The scraping is so much more effective and delicate than opaque white gouache!

I love how Hilkurtz painted the shadow on the main building in red first then grey. It really gives the impression of red light being reflected onto the building.

Excellent tutorial. No doubt Hillkurtz it is one of the best contemporary watercolor painters, besides his amazing skill to draw and paint, more importanly it is how humble and real he is. He is using normal waterproof ink. It looks worn because he is sketching lightly with no pressure on the paper.
