I’m currently reading it again after watching a vid last week where some guy used mid journey to visualise a film adaptation of it by Denis Villeneuve. It looked great! Btw, it turns out that the paper back that I pulled off the shelves is a first edition that yeah, I bought new. I remember as a teen reading it and going wtf is this? This is completely different to the square-jawed space hero Lensman science fiction I read in the school library. It has sex and drugs in it! When I realised what was going on and who Neuromancer actually is (and WG takes quite a while to get there) it was like a bomb going off in my mind. As I read the last paragraph I put the book down and thought how amazing it would be as a movie….Been at least 2 decades since I last read it and it is standing the test of time incredibly well.

Rendezvous With Rama is the greatest science fiction story never made into a movie yet. If done right - and seeing his work with Dune, Denis Villenouve certainly has the capability to do this - this movie would be an instant classic of science fiction movies.

People have been wanting to make this movie for many, many years. I think Denis Villenueve is probably the only director working right now who could do a good job on it, so I'm glad it's going to be him. I'm probably more excited for this than I was Dune, and I'm a big time Dune fan. Maybe after he's done with this, he'll think about dong more Dune films I'll take movies for all six books. It would be crazy seeing the fourth one made into a movie. That one is probably actually unfilmable, but if anyone could pull it off I'd love to see it.

Even years ago, it felt pretty clear that Villeneuve would prefer working on something unrelated to Dune before returning for Messiah. To take some distance and come back with a refreshed perspective and additional filmmaking experience, while also letting relevant actors do the same (as well as literally age a bit). It makes perfect sense, and with how exciting a Rama adaptation will be, it's not even gonna make the wait feel that long to me I think

Yeah, it's seemingly not as well known. For a while Morgan Freeman was trying very hard to get it made, so at least I knew Morgan Freeman had read it. But nobody ever talks about the book, even among pretty nerdy scifi circles. Clarke in general doesn't seem to get as much credit as I feel he deserves. His name is known, but his works aren't talked about a whole lot. Of the "Big Three", Asimov seems to have the most enduring fame, and Heinlein is mentioned but often in a negative way by people who don't understand him. Other than 2001: A Space Odyssey, for which people mainly think of Stanley Kubrick, when does Clarke really get talked about anymore?

Rendezvous with Rama would be an ideal film for Villeneuve. Like most Arthur C Clark stories and as with 2001, the story is a massive tease with zero payoff. It starts as a mystery and lazily ends with a mystery and taxes the reader/viewer to actually come up with the story/conclusion themselves. It's the story telling equivalent of the unseen contents of the Pulp Fiction brief case. Something that leads the reader/viewer to believe they have witnessed something profound when in fact they have witnessed nothing. However, the spectacle leading up to the story with the massive space station would be an interesting visual and ideal for Villeneuve as it will just be cold, impersonal technology and fun to watch on the big screen and he won't have to deal with any of those pesky issues such as actually fleshing out characters and dialogue. Either way, he will continue to pull the wool over people's eyes and convince them that he is a great film maker.

I'm finishing Rama II now, and plan to devour the last two in the series. Villeneuve and/or Chris Nolan are the only directors I trust to handle this. 'Rendezvous' was very short and relatively uneventful, and completely opaque. It wouldn't shock me if they merged the stories, and made the insane things happening to the second crew happen to the first instead. Whatever he does, it will be transcendant and I need not worry. I can tell everyone here, if it happens, it is mandatory IMAX viewing. The Rama crafts are 31 miles long and 18 miles wide. The scale will be breathtaking.

Plz, PLEASE i want Rendezvous with Rama adaptation to happen for Denis Villeneuve!! Hollywood always copy eachother and once something original becomes hugely successful every studio has to jump onboard and do the same. Examples of this remember when director Peter Jackson masterfully and very faithfully adapted tolkien's lotr novels; the way he shot the huge War battles specifically, afterward you had all of the major Hollywood studios copying, with the 2001 King Arthur movie, Colin Farrell's cheesy Alexander epic, Ridley Scott's Gladiator and many more. this is how Hollywood works, no one will dip their toes in the "Originality Pool" until that one individual goes first, that's when all the others always follow. this is why if Denis were allowed to adapt RWR a Arthur C. Clarke classic, and if it were as successful at the box-office as his Dune epic adaptations; i believe that would cause the major Hollywood studios to jump onboard and start adapting many other classic sci fi stories. this industry is in desperate need of some original, thought provoking, hard science fiction story adaptations. Not lazy, glossy derivative nonsense like Zack Snyder's stupid "Rebel Moon", but real thinking person's sci fi, something us sci fi enthusiasts can really get our teeth into. It's clear Hollywood has not had the confidence to do this so i'm praying Denis gets his chance with RWR 🙏🤞

Villeneuve needs to just make all of these movies because no one can touch his cinematic skills at this point. Dune was EVERYTHING I wanted Star Wars to be all these years. Absolutely perfect in basically every way. Cinematography, score, cast, production, CGI, story/plot, writing & character development, costumes… everything. And on top of that every character has their strengths and weaknesses and without a single WOKE pandering. Perfect.

I'm guessing they'll do Cleopatra next, since it's so close to being ready. Then Timothee and Zendaya will be the right age to play the characters in Dune Messiah. But honestly all of those movies sound good lol.

the crew that landed on the cylinder in the first book, were not space explorers (in the strictest sense), they were merely the nearest ship at that time that stood any chance of interception. I’ve been looking forward to the possibility of a move of the Rama series since my early teens. It’s the one set of books I can’t bring myself to finish 😅. I keep getting to within the last few chapters of Rama Revealed, stop, wait a while then start again from Rendezvous.

Warner Bros will be keeping pretty close tabs on any of their properties for the foreseeable future, considering how badly they have bungled the DCEU. If the quality of the first Dune film is upheld, I have no doubt that a third would be on the horizon, however far that might be. I'd be interested to see what Mr. Villeneuve can conjure up for Cleopatra!

The original Rama book was one of my all-time favorites. There were three sequel novels written by Gentry Lee and edited by Clarke but they got worse and worse through the series until I could barely stand the final book as I hated the main character. I'd love to see the original book put to the screen by Villeneuve but I'd never watch any movie based on the subsequent novels.

Rendezvous with Rama is only the prequel to the trilogy afterwards. If Rendezvous does go ahead they can stop at the end of the novel. However the real story starts with Rama II and follows the same characters with Garden of Rama and Rama Revealed. I'm a bit wary of them becoming movies.

Adapting A.C. Clarke, in movie history, would link Villeneuve (even) to Stanley Kubrick. Well, an eventual comparison with "2001 - A Space Odyssey", to Villeneuve, might be another huge task to shoulder - consider Christopher Nolan´s ridiculously failed ending of "Interstellar", failed to achieve something even remotely comparable to Kubrick´s thwarted endgame in "2001". Coming back to "2001": Kubrick just adapted a short story, not a novel; and in 1968, Kubrick could enjoy so much more creative freedom to achieve his very own results. Unfortunately, it may be overlooked for too long in the English speaking world that there were three incredibly groundbreaking, visionary movie adaptations of novels by the brothers Strugatsky in the Soviet Union/Post Soviet Russia: 1. Andrej Tarkovsky´s "Stalker" (1979), 2. Alexander Sokurov´s "Days of Eclipse" (1988), 3. Aleksei German´s "Hard to be God" (2013). In my opinion, Villeneuve cited some scenes of Konstantin Lopushansky´s Glasnost masterpiece "Dead Man´s Letters" (1986) in "Blade Runner 2049", so, probably, our favorite Canadian movie maker might be familiar with all of these three best Strugatsky adaptations as well. To push the dumb comparison with Kubrick away could mean, that Villeneuve might be doing something comparable to the Soviet/Russian trio, then, with "Rama" on his own terms. Would he be capable or even in favor of moving creatively that far out of today´s commercial blockbuster boundaries? (By the way, I missed this otherworldly vision in "Dune Part 1"; David Lynch, in return, had it, at least in certain parts of his adaptation. Villeneuve´s take was the sheer opposite, it was just "Inhaltism", as we say in German, desaturated colors and the actors had to downplay everything, as if the 180-turn to Lynch´s version had been the overall command.) May I add a long term wish here? I love the Culture universe by Iain M. Banks so much. Until today, no one in the "Western" world ever risked a movie adaptation. Could this be a project for our dear Denis?
