky small time thief played by Melanie Griffith. The film proceeds as a funny, quirky rom-com á la Howard Hawks’ Bringing Up Baby until the arrival of Griffith’s sociopathic ex-husband, played by Ray Liotta, when things take an abrupt turn toward the dark side. The movie’s eclectic soundtrack, a Demme trademark, reinforces the film’s roller coaster mood swings.

Ray Liotta was awesome in this, and Griffith and Daniels were just as good. Too few have seen it.

Just an amazing movie that keeps you on edge, keeps you guessing, and yeah, Ray Liotta gave a stunning, terrifying performance. Must watch.

I love this movie. So quirky and interesting and well acted. Love the little moments like the rappers, or the girl at the gift shop. Love the use of Ethnicolor in the climatic scene. Amazing movie!

I just watched Something Wild for the first time. I heard of this movie when it came out in the 80s, but didn't see it then. I would be interested in hearing more about the two Jonathan Demmes -- one before silence - lambs, and a different one after. Did he change because of trauma from that film's horrifying subject matter? Or did that film create Super Big Success for him, and that changed, or corrupted him?

Not Ray Liotta's debut -- I know that he was in "Lonely Lady" with Pia Zadora before this ... but this was definitely his breakout !
